Abstract

1,215,347. Viscometer. FALLING NUMBER A.B. Dec.2, 1968, No.57079/68. Heading G1S. A tank 2 contains liquid heated to 100‹ C. and is provided with a level regulator 20, a vapour cooler 21, and a viscometer tube 3 immersed in the bath and containing a stirrer viscometer 4 which is reciprocated vertically by a motor rotated grooved drum 7 engaging a projection 8a. The tube 3 is secured in position by a slide 9, and a latch 18 operated by a release magnet 15 retains the head 4b of the stirrer inter-connected with the lifting arm 8. In operation the tube 3 is filled with sample material, e.g. flour, and the stirrer 4 reciprocated vertically for 60 seconds, the stirring is then discontinued when the stirrer is at the top. The latch 18 is now released so that the stirrer 4, now serving as a gravity body, falls freely a predetermined distance in the tube 3 until a pulse emitter 19 strikes and closes a contact 17. This contact stops a counting mechanism 13, and the period of time on the counter is used to indicate the viscosity. In Figs. 3-5 (not shown) a driven gear wheel (8) has a crank-pin (22) which engages in a notch (23a) in a T-shaped member (23) supporting and reciprocating the stirrer (not shown) by means of jaws (50). The jaws are opened to release the stirrer for its gravity fall when a tongue (54) is lowered into the path of a cam (61) to operate a switch (55) and automatically stop the driving motor, a rod (59) at this time engaging an abutment (60) and being moved down to depress an element (58) and release the jaws.
