Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in thread cutters for weft replenishing looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide means by which the thread cutter adjacent to the shuttle eye may be adapted for use with a variety of forms of shuttle boxes.
On a Weft replenishing beat of a loom it is desirable to cut the thread of the outgoing bobbin so that it can be removed and not be drawn into the warp shed. On a type of loom which has gone into general use this cutting is effected by acutter mechanism of the scissor type including a blade fixed to the mechanism and another blade pivoted thereto. When operating these blades enter a slot in the front wall of the shuttle box and then pass into an opening in the front wall of the shuttle to cut the thread which leads back from the shuttle eye to the selvage. The cutter moves laterally during the cutting operation and any interference with its lateral movement will adversely effect the cutting operation. When a thread cutter of this type is applied to various types of looms it is found that considerable difficulty is experienced in adapting the cutter for correct entry into the slot of the front wall of the shuttle box to avoid the aforesaid interference. It is an important object of the present invention to provide means by which the normal position of the pivoted cutter blade can be adjusted so that it can enter the slot in the box front without engaging the latter and therefore be free to move laterally.
The means for operating the movable cutter blade includes a roll adapted for engagement with a surface on the front of the lay. This roll is ordinarily mounted on the lower part of the pivoted cutter blade and whenever the blade is adjusted to clear the shuttle box front the roll has a corresponding motion either from or toward the lay, depending upon whether the cutting jaw of the upper cutter blade is lowered or raised by its adjustment. This movement of the roll alters the time of its engagement with the lay and therefore of its operation. It is a further object of the invention to provide means by which the roll may be mounted on but moved relatively to the pivotedcutter blade to compensate for the movement of the blade effected by the first named adjustment, thereby maintaining the correct timing for the cutting operation.
In thread cutters of the type to which the invention more particularly relates there is a tendency for the thread cutting jaws to overlap each other to such an extent as to interfere with their free relative motion. It is another object ofthe invention to provide means which will prevent objectionable angular displacement of the pivoted cutter blade to the end that the latter may always be held in such positionthat its cuttin jaw can move freely with respect to the cutting jaw of the fixed blade. e
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the 'description proceeds, the invention resides in. the -combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth.

Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the loom frame [0 supports a reserve. bobbin magazine M including in its construction a transferrer arm I l pivoted as at l2. The magazine in the present instance is. provided. with front and back stacks l3 and M of reserve bobbinswhich move by gravity to transfer position. The magazine can rock so that the lowest bobbin in either. stack will be under the foot l5 ofthe transferrer arm at the time of replenishing operation. A transferrer latch l6 mounted on a latch holder [1 pivoted as. at l8 to the transferrer arm is normally in the down position shown in Fig. 1 to clear the transfer hunter [9 on the lay L.
Secured to stud i2 is a stand 25 receiving a stem 26 held in adjusted vertical position by an adjusting set screw 27. A lever 28 is pivoted to the bottom of stem 26 to swing in a horizontal plane and is acted upon by a spring 30 which normally tends to move the right hand arm 29 thereof as viewed in Fig. 2 rearwardly or toward the lay L. The left hand arm 3| of lever 28 is normally urgedflforwardly by spring 30 against a control stop 32 on the transferrer arm. At the time of a weft replenishing operation latch I6 is raised and thenmoved forwardly by bunter l9 and the stop 32 due to its forward movement permits left hand or counter-clockwise rocking 0i lever 28 as viewed in Fig. 2 under theaction spring 52 between ,arn ilj the right as viewed in F1 of spring 30, thereby eifecting rearward movement of arm 29.
Lever 28 has a hub 34 which receives a rod 35 the rear end of which is secured in a laterally ofiset lug 36 of a support 31, see Fig. 2. This movement, however, is very small and the sleeve will engage the stud head to prevent any substantial angular twist of the blade 39 and the jaw 44 relatively to the jaw 43. These two jaws are therefore held in correct position for free relative movement.
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple means have been provided by which the normal position of pivoted cutter blade 39 may be adjusted with respect to the cuttin mechanism to adapt it for use with various kinds of shuttle box front walls. It will also be seen that when an adjustment is made to adapt the cutter for a particular box front the adjusting screw 62 can be altered to compensate for any horizontal movement of roll 5| incident to angular adjustment of blade 39. It will be seen that the adjustment for arm 4| does not interfere with the normal movement of arm 42 in limiting downward movement of jaw 44. The carrier 60 is supported at the rear end of adjusting screw 62 and is prevented from havin angular movement relatively to the screw by entry of the lower part of blade 39 into the slot 6|. Furthermore, it will be noted that the sleeve 12 cooperates with the head 15 of the stud to prevent any substantial angular movement of the pivoted blade 39 with respect to the fixed blade 38.
Having thus described the invention it will be seen that changes and modifications of the foregoing specific disclosure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A weft thread cutting unit for a loom, said unit comprising a support formed with a lateral lug and having a cutter blade fixed thereto, a second cutter blade pivotally mounted on said support and having upper and lower arms on opposite sides of said lug, an adjustable stop screw on said support to engage said upper arm to vary the position of said second blade relatively to the fixed blade when said upper arm engages the stop screw, operating roll means for the second blade, and an adjusting screw supported by the lower arm and operatively connected to and supporting said r011 means and rotatable relatively to said second blade to vary the position of the roll means relatively to said second blade.
2. A weft thread cutting unit for a loom, said unit comprising a support formed with a lateral lug and having a cutter blade fixed thereto, a second cutter blade pivotally mounted on said support and having upper and lower arms on opposite sides of said lug, and an adjustable stop screw for the upper arm on said support to vary the position of said second blade relatively to the fixed blade when said upper arm engages the stop screw.
3. In weft thread cutting mechanism for a loom having a lay provided with a shuttle box front wall formed with an opening, a support mounted for forward movement by the lay and in a direction lengthwise of said front wall, said support having a lateral lu and having fixed thereto a cutter blade formed with a rearwardly extending cutting jaw to enter said opening, a second cutter blade, a pivotal mounting on said support for said second blade, a second rearwardly extending cutting jaw on said second blade to enter said opening for cooperation with the jaw of the fixed blade and having also upper and lower forwardly extending spaced arms, one above and the other below said lug, a vertical adjusting screw in said support for engagement with one of said arms to determine the upper limit of movement of said second jaw to prevent the latter from engagin said front wall at the top of said opening, lay engaging roll means for the second blade below said pivotal mounting, and a horizontal adjusting screw supported on said lower arm and extending into supporting relation with said roll means and effective when turned to change the back and forth position of the roll means relatively to the lay.
4. A cutter blade for the fillin thread cutting mechanism of a loom havin a lay, said blade comprising a flat metallic body formed with a thread cutting jaw and a substantially straight edge on the periphery of the body below said jaw, an adjusting screw, a lug fixed to the blade in which the screw is threaded, a lay engaging roll, and a carrier on which the roll i rotatably mounted operatively connected to and supported by said screw and formed to cooperate with said straight edge to move therealong as the screw is turned in said lug.
5. A cutter blade for the filling thread cutting mechanism of a loom having a lay, said blade comprising a flat metallic body formed with a thread cutting jaw and a substantially straight edge on the periphery of the body under said jaw, a carrier having a groove therein receiving said straight edge, a lay engaging roll rotatable on said carrier, and an adjusting screw supported by and rotatable relatively to the blade and operatively connected to said carrier and effective when turned relatively to the blade to move said carrier along said straight edge.
