CONVERTIBLE BLOW-OFF COCK AND CHECK-VALVE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALrH V. Finsnixn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful vimprovements in Convertible BlovvOtt Cocks and (heck-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to valves, and particularly to the form of valve shown in my Patent, No. 968,037, of August 23, 1910. In my prior patent I showed a valve particularly adapted as a blow-off cock wherein the 'ipenmg leading to the boiler might be closed while the main valve was being repaired or replaced.
In blow-ofi' cocks as ordinarily made, when it is desired to replace or repair the main valve, it is necessary to allow the steam and water to be drawn oil from the boiler as otherwise the steam or water would be blown out of the blow-oft cock while the valve was out of its place. My present invention is designed to obviate this inconvenience, as was my prior invention, and in accordance with this the invention contemplates providing a main valve stem which is movable in one direction to close or open the main valve, and an auxiliary valve independently movable whenever desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve which may be used either as a blow-oft cock of the character above described, or as a check valve, or in a number of other relations which were impos sible with the construction described in my prior patent.
To this end, the invention includes the provision of a valve casing having a main valve movable in one direction, an auxiliary valve independently movable in another direction, each of these valves being niovable independently of the other, and the auxiliary valve being so arranged that. if desired, it be made so as to be freely movable within certain limits by pressure from the exterior of the valve.
A further object is to improve the constructions of this type by providing improved packing means or glands for the valve stems, and also providing means whereby the valve casing may be connected either to a boiler, as wiere the valve is being used as a boiler cock, or boiler check valve, or whereby it may be connected to a pipe connection.
lHy invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a valve constructed in accordance with my invention, the main valve stem being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on the same line as Fig. 1 but showing the valve 17 arranged as a check valve.

Referring to these drawings, 2 designates a valve casing of any suitable character but shown as provided with a body 3 from which projects at right angles the nipple 4*. This nipple 4 is interiorly screw threaded as at 5 and exteriorly screw threaded as at (3.
The interior screw threads 5 permit the valve to be used with blow-oil cock connections, and the threads at (3 permit the valve to be used for a boiler check connection. Screwing into the bottom of the valve body 3 and extending at right angles to the nip ple l is a valve seat designated '7, this seat being approximately cylindrical in form and being shouldered at 8, the reduced portion of the upper end of the valve seat being screw threaded as at 9 for engagement with the screw threaded wall 10 of the opening formed in the lower end of the valve body. The inner face of the lower end of the s at 7 is interiorly screw threaded as at 11, and the lower end of the seat exteriorly screw threaded as at 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter stated.
Into the side of the valve body opposite the nipple 4 is screwed a hub 13 having screw threaded engagement with the auxiliary valve stem.
Passing through a packing gland formed at the upper end of the valve body is a main valve stem designated 15. This valve stem is formed at its lower end with an annular shoulder 16. The valve 17 is annular in form and beveled on its under face so as to engage against the beveled seating face 18 of the valve seat 7. The center of the valve is countersunk as at 19, this countersunk portion having a diameter equal to the exterior diameter of the shoulder 16 so as to permit the shoulder to fit and move within the countersink 19.
The valve is formed at its middle portion with an upwardly projecting hub 20, exteriorly screw threaded for engagement with an annular cap or collar 21 whose horizontal flange extends over the shoulder 16 formed on the main valve stem. It will thus be seen that the main valve stem as far as described has a limited sliding engagement with the valve 17. Under certain circumstances which will be hereafter detailed, a filling member is placed within the countersink or recess 19 filling or partially filling the same against which the lower end of the main valve stem rests. If the filling member entirely fills the countersink 19, the valve will be held in rigid engagement with the main valve stem and will move vertically in either direction upon a movement of the main valve stem. If, however, the filling member only partially fills the countersink, then the main valve will have a sliding movement with regard to the valve stem, and if the filling is entirely absent, the valve 17 will of course have a greater movement. Thus where the filling is entirely removed, the main valve stem will be left loose in the main valve and the main valve will be raised by the pressure of the injector or pump connected to the valve casing through the member 7. In short, where the filling is entirely removed or relatively small filling is used, the valve 17 forms a check valve which will be raised from its seat by pressure from the exterior of the valve casing, and closed when the pressure has been reduced.
The upper end of the valve casing 2 is formed with a relatively large hub 23 screw threaded on its interior for engagement with a packing nut 21 whose outwardly flared lower end bears against a packing 25, thus constituting a gland through which the main valve stem passes. The upper end of the packing nut is provided with a set screw 26 for engaging the main valve and holding the main valve tightly to its seat when desired, or for holding it in any desired adjusted position.
The inner end of the nipple 1 is formed with a valve seat 27 against which a valve 28 bears. This is the auxiliary valve. Both the valve 28 and the valve 17 are formed with wings 29 which are tapered toward their extremities so as to have a sliding engagement with the walls of the valve seat and guide the valve to its proper seating position.
The valve 28 is preferably formed integral with a slotted shank designated 30, through the slot of which the main valve stem 15 passes. It will thus be seen that the main valve stem has vertical movement entirely independent of the auxiliary valve, while the auxiliary valve has lateral movement at right angles to the main valve stem entirely independent thereof.
The inner end of the shank 30 is formed with a head 31 having a longitudinal slot 32 in each side wall for engagement with a head 33 of a valve stem :01 which is screw threaded as at 35 for engagement with the interiorly screw threaded walls of the hub El. A packing gland 36 has screw threaded engagement with the hub 1 and through this packing gland the stem 34 passes. The stem 34- is provided at its ends with means whereby it may be attached either to a hand wheel. wrench or other means whereby the valve stem may be rotated. It will be seen that the valve stem 3t has a swiveled engagement with the shank 30 and that thus the valve stem may be rotated without rotating the valve. The same comment applies to the connection of the valve 17 with the main valve stem. The lower end of the hub 7 is cut away as at 37 to form a ball joint for pipe connections.
The use of my invention is as follows: l nder ordinary circumstances where the device is used as a blow-off cock. the main valve 17 is operated in the usual manner, the valve 28 being of course open. hen it is desired to repair the main valve 17 or regrind the same or its valve seat, it is only necessary to rotate the valve stem 3t which will cause the valve 28 to seat against the beveled portion 27 and close the inlet opening through the nipple. 4. 3y now remov ing the annular member 7. the valve 17 may be readily detached from the stem 15 and removed for regrinding or repairing, at. the same time the seat 18 on the men'iber 7 may be reground. During all this time, the valve 28 is held to its seat and prevents any inlet of steam. After the valve 17 is replaced in its normal condition, the stem is rotated to lift the valve 28 away from its seat. It will be seen that with this use of my invention a Very convenient blow-off cock is provided which I have found in practice to be entirely effective and to entirely obviate the inconvenience incident to the ordinary blow-off cock valve, ny improved valve eliminating the necessity of drawing the fires or blowing off the steam and water prior to removing the valve.
lVhere my device is used as a blowotf cock. the space between the bottom of the countersink 19 and the adjacent extremity of the main valve 17 is filled by the filling member 22 so that the valve and valve stem move together. lVhen. however. it is desired to use the valve 17 as a check valve, this filling is removed. Under these circumstances, any back pressure will cause the valve 17 to lift in the manner of any ordinary check valve, the valve being guided by its engagement with the valve stem. The amount of this lift within certain limits may be very accurately adjusted by adjusting the main valve stem 15 in the packing nut 24. A certain amount of adjustment may also be secured by adjusting the nut 21.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A compound valve of the character described comprising a valve body having valve seats in angular relation to each other, a valve stem extending into the body and carrying a valve engaging one of said seats, a valve stem extending into said body and axially intersecting the other valve stem and being formed with a head, said valve stems being independently movable, a valve coacting with the last named valve stem and having a central recess to receive said head, and a collar slidably mounted upon the second named valve stem and loosely engaging over the head and having a marginal, depending, screw threaded flange, the said valve having an upwardly extending screw threaded annular flange to engage the collar and being adjustable thereon.
2. A compound valve of the character described comprising a valve body having valve seats in angular relation to each other, a valve coacting with one of said seats and having a shank formed with laterally disposed inturned flanges, a valve stem having screw threaded engagement with the valve body and passing thereinto and formed with a head engaging said flanges, the said shank being formed with a longitudinal slot, a valve coacting with the other valve seat, a
stem passing through the valve body, through the slot of the said shank and coacting with the last named valve, means engaging said stem with said last named valve and permitting the valve to have limited longitudinal movement on the stem, and detachable means disposed between the stem and the valve for preventing such longitudinal movement.
3. A valve of the character described including a valve body formed with a nipple projecting from one side and an interiorly screw threaded opening disposed in a plane at right angles to the nipple, a detachable valve seat having screw threaded engagement with the valve body in said opening, a detachable hub having screw threaded engagement with the valve body and opposed to the nipple, a valve engaging with the valve seat on the nipple, a stem passing through the hub and having screw threaded engagement therewith and swiveled upon the first named valve, a valve coacting with the detachable valve seat and less in diameter than the opening within which the valve seat is mounted, a valve stem passing through and intersecting the valve stem of the first named valve, and means for detachably engaging the second named valve stem with the second named valve.
