Description
GREY W. VVISWELL, OF PILOT KNOB, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 86,617, lated Febrlm/r'y 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-VALVES FOR STEAM-GENERATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sama.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GREY IV. \VISWELL, oi' Iilot Knob, in the county of Iron, and State of Missouri, have irl-ade certain new and useful Improvements in Gauge and Stop-Gocksibr Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the iollowingds a full and clear description thereof, reference being had io the4 accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
lt is well known that in practice the ordinary gaugecoek, as used to detrnniine the height of wat-er or steam in steam-boilers, is liable to leak or jam, or ctherwise to be seriously damaged, thus becoming non-utile; and as these things frequently and generally occur while the boiler is in use, it is plain that it becomes a matter ot' great importance to so arrange the gauge-cock that it may be readily repaired or replaced Without throwing the boiler out of operation.
.'lo accomplish this, I have arranged the said gauge-4 coel: with a stop-cock, and thus I am enabled to shut oi the steam from the gauge-cock, and remove it for repairs, or replace it, and then, by turning on steam tl'n-ough the stop-cock, the parts are again in Workingnrder.
lo enable those skilled herein `to make and use my said invention, l will now more fully describe' the con- `struction and operation thereof, reierriug to- Figure l, as au elevation; to
Figure 2, as a vertical transverse section.
l construct the stop-cock A in any of the ordinary forms, and arranging on the rear end the screw-threads u, by' means whereof the cock is secured to the skin of the boiler.
In the form ofgauge-coek and stop-cock shown in the drawings, l have used the ordinary conical plug A', arranged with central aperture a', which, when in the direction ol' the longitudinal axis of the parts, opens communication between the boiler and gauge-Cock, and when, by the handle B, the plug A is turned` (in an angle of ninety degrees) the said communication is eut uit.
The stop-cook A has the chamber O, atthe end whereof' I have arranged the screw-tin'eads c, to receive the gauge-cock D and to connect the parts A and D.
The gauge-cock D consists of the housing D and valve E, thevalve having the seat e at the rear end of D.
In the housing D is the vertical hole (Z for the discharge of water or steam'.
The valve-stem c' is cut, by either diminishing its diameter, or by making it of triangular section, so that when the valve E is forced back from its seat the steam may pass within the housing D and out ofthe hole d.
The valve E has the knob e2, as usual.
The operation of said gauge is as follows:
The pressure of steam in the boiler holds the valve 'E against its seat, e. If now the operator forces'said valve back from its seat, their steam or Water will enter the housing D and issue at (l, indicating the water or steam-level, as usually required.
It', then, the cock D becomes leaky or is jammed, or is otherwise disabled, I close the stop-cock A, by turning the handle B, as aforesaid, and then unscrew or disconnect the gauge-cook D. rIhen the gauge-cock may be repaired orreplaeed;- and when this has been done, the stop-cock A being opened, the parts are again operative.
Having thus fully described my invention,
1. The combination of the stop-cock A and gaugecock D, substantially as set forth.
2. The arrangement of the stop-cock A, chamber' C, and valve E, of the gauge-cock I), substantially as set forth. Y
GREY XV. VISVVELL. Witnesses:
