P. HERBOLD, Jr.
I 'BED LOUNGE.
No. 246,768. Patented Sept. 6,1881.
INVENTOB ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEQ PHILIP HERBOLD, JR, OF GALION, OHIO.
BED-LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,768, dated September 6, 1881.
Application filed April 26, 1881. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I PHILIP HERBOLD, J r., of Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Lounges, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to bed-lounges having hinged sections; and it consists in constructing and combining the parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved lounge as it appears when closed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation as it appears when open. l i g. 3 is a crosssection taken on the'line a at of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the frame of the main or stationary section of the lounge, and B represents the hinged section of the lounge.
The main frame is of ordinary construction, save that the rails a a are of comparatively light or thin material, of suitable width, secured in a horizontal plane to the under side of the thick end pieces, I) b, and that the ordinary front vertical piece is cutaway, as shown at d d in Figs. 1 and 2. The end pieces, 0 c, of the hinged section correspond in size and thickness to the end pieces, I) b, of the stationary section, and are hinged thereto by the hinges c c, and the rail 6 of this section corresponds in size and thickness to the rails a of the stationary section, and is secured in a horizontal plane to the top of the end pieces, 0 c.
To the front edge of the rail 6 is hinged the board D, which, when the lounge is open, rests upon the floor and supports the rails to and e, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. When the hinged section is closed the board D is raised to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which position it supplies the place of the cut-away portion of the front vertical pieces, (Z d, and supports rail 6 by means of the wedge-shaped blocksii, which are secured to the back of the board D, resting upon the rail (1. The lower edge of the board D is provided with the springcatch j, which engages with the projection 7' when the lounge is closed, and holds the board in its proper place.
Thus constructed, it will be observed that the mattress will not be obstructed by any central ridge in the center, and that when used as a bed thecenter rails thereof are firmly supported, and that when closed the lounge has the appearance of an ordinary lounge.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The hinged board D, provided with the blocks 15 i, in combination with the stationary and hinged sections of a bed-lounge, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The end pieces, 0 c, 0f the hinged section, hinged to the end pieces, I) b, of the stationary section, in combination with the thin rails a and e and the hinged board D, provided with the blocks M, substantially as and for the purposes described.
PHILIP HERBOLD, JR.
