1 Claim.
The present invention relates to wall tables and has for its primary object to provide a table top hingedly connected to the wall supporting structure, together with a hinged brace having one end releasably engageable with the under side of the table to support the same in its upper open position.
An important object of the present invention is to provide novel catch means carried by the brace and movable in a track carried at the under side of the table for engagement with an opening therein together with a releasing mechanism operable from a position adjacent one side edge of the table to release the catch in order that the top may be folded downwardly against the wall.
A further object is to provide a folding wall table of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational View showing the table in an open position.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the table in a folded position.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on a line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a similar view taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary edge elevational view of the free end of the brace, and
Figure '7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on a line 'I--l of Figure 6.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates a wall attached board secured in a suitable manner to a wall 6, the board forming a supporting structure for the table which includes the top I hingedly connected at its inner edge as at 8 adjacent the upper end of the board 5 to provide for the swinging of the top from the horizontal pos'tion as shown in Figure l of the drawings to the downwardly supported vertical position as shown in Figure 2. The surface of the board immediately adjacent the hinge 8 is formed with a horizontal groove 9 adapted to accommodate the inner edge of the board indicated at ID to assist in supporting the top when in its open position.
Secured to the under side of the top 1 inter mediate the side edges thereof is a pair of spaced parallel guides ll having inturned flanges l2 constituting tracks upon which is slidably positioned the end portions of a substantially T- shaped head It carried at the free end of a brace Hi.
The head It includes a tubular member I3 secured against the outer end of the brace by a U-shaped attaching plate i5 having its legs secured to the opposite sides of the brace. A bolt It extends transversely of the tubular member into the end of the brace to provide a positive anchor therefore.
The opposite end of the brace is hingedly connected to the board 5 by hinges ll.
Threaded in one end of the tubular member I3 is a cylinder it open at its outer end and closed at its inner end as shown at 29. Slidably mounted in the cylinder is a catch 21 through which a rod 22 is inserted, the inner end of the rod being slidable through the end portion 25 of the cylinder, the catch being fixed to the rod. Positioned in the cylinder behind the catch is an expansible coiled spring 23 adapted to yieldably project the catch outwardly into a position with its outer end protruding beyond the open end of the cylinder as clearly shown in Figure '7 of the drawings.
One of the guides H adjacent its inner end is provided with an opening 24 within which the catch is insertable when the brace is moved toward the inner end of the guide. The catch will thus secure the brace in position with the top 1 disposed horizontally as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
In order to release the catch for folding the top downwardly a rod 25 is slidably mounted in a pair of guides 26-25 secured to the under side of the top with one end in position for engagement with the outer end of the catch. A coiled spring 21 is mounted on the rod between the guides 26 with the outerend of the spring engaging a collar 28 secured to the rod to yieldably urge the rod outwardly toward one side edge of the table.
A manipulating handle 29 is pivotaliy mounted intermediate its ends to the under side of the table as shown at 3!] and with one end adapted for engagement with the outer end of the rod 25 to move the rod into engagement with the catch upon the manipulation f the handle. a
The front and side edges of the top 1 ar formed with a rail 3| projecting below the top and to which is secured the braces 32 struck or a wider brace installed.
It is believed the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having described the invention, What I claim is- A folding table comprising a top hinged at one edge to a supporting structure, a brace also hinged at one end to said structure below the top, a pair of spaced parallel guides secured to the underside of the top and including opposed track flanges, a transversely extending member abutting the free end of the brace, a U-shaped attaching plate secured to opposite faces of the brace at the free end thereof and embracing said transversely extending member, means anchoring the member to the brace to prevent transverse movement of the member relative to the brace, said member projecting from opposite edges of the brace for slidable engagement on the flanges of the track, one of said guides having an opening therein, a. spring projected catch projecting outwardly from one end of the member for engagement in said opening to secure the top in a horizontal position, and a releasing rod mounted under the top in position for retracting the catch when the brace is in its supporting position.
