HAMMALIAN I FOLDABLE DESK Application filed October 11, 1930. Serial Na 187,931.
This invention relates to improvements in foldable desks. V One of the objects of this invention is to provide mechanism for. causing the siniultavide lever mechanism so arranged that the manual movement of a Vertically-foldable table top into open or closed position will automatically cause a similar simultaneous opening or closing. movement of a pair of doors or closures for a lowerdesk compartment and vice versa. g
Another ob ect of my invention is to provide a mechanism of the character 'speclfied which will be simple, economical to manufac-.
ture and not likely to get out of order.
l/Vith these and other objects in View, the invention comprises the combination'of members and arrangement of parts so combined as to co-act and cooperatewith each other in the performance of the functions and the accomplishment of the results. herein contemplated, and comprises in one of its adaptations the species or preferred form illustrated in V the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a desk embodying my invention;
the desk in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig.
1, looking in the direction of the arrow,
showing the foldable parts of the desk in extended position;
Fig. 4: is a section similar to Fig. 3, showing the foldable parts of the desk in folded position; r j
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55of Fig."
1, looking in the direction of the arrow,
showing the foldable parts in extended position p Fig. 6 is a section similar to Fig. 5, showing the foldable parts of the desk in folded posi ment of such desks upon the manual movement or actuation of a vertical closure for the upper compartment which preferably comprises a table top and is supported when in extended position upon horizontally-swinging doors of the lower compartment. I will now describe a desk embodying such foldable members and having applied thereto lever mechanism of my invention which is adapted to cause simultaneous folding of such vertical and horizontally-swinging closure members. I
In the preferred form of my invention, a desk 1 is composed of a body portion of elongated shallow conformation having an upper body section 2 and a lower body section 3. The upper bodysection 2, as illustrated, is provided with the usual pigeon-hole shelves and partitions 2, 2 and has a foldable table top 4 pivoted or hinged at 5 to a horizontal dividing partition 6 and adapted to fold or swing vertically so as to open or'close the Fig. 2 is a View, in perspectve, showingupper compartment or section 2. The lower the side frame members 1 by means of hinges 8 and adapted to swing in a horizontal plane or at right angles to the plane ofmovement of the foldable table top for the upper section-4. As illustrated,said doors 7 are provided with casings 9 having filing compartments- 10fand drawers 11.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, each of the horizontally-swinging members 10 which, in the embodiment of my invention shown, comprises the doors 7 combined with the casings 9 is provided at a suitable position intermediate the hinged edge and outer edge thereof with a verticallyextending fixed peg 01'- pin 12 engageable by a hor zontally-swinging door-moving arm 13 pivoted in pivot-brackets 14 mounted within the lower compartment on the side of the casing. As shown, each arm 13 has a travelling connection with the door and, as shown, is provided with a slot 13" fitting over and engaging the pin 12 so that upon movement oi'ithe said pivoted arm 13 about its pivot, the element or) door to which thepeg 12 is connected will becaused to move or swing horizontally on its hinges 8, the peg or pinduring such movement will travel in the slot 13 and it will be seen that-such pivotal movement in opposite directions of the -arm 13 will enable the swinging of the door 7 aboutthe hinges 8 into open and closed positions respectively. In theembodiment of my invention shown, I' provide means operable upon the manual vertical movement of the writing top closure for the top section of the cabinet or desk body to actuate the lever 13 into open and closed positions respectively.
' tion shown, the crank member 15 is movable to swing the crank pivot 14 and door-moving arm 13 by providing a travelling connection between said crank-arm and operating-mechanism connected with the table top. As illustrated, I provide a crank-operating-element movable in a single horizontal plane and adapted in such movement to travel in a slot 15 in the arm 15 and during such travelling movement to swing said integrallyformed crank arm 15, pivot portion 14, and door-moving arm 13. As shown, I provide a horizontally-reciprocable sliding bracket 16 guided to move in a single horizontal plane by-means of a strap17 and carrying "on its upper surface a pin 16 adapted to engage and travel in the said slot 15'. Said bracket is reciprocated by a connecting link 18 having a pivotal connection at 18 at one end 1 with said bracket and at the other end hav ing a pivotal connection 18*-- with a pivot bracket 4 on the table top. Thebracket 16 As illustrated, the door-mov-' ing lever arm 13 is connected with a crank The parts are" duplicated at opposite sides of the desk so as to operate two doors, as shown.
In operation, a vertical movement of the table top either in closing and opening will move the "link levers 18 to reciprocate the bracket '16 along the strap or track 17 in a rectilinear line, said bracket 16, having its pin 16 engaging in the slot 15 of the arm 15, will, during .such reciprocating movement, cause a rocking otthe crank-arm and simultaneously therewith will rock the door-moving lever arm 13 which, because of its travellingconnection by means of the slot 13 and pin 12, will swing the door and casing about itsvertic'al hinge axis and these movements" of the said doors and table top are preferably soco-related through the mechanism that the doors will be opened and positioned beneath the table top when the same is moved into its full-open extended position and con-" versely, the doors will be moved intocompletely closed position just prior to the closing of the vertically-swinging table top.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A foldable desk composed of upper and lower body sections, said upper body section having a vertically-swinging hinged. closure member comprising, when extended, a writing table top and the lower body section bedoors, lever mechanism connecting said doors and table top and arranged upon vertical movement of the table top to swing the doors horizontally into folded position to close the lower compartment and into open position to support the table top, said lever mechanism comprising door-moving members pivotally mounted at the sides of the casing and having an operative connection with said doors, a crank arm operable to move said door-i moving members and extending-into the upper compartment, and lever mechanism having at one end a pivotal connection with the table top and at the other end having an operative connection with said crank arm.

A foldable desk composed of upper and lower body sections, said upper body section having a vertically-swinging hinged closure member comprising, when extended, a writ ing table top and the lower body section being provided with horizontally-swinging doors, lever mechanism connecting said doors and table top and arranged upon vertical movement of the table top to swing the doors horizontally into folded position to close the lower compartment and into open position to support the table top, said lever mechanism comprising horizontally-movable door-moving members pivotally mounted at the sides of the casing and having a slot and pin connection with said doors, a crank arm operable to move said door-moving members and extending into the upper compartment, and crank-operating mechanism having at one end a pivotal connection with the table top and at the other end having a slot and pin connection with said crank arm.
