PAYNE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T'O CROMPTON & KNOWLES LOOM WORKS, F VTORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION MASSACHUSETTS MOUNTING FOR WEFT PARTERS Application filed March 16, 1931.
This invention relates to improvements in thread cutters for weft replenishing looms and it is the general object of the invention to provide an improved form of support which will permit ready adjustment of the cutter with respect to the loom shuttle.
Multicolor weft replenishing mechanisms ordinarily comprise in their construction inner and outer plates between which the bobbins extends, and these plates are held in position by tie rods which are substantially parallel to the lay. It is an important object of my present invention to provide a support for a thread cutting element mov- 5 able along these tie rods but capable of being held in fixed relation with respect to them in any one of a plurality of positions.
It is a further object of my present invention to provide a bracket or the like which 0 may be applied to existing multicolor weft 35 set forth,
Fig. 1 is a front view of a portion of a loom with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a view looking in the direction of arrows 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a view of a portion of the structure shown in Fig. 1 on'an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawing, I have shown a magazine M of the multicolor type and inner and outer plates 10 and 11, respectively, which are held in spaced relation by tie rods two of which are shown herein at 12 and 13, respectively. The magazine is supported by a stand 14 mounted on the loom frame 15.
A transferrer arm 16 is pivoted about a fixed stud 17 carried by the magazine and Serial No. 522,819.
movable downwardly from its normally raised position to effect transfer. An arm 18 extends downwardly from the transferrer for a purpose to be described.
The shuttle S is provided with a metallic plate which is adjacent the shuttle delivery eye 31 and located to extend above and below a horizontal line extending through the delivery eye.
The parter lever 35 is provided with a cutting blade 36 pivoted thereto and having a rear sharpened edge 37 to engage the plate 30 on the shuttle. The lever 35 also has an arm 38 which lies behind the transferrer carried arm 18. A compression spring 39 acts on the lever in such a way as to tend normally to move the cutter blade 36 rearwardly or toward the shuttle.
The matter thus far described forms no part of my present invention, the magazine being substantially as set forthin prior Patent No. 1,303,748. I i
In carrying my present invention into effect I provide a supporting bracket 40 having upper and lower split bearings 41 and 42, respectively, which may coact with caps 43 held in place by screws 44 tapped into the bracket. These split bearings are fitted around the upper and lower tie rods, respectively, and serve to hold the bracket in fixed position, but capable of longitudinal adjustment along the rods in a direction parallel to the shuttle and the lay L.
The lower end of the bracket is formed with a vertical hub 45 in which is adjustably secured; for vertical movement a-stud 46. The lower end of the latter is formed with the head47 on which'the lever 35 rests and .a collar 48 adjustably secured by setscrew 49 is mounted for angular adjustment around the stud and is also provided with a pin 50 to engage one end of the spring 39; The collar prevents upward displacement of the lever 35. By adjusting the position of the collar 48 it is possible to vary the pressure exerted by the spring. By the matter thus far described it is possible to adjust the axis of the lever in a direction parallel to the lay and also to raise or lower the lever with respect to the shuttle by means of the set screw 51 which holds the stud in position.
The lay L is provided with a shuttle box back which defines a portion of the shuttle box that receives the shuttle. The front part of the box is defined by a binder 61 which is formed substantially as shown in Fig. 1 and swings about a pivot 62 fixed with respect to the lay. The binder has an opening or slot '63 adjacentits pivot toafford means for the cutter 36 to reach the plate 30.
In operation, when sufficient weft for continued weaving is present in the shuttle the lay will move forwardly on each beat of the loom, but the cutter blade 36 will be held forwardly with respect to the shuttle so as not to engage the plate 30, this result being brought about by the fact that finger 18 of the transferrer arm engages arm 38 of the lever 35. During the forward movement of the lay the cutter will move through slot 63 of the binder. When a transfer occurs the arm 18 will move forwardly and spring 39 will move the cutter 36 rearwardly. During forward movement of the lay the plate 30 of the shuttle will engage the cutting edge 37 and sever the thread which at this time extends from the delivery eye back along the shuttle binder toward the adjacent selvage. The shuttle S may be provided with a groove in which the weft may be located. A thread clamp not shown but of any convenient form may be located between the shuttle It and the adjacent selvag e to hold the weft which is severed at the plate 30'and prevent the same from being drawn into the shed on the next pick of the loom.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provideda convenient and simple form of support for the weft cutter blade 36 comprising structure which is movable along the tie rod of'the magazine to effect longitudinal adjustment of the cutting edge 37 with respect to the plate on the shuttle. By means of this mode of support I may place the cutter edge 37 correctly with respect to the-plate 30 of the boxed shuttle. The caps 43 are on opposite sides of the tie rods to relieve them of the strains to which the cutter is subject.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen'that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I-claim is:
