CARRIAGE BODY SUPPORT.
No. 246,735. Patented Sept; 6,1881.
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. DUBBS, OF LANSING, KANSAS.
CARRIAGE-BODY SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,735, dated September 6, 1881. Application filed June 24, 1881. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. Doses, of Lansing, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Carriage-Body Supports, of which the following is a specification.
In painting and finishing carriage-bodies it is necessary to support them upon their sides and ends, so that the several panels thereof can be conveniently reached for working, painting, varnishing, 86C. 5 and in order that the surfaces shall dry without blemishes from brushmarks or running of the paint or varnish, it is necessary that the surfaces be brought to a level, or nearly so.
It is now the practice to support the bodies by cross-bars secured upon them upon barrels, boxes, horses, or similar things which chance to be at hand, and to level them by means of pieces of board, sticks, &c. This method is a source of a great deal of trouble and annoyance in shifting the bodies. Besides, they are always tottering and easily knocked out of level, if not entirely off their supports.
The object of my invention is to provide novel means whereby carriage-bodies may be firmly and securely supported and turned side for side and end for end, or held in any position desired, and the surface leveled with very little trouble.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a carriagebody having a set of my supports secured upon it, the side legs being shown in full lines and the end legs in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the supports.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
It will be understood that the supports A A are to be used in sets of six or more, two to be placed upon the seat-rails and one at each corner on the bottom of the body; or they may be placed in any other manner that the style of the body requires. The body or main portion of the supports A A are of cast metal, and are provided with the perforated side pieces, a a, through which screws pass for securing the supports upon the carriage-body. Upon the under side of the main or square portion of the support is formed the round extension b, which is screw-tapped, and receives the threaded foot or leg 0, upon which the bodystands when right side up, as shownin the drawings, and by which the body, in this position, may be leveled by simply turning the legs out or in, as required.
The main or square portion of the body of the supports is bored through from side to side, forming the holes 6 e, which holes intersect each other in the center of the support, and also the screw-tap through extension I). In these holes are placed the removable and interchangeable long and short rods or legs B and B, which are firmly held in place, so as to support the body, by screwing down the foot or leg 0 upon them.
In order to support the carriage-body upon its side the rods or legs should be placed through the supports A, as shown in full lines in the drawings, and in order to support it upon its end the long rods or legs B should be placed in the supports on the seat-rails and the shorts legs in the supports on the corners of the bottom of the body, as shown in dotted lines.
It will be understood that by adjusting the rods or legs in the supports A the body can be quickly and easily leveled.
For changing the body end for end the rods in dotted lines are to be inserted in the supports A A from the opposite side.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device to be attached to carriage-bodies, to be used in sets, for supporting and leveling the bodies while being painted, varnished, and finished, consisting of rodsor legs of suitable length, and means, substantially as described, for receiving the rods from different directions and clasping the same at difierent points in their length, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The support for carriage-bodies herein shown and described, consisting of the body A, having the holes 6 and 6- through it, and the adjustable foot or leg 0, the foot or leg being adapted to level the body and to hold interchangeable rods placed in hole 6 or 6, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The body A, provided with the holes 0 and c, in combination with the adjustable screw foot or leg 0 and the interchangeable long or short legs or rods B and B, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
