EUGENE MOREAU, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THEO- DORE W. STERLING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STAND FO R ROCK-DRILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,426, dated December 5, 1882,
' Application filed March 14,1882. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE MOREAU, of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stands for Rock- Drills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my im proved stand for rock-drills with a hand rockdrill attached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 00 w in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the apparatus.
This invention consists in a stand for rockdrills of novel construction,..and in a novel niode of attaching the drill thereto, whereby inoreased'facility is afforded for varyingv the positions in which the drill may be arranged to work, and for holding and securing it, as also the platform of the stand, in place, and for centering the drill or its support relatively to the length at the platform to prevent the apparatus from canting or falling over when not secured in position, as well as to bring the drill within the compass of the platform, thereby facilitating transportation of the apparatus.
A in the drawings indicates the platform of the stand, mounted on wheels b b, to which or the front ones of which blocking-screws 0 0, arranged to pass through the platform and, when required, to bear down on said wheels, are applied for the purpose of holding the apparatus from rolling or moving away from the place to which ithas been transported for'work. Leveling-screws d d may also be applied to the platform at its opposite end for the purpose of leveling and steadying theapparatns. .Pivoted to said platform at or near its center, by
a bolt, e, is an upper swinging base or arm, B,
parallel with the upper surface of the platform and resting thereon. This arm, which is arranged to move over the front half or portion of the platform-top, is held in position, either centrally inrelation to the length of the platform or to either side of a longitudinal center line, by a forward screw-clam p, 0, attached to said arm and bearing against the under side of the front'end of the platform, which end is curved, with the pivot e as a center, to adapt said clamp to it throughout the sweep of the arm. Erected upon the front or free end of this swinging arm or base B, within a divided clamping fo0t-rest, thereon, is a circular. column, D, of any desired height, and which may be provided with a jamming-screw, g, at its top for obtaining a hold for the apparatus upon the roof ofa mine or other place where the drill may be used.
E indicates a'hand rock-drillof any suitable construction. This drill is pivoted by a swive'l-bol t, h, at or about the center of the length of its frame, to one side of a splitsleeve, F,
which is constructed to be capable of moving around and up or down the column D, and which is clamped or held, when so adjusted, by a bolt, a.
By this construction of the stand and manner of hanging the rock-drill thereon the column D, with its attached drill E, may be adjusted from the central position in which it is shown either to the right or to theleft by means of the swinging arm or base B, and be secured,
when so adjusted, by theclamp G, and the drill E may have its working position still further changed by adjusting the sleeve F up or down or around the column '1), and by rocking to any desired angle or position the drill-frame on its swivel-bolt h, and afterward seeuringit as required. Such varied adjustments provide in a very simple and effective manner for arranging the drill to work in all necessary directions and at diderent points without moving 8 the platform, which latter may be leveled and held from moving, as hereinhefore described. When the drill, or column which carries it, is adjusted by the swinging arm B into a central position relatively to the length of the plat- 0 '95 Apart from the various adjustments which the construction of the stand and manner of attaching the drill affords, every facility is provided by means of the adjustable clamping foot-rest f, split sleeve F, and swivel-bolt h for dismemberin g the apparatus, including the column D, when required.
I am aware that it is not new to swivel a brake-shoe on the end of a screw which is employed to force it against the wheel to produce sliding friction, or to arrange adrill ona twowheeled hand-truck to which is attached a plate on which a hollow column maybe turned, or to combine an extensible beam with a slotted clamping-band with arms upon which drill-spindles are mounted, and provided with weighted legs affixed to a movable ring; but What Iclairn as newand of myinvention is 1. The combination, with the rock-drill platform A and the supporting-wheels b b, of the blocking-screws c 0, working through the platform against the wheels, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the platform A, of the arm B, pivoted thereto at or near its center, parallel with the upper surface thereof,
with the pivot c, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the column carrying the rock-drill, of the divided clamping footrest f, the arm or base B, and the jammingsorew g at the upper end, whereby the rockdrill may be firmly held in position, as described.
4. The combination ofthe platform A, mounted on wheels I), the swinging arm or base B, the column D, carried by said base, the sleeve F, adjustable along and around said column, and a rock-drill, E, connected with said sleeve on its one side by a swivel-bolt, h, substantially as specified.
EUGENE MOREAU.
