APPAREL HANGER CABINET Filed Sept. 29, 1945 2 Sheets-$heet 2 v 3 I -Hi ni Patented May 3, 1949 UNITED S TATES PATENT FF I CE APPAREL-HANGER CABINET Michael Ascherl, Lorain, Ohio "Application September 29, 1945, Serial No. 619,287
.5 Claims. '1
exemplification of my invention pertains to an apparel-hanger-cabinet ormore specifically to a. dust-tight cabinet provided with a dooror doors and a hanger or hangers for suspending neckties a door and ahanger, :besidesbeing each movably attached to "the cabinet-being themselves interconnected; as by a link articulated with each, whereby to move in unison in response to manipulation of an actuating structure.
The objects of .my origination, in addition to those evidenced by the foregoing paragrapl'i, are the attainment of "compactness, facility and reliability" of operation of either anopen-ing or of a closing manual actuation, due economy of manufacture, as prescribed respectively by the utilitarian purpose of a domestic appliance and by the hope for itsmarketed introduction.
' Advert-lug to the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of anecktie cabinet embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation with :a front mirror removed and a pair of lateral doors in open position.
Figure 3 is a horizontal view, taken substantially on line 3-3 ofFlgure-'2, looking downward.
Figure 4 is aview substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking downward.
Figure 5 is a horizontal view, taken substantially on line 5"5 ofFigure "2, looking downward.
Figure 6 is a view corresponding to Figure v5, but with pertain parts shifted to alternative positions.
Figure 7:.is an enlarged perspective view of a roller carriage comprising necktie hangers.
Figure Bis an enlarged vertical section viewed on line 8-8 of Figure 5.
Figure 9 is a viewcorresponding to Figure 8, but showing certain parts altered positions consequent to a shifted position of the dooraotuatmg mechanism, taken on line :99 of Figured.
A cabinet includes a bottom I, a top 2, a front mirror 3 attached to the top and bottom, a narrow panel 4 therebelow, which may have ornamentations at each side as indicated by the numerals 5, a rear wall 6, provided near its top with a pair of spaced suspension eyelets 1, and sideforming doors 8 and 9 which are respectively carried by a pair of hinges l0 and II which are also affixed to opposite edges of the rear wall 6. Near the bottom of its inside, the door 8 may conveniently carry a incushion l2 while the door 9 may be provided in a similiar location with a shelf 13 for collar buttons or other fasteners.
Secured in any feasible manner, as by brazing, riveting or spot welding, to the top 2, is an obtuse-angled track, rail or guideway H which is most clearly illustrated in Figure 3. The purpose of the track It is to prescribe the lines of travel, reciprocably, of a pair of U-shaped roller carriages l5, one of which is clearly shown in Figure 6. Each carriage comprises 'a pairof upper, relatively spaced and stud-supported rollers l8 located, one pair on the inner side of each of the two upstanding arms of the Ll-shaped formation. Therebelow, at the inner ends respectively of a cross rod H, are a pair of opposed rollers 18 which are suitably spaced below the rollers '15 to 'permit'interpositioning of the track 14 whereby to ease and steady the reciprocating travel or the two convergent or divergent carriages when actuated as later to be described. Extending from the interjacent section of each carriage 15am a plurality (three shown) of'parallely disposed necktie hangers I9 which are preferably fashioned with upturned extremities 2B intended to prevent neckties 21 which are folded'thereover from slipping on. As appears to view in Figure 3, the lower side of each carriage is connected-with a door; for instance, with the left door 8 by means of a link 22 which is articulated at 23 with that door and at 2 1 with one of the carriages. To be observed in Figure 3 is the position of the left carriage when its connected door 8 is open and in Figure 4 the difierent'position of the carriage on the right sidewhen its door 9 is closed.
The door and carriage-hanger actuating mechanism is next to be described. Passed through an opening provided in the panel 4, is a push or pull rod 25 which is fashioned near its outer end with a notch 26 and at its outer extremity with a knob 21. Observation of Figures 4 and '7 will disclose a coil spring 28 surrounding the rod 25 within the confines :of the lower part of the cabinet and that the ends of the spring 28 are buttressed between a depending bracket 25 attached to an inverted U-shaped bracket 29a and a rod-affixed plate 30 which is fixed to a depending flange at the opposite end of the bracket. Movement is imparted to the rod 25, either inwardly by exertion manually of a push against the knob 27 to compress the spring and simultaneously to close the two doors 8 and 9; or outwardly in response to the pressure of the spring whereby to open both doors. This coaction is accomplisha-ble by the connections illustrated and to be now explained. Articulated, by
' means of a rod-attached pin 25a which travels in a slot in the bracket 2941, as a kind of dual toggle, is one pair of interconnected links 31 and 32 and another pair of links 33 and 34, the free end of the link 3| being pivotally connected, end to end, with the link 35 and the free end of the link 33 likewise being pivotally connected, end to end, with a link 36. The links 32 and 34 are turnably connected with a pin 25b which is passed through the bracket 29a. Opposite ends of the links 35 and 36 are pivotally connected at 3'! and 38 with the doors 8 and 9 respectively. In consequence, when the rod has been shoved inwardly to the position which it is shown to occupy in Figure both doors will have assumed their closed positions. The arrangement is desirably such that an inward push exerted upon the knob 21 will draw the doors to their closing positions, whereas, an outward pull upon the knob will open both doors simultaneously and coincidently project the hangers l9 beyond the confines of the cabinet whereby to facilitate observation of the supported neckties and removal of the one selected.
The location of the notch '26 along the rod should be so contrived that when the doors are in their substantially fully closed position, a slight downward pressure on the rod Will cause a section of the margin of the hole in the panel 4, through which the rod extends, to occupy the notch 26 whereby to maintain the doors in their closing positions against the pressure exerted by the spring 28, as disclosed in Figure 5. An upward pressure on the rod 25 will release the catch means just explained and permit the spring to open both doors and to withdraw the carriages and their hangers from the cabinet until the toggle and link mechanism assumes the relationship of its parts which appears to view in Figure 4, whereupon some particular necktie (or other suspended article) may be selected and removed.
It is to be realized that the scope of my invention comprehends many equivalent constructions and that the graphical showing and the specific description are merely exemplifications of features of design or of feasible mechanical embodiments and arrangements within the scope of the granted claims.
I claim:
