J. H. FREY. Carriage-Painters Stand.
No. 225,926 Patented Mar. 30, I880.

UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H.,FREY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CARRIAGE-PAINTERS STAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No'. 225,926, dated. March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY FREY, of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stands for Carriage-Painting, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
The invention relates to stands for carriagepainting; and its object is to give the painter of carriages a cheap and convenient device on which the wheels of carriages may be supported and adjusted during the operation of painting, striping, and varnishing.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of referenceindicate like parts, Figure l is a side elevation of the stand with the bracket for supporting the wheels of carriages while being painted. Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of the bracket, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the base and upright post, of the stand.
Ais the bed or base of my stand, and is provided with a slot, a. On this base A is set in upright position the post B, and is fastened to itby a screw, av, reaching through the slot at and screwed in the center of the post B. Between the under part of the bed A and the head of screw a is a washer, a The upper part of post B is forked, and is provided with slots b and b, in which turn the trunnions of Below the center of the trunnions, on the fork, are holes 0 and c, through which passes a pin, N, which serves to fasten the work-holding bracket, with its work, in any desired angle.
The device D for holding the wheels consists of a disk, 8 provided in its center with trunnions r and r on each side, and a series of holes, 6, equidistant from the center of trunnions-r and 1' and a conical trunnion, u, cast on its periphery, in which an iron rod, to, is inserted, and a second conical collar, M,
with a set-screw, a is adjustable on said rod u. The wheel to be painted is placed between the two cones, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, on which it may be turned; or the wheel and bracket D may be swung on the trunnions r and r to any desired plane.
To prevent the stand from upsetting when the work is suspended on one side of the center of the base A, the post B can be adjusted to the one side in the slot a to secure proper support.
The base-plate A is provided with sockets h, in which are placed upright rods H, provided on top with a table, I, for holding paint, brushes, &c. The table may be constructed so as to admit removing from the rod H, and is provided with a rim around the top and with feet on the under side, on which it may stand when not used on rod H.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In a stand for carriage-painting, the combination of the base A, provided with slot at, with the upright post B and screw a, whereby post B may be adjusted and secured in base A, said post being also provided with slots or trunnion-bearings b and b and pin-holes o and o, as and for the purpose specified and described.
2. In a stand for carriage painting, the bracket D, consisting of disk 8 provided with pin-holes e and trunnions r and 7' and having rod a, conical bearings a and a and adjusting-screw a, as and for the purpose specified and described.
3. In a stand for carriage-painting, the base A, provided with slot 0, and the upright post B, provided with screw a,in combination with the bracket D, constructed as described, and for the purpose specified.
JAMES HENRY FREY.
