Description
J1me 1949- c. w. ROSENBARGER CIGARETTE CASE WITH CLIP FASTENER Filed Dec. 10, 1947 INVENTOR.
BY My v-Ml- Fig. 3 Y [2 fwmmlm;
Clifford M. Rosenbarger Patented June 7, 1949 UNITED STATES ENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in cigarette cases, and the principal objects of the invention is to provide a case of the character herein described, such as may be conveniently and easily carried in the pocket, or the like, of a users garment, without the danger of the case falling from the pocket or otherwise becoming lost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cigarette case which includes a receptacle and an openable cover, together with means for releasably retaining the cover in a closed position, matters being so arranged that said means also function in retaining the entire case in the pocket of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette case which is simple in construction, pleasing in appearance, and which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention in situ in a pocket of the user;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the invention per se, and
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in a plane of the line 33 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a cigarette case designated generally by the reference character Hi, the same embodying in its construction a suitable receptacle H provided with a hinged cover I2, the receptacle bein provided adjacent the upper edge thereof with a protuberance or detent l3, the purpose of which will be presently described.
A resilient retaining clip I4 is of a more-or-less conventional nature, terminating at one end in a ball shaped or alternatively, a cylindrical portion I5, while the remaining end portion of the clip is angulated as at It and secured rigidly to the cover l2 by means of suitable rivets, or the like, 11.
The midportion of the clip I4 is formed with a recess or notch I 8, which is releasably engageable with the aforementioned detent l3 on the receptacle ll.
When the invention is placed in use, the entire case it! may be positioned in a, pocket ll! of the users garment 20, the clip I4, of course, being engaged with an edge portion of the pocket, so as 2 to prevent the case from accidentally or unintentionally dropping out of the pocket, as will be clearly understood.
However, at the same time as the clip I l performs this particular function, the engagement of the detent IS with the notch 18 of the clip l4 prevents the cover 12 from accidental or unintentional opening, so that the function of the clip i4 is twofold, namely, the retention of the cover H in a closed position, and secondly, retention of the entire cigarette case in the pocket of the user.
Needless to say, after the cigarette case is removed from the pocket, the cover I 2 may be easily and conveniently opened by simply lifting or urging the clip 14 outwardly in the direction of the arrow 2!, so as to disengage the notch In from the detent I 3.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a cigarette case, the combination of a receptacle having an openable top, a horizontal rib provided on the outer surface of said receptacle adjacent the top edge thereof, and a resilient clip having a horizontally angulated end portion rigidly secured to the upper surface of said top and extending therefrom downwardly past said rib for coaction with the adjacent side of said receptacle to frictionally retain the case on a support, the downwardly extending portion of said clip being movable toward and away from the adjacent side of the receptacle and being formed with a recess to receive said rib whereby opening of said top may be prevented.
