This invention relates to a new and improved which is of simple and inexpensive design and a machine which is easily and accurately operated.
Further improvements and advantages of this invention will readily appear to those skilled in the art when the following description is read in the light of the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals indicate similar parts throughout the drawings, A designates a fractional horsepower motor mounted on a rectangular base member I which is the base board of the entire machine. Reduction gears 2 reduce the motor shaft speed so that crank wheel 3 is driven at 60 R. P. M.
Secured as at 4 in an eccentric position on crank wheel 3 is an elongated arm 5 to the outer extremity of which is secured a transverse member 6 which supports horizontally from each of its ends a spring clip 1 which is adapted to suspend a fowl, by its hock joints, head down, from the end of the arm 5.
When the machine is positioned relative to a scald tank 8 so as to perform the immersion of poultry, the arm 5 is given an elliptical up and down motion by the rotation of the crank wheel 3 causing the poultry held by the clips 7 to be given a four directional movement in the scald tank through actuation of arm 5. This multi-directional movement causes quicker and more thorough penetration of the feathers by the water than would a straight reciprocal immersion.
The timing of the immersion of the poultry is controlled by a timing gear 9 which is driven by 2 a worm .Ill which in turn is driven by a flexible coupling H to the gearbox l2 of the motor I.
The timing gear 9 is mounted on a sliding shaft f3 which is held in a gear meshing positionby a spring I4. A lever 15 is mounted on t e shaft 13 toallow theoperator to disengagethe gear 9- from the worm I0 and allow for a timing check of the rotation of the timing gear.
In operation the machine must be tilted to a position as shown at B so that the base I rests against the spring support l6 secured to the upright I! which is hinged as at l8 to the base I and adapted to stand vertically adjacent th tank wall. A suitable spring-actuated, lifting device 26 is employed to retain the base in this tilted position. This device normally urges the base I, by means of the connectin linkage, toward a downward or tilted position.
When this machine is in this tilted position it will hold the hock clips well above the tank level so that birds may be secured in them.
Then push down on handle [9 until the latch 20 engages the catch 2| thus causing the sliding bar 22, to which the pivoted bar 20 is secured, to move transverse the base I thus releasing the plunger 23 to open switch 24 which starts the motor.
The arm 5 which was immersed in the tank by the downward change in position of handle I9 is then caused to reciprocally oscillate in the tank scalding the fowl.
The shaft l3 rotates until lever l5, which rotates with the shaft, is brought to bear against the buffer 25 at one end of the sliding bar 22 and moves it back to its original position closing switch 24 and stopping the motor, and simultaneously releasing bar 20 from the catch 2| causing the base I to be returned to its tilted position by the spring operated lifter 26.
The timing of the rotation of the shaft l3 by the timing gear 9 causes the release of bar 20 from catch 2| by the lever 15 after a predetermined length of time taken by lever l5 to move to its releasing position against buffer 25.
This length of rotation time is set before operation by use of graduations on the timing gear.
Having thus described this invention what I claim is:
1. In a poultry immerser, an upright, a tank adapted to contain a scalding liquid arranged on one side of said upright, a table arranged above said tank and mounted for tilting movement about a horizontal axis into and out of horizontal position with respect to said tank, carrying means for suspendingly supporting a fowl mounted for eccentric movement and arranged at an angle with respect to said table and carried by the latter, power means on said table, means operatively connected to said upright and said table for effecting the tilting movement of the latter, automatic means for initiating the actuation of said power means, timing means operatively connected to said power means for automatically stopping the latter after a predetermined duration, and means operatively connecting said power means to said carrying means for effecting eccentric movement of the latter means, whereby when the table has been moved to a horizontal position the fowl carried by the carrying means is caused to be agitated within the liquid in said tank.
2. In a poultry immerser, an upright, a tank adapted to contain a scalding liquid arranged on one side of said upright, a table arranged above said tank and mounted for tilting movement about a horizontal aXis into and out of horizontal position with respect to said tank, carrying means for suspendingly supporting a fowl mounted for eccentric movement and arranged at an angle with respect to said table and carried by the latter, power means on said table, means operatively connected to said upright and said table for effecting the tilting movement of the latter, automatic means for initiating the actuation of said power means, timing means operatively connected to said power means for automatically stopping the latter after a predetermined duration, means operatively connecting said power means to said carrying means for efiecting eccentric movement of the latter means, whereby when the table has been moved to a horizontal position the fowl carried by the carrying means is caused to be agitated within the liquid in said tank and means operatively connected to said upright and said table for maintaining the latter when moved to its horizontal position.
