PLATFORM-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,164, dated September 20, 1881. Application filed December 14, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHEPARD W. CATELY, of the village of Cortland, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Elastic Oscillating Gears for Platform-Spring Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- My invention relates to a gear for platformsprin'g wagons; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In vehicles of this kind, where the ordinary 'A-gear has been used, a serious imperfection has existed heretofore, causingexcessive strain and breakage of the parts often, by the lateral torsion or shock imparted by the vehicle passing over uneven ground, and especially when the wheels upon one side suddenly drop lower than those upon the other.
Various efforts have been made to correct this imperfection, and among others the oscillating gear has been devised, mounted upon a pivot, giving the carriage-body a lateral motion; but in this last-mentioned gear it was found that the body careened too easily, and that the gear lacked the ability of readily restoring the body to its normal position.
My invention is designed to obviate these difficulties, and renders the motion of the can riage easy and furnishes an elasticity to the gear which tends to restore the body of the vehicle to its proper level after lateral torsion.
In carrying out my invention I employ the mechanisms represented in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a top-plan view of my improved gear mounted upon the ordinary platformsprings. Fig. 2 is a bottom-plan view with the springs and axle removed; and Fig. 3 is a central transverse section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the center bar, which afi'ords the pivotal point for the kin g-bolt; B, the front cross-piece, curved as shown; G,the blocks over back cross-sprin g, and D the circle or wheel mounted upon center bar, A.
E E represent two springs, one upon either side of, and both running parallel with, the center bar, A, and extending from cross-piece B to spring-block O. The circle D, at opposite points, rests upon and is rigidly secured to the springs E E at or near their central portions.
To the front cross-bar, B, at its ends, are attached by suitable clamps the front ends of each side spring.
The cross -piece is provided with an iron plate, F,bolted underneath, and also connected to the front end of the center bar, A.
G G represent iron T-plates bolted, respectively, upon the top of the cross-piece B and spring-block 0, connecting each with the center bar, A. The ends of the springs E E rest upon the plates G G and are bolted thereto.
While not strictly essential in the use of my improvement, I prefer to make the bolt-holes in the ends of springs E E slightly oblong. A brace, H, (shown in detail in Fig. 2,) connects the springs E E underneath with ea h other and also with center bar, A, being so located as to receive the king-bolt through center bar, and is also secured to springs E E by the same bolt which secures them to circle D. The center bar, A, springs by torsion, and its motion is controlled and regulated by the springs E E.
What I claim as new is- 1. In aplatform-spring wagon, the springs E E and intermediate reach-bar, adapted to serve relatively to a fifth-wheel and connections as and for the purposes set forth.
2. An elastic oscillating gear for springwago'ns consisting of the center bar, A,.crosspiece B, spring-block U, springs E E, and fifthwheel, as and for the purposes :et forth.
3. Tire combination of the center bar, A, cross-piece B, spring-block U, circle 1), parallel springs E E, and brace H, all arranged to operate as and for the purposes specified.
