Description

(No Model.)
H. Y. MILLER.
HEAD REST. No. 247,208. Patented Sept. 20,1881.
I WITNESSES: 'INVENTOR S sf/ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY Y. MILLER, OF UNION COUNTY, INDIANA.
HEAD-REST.
247,208, dated September 20, 1881,
Application filed April 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEYY. MILLER, of Union county, Indiana, my post-ofiice ad.- dress being College Oorner,0hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head- Rests, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to a device for attaching to apersons body, to support and rest the head. It will be found useful in railroad or carriage travel, and under various other circumstances.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my device.
J J are curved rods, united by the sleeve G and set-screws H, and furnished at their lower ends with straps K. The sleeve G rests across the shoulders, behind the neck. The branches J have shanks 1, fitting into the sleeve G, and held by the set-screws H.
The shanks I may be adjusted in or out of the sleeve, so as to adapt the width of the device to the wearers body, and the parts may be entirely separated at this point, so as to pack in small compass.
The branches J pass down the breast, and they may he padded to add to comfort in wear. They should be of stiffly-flexible material. The straps K, attached to the lower end of the branches J, pass round the back and fasten together. The straps K, instead of fastening together, may attach to buttons properly located upon the clothing.
It will be seen that the frame, as described, furnishes a sleeve at the back base of the neck of the wearer well supported against backward strains by the branches passing over the shoulders and breasts and held by body fastenings.
The sleeve G supports the standard D, which should be somewhat flexible. The standard is slotted. The clamp-block 0 slides vertically upon it, and may be fixed by the setscrew F.
The shanks I of the branehesJ,being round, furnish adjusting-pivots, by which the standard D may be fixed in any vertically angular position desired for comfort.
A is a soft head-pad, and B B are concave springs attached to it, and tending to strain the pad in an obvious manner. The springs B are held between the clamp-block U and standard D, and are adjustable therein, so that the pad may be swung around in an obvious manner. The back of the wearers head presses on the pad and presses it backward, drawing the springs B somewhat together, so as to hold the head gently but securely. Other devices may be used for securing the adjustability of the pad sidewise and verticall y upon the standard, and also for securing the rotary and widening adjustability at the points I. By properly fitting the device to the wearer all of the adjustments may be dispensed with, and the pad A may be simply a soft head-restattached to the standard.
As shown and described, the device is capable of adjustment for Width between framebranches; for vertical inclination of the standard, which thus alters the relative position of the head-pad; for vertical position of the pad above the shoulders; for angular side position of the pad; and for distance between ends of head-pad, the latter adjustment being automatic.
I claim as my inventionl. ln head rests, the combination of the branches J, body-straps K, head-pad A,'st-andard D, connected with the head-pad, sleeve G, connected with the standard and having setscrews H, and the shanks I upon the branches, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In head-rests, the combination of suitable supporting devices, the block 0, standard D, having slot E, the pair of flexible semicircular wires B, the head-pad A, of flexible material, permanently united to and uniting said wires, and the set-screw F, arranged to bind the slotted standard to the block 0, and to clamp the wires B between them, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HARVEY Y. MILLER.
