Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS YV. BACON, OF 'EST NEVTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO ASHCROFT, OF BOSTON` MASSACHUSETTS.
ED VA RD Il.
GAGE-COCK FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24.692, dated July 5, 1859.
To all 'whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, Finnois lV. Bacon, of Test Newton, in the county of h/[iddlesex and State of hflassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Gage-Cocks for Steai'n-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the aecompai'iyiug ('lrawings, of which- Figure l, is a side elevation, and Fig. a longitudinal and vertical section of a gage cock furnished with my intention. Fig. 3, is a transverse section taken through the throat and the clearer, thereof, while Fig. 4, is a side View of the screw plug and the clearer as removed from the throat and the body of the cock or faucet.
The nat-ure of my invention consists in the application of a throat clearer to the screw plug of a gage cock and so as to eX- tend into the throat of the cock and be capable of being rotated therein with and by the screw plugthe object of the clearer being to prevent the throat from becoming clogged by foreign matter or mineral deposits.
The common gage cocks. or try cocks of steam boilers are very liable to become so clogged in their throats, and when such is the case, a considerable expenditure of time and labor is frequently required for removal of the obstructing matter.
ln the drawings, A, denotes the body of the gage cock. while B is the screw plug which operates within the body and with reference to a Valve seat a, either against which or away from which it may be moved by a screw, applied to a` hand wheel, c, and screwed into the body. The throat or induction passage, c. of the said body is cylindrical and receives within it a thin metallic bar or clearer, C, whose width c0rresponds to or nearly to, the diameter of the said passage, such bar being made to eX- tend from the center of the screw plug. This bar rotates with the screw plug and serves to prevent calcareous deposits or foreign matter from becoming incrusted on the inner surface of the passage, any of which lodging therein being discharged by the steamer the water on the gage cock beinel opened.
I claimh The combination of the throat clearer C. with the throat and t-he screw plug of the gage cock and so as to operate therewith substantially as specied.
ln testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my signature.
FRANCI S lV. BACON.
