lliiiiiln iilllliilfl 1M1 w I Patented Apr. 12, 1949 IiJNITED snares satires-r @FFMIE PAPERZ DISBENSING APPARATUS Stanley Lewis, Brookline, Mass Application January -9, 1946; Serial No: 640,089
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to paper dispensing apparatus and more especially to toilet paper dispensing devices which are enclosed in casings open at their forward ends and sunk in apertures in the walls of buildings with their forward ends practically flush with the walls.
In dispensers of this type, difficulty has long been experienced in inserting the arbor-mounted roll of paper in its casing and the ends of the arbor in their bearings on account of lack of working space, and many somewhat complicated expedients have been proposed for this purpose.
It is the object of my invention to provide a dispenser of the above-described type whereby the difficulty aforesaid is overcome by an extremely simple device which may be manufactured at low cost and which, on account of its simplicity and the small number of parts involved, is not likely to fail after long usage.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical elevation of a paper dispensing apparatus embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation.
Fig. 5 is a plan view on an enlarged scale showing the movable parts in open or inoperative position.
Fig. 6 is a section on an enlarged scale taken on the line B6 of Fig. 1.
In the particular drawings selected for more fully explaining the principle underlying my invention and which will be considered illustrative, merely, and not restrictive, I0 is a casing open at its forward end and constructed and arranged to be disposed within an aperture of a building of such size that the front end of the casing will be substantially flush with the surface of the wall, as indicated in Fig. 4. Secured to and surrounding the forward edges of the casing is a rim II, the inner face of which abuts the building wall. Disposed within the casing are two arms I2, I3, which, in any suitable manner, are pivotally connected to the side walls I4, I5, of the casing, respectively. The arms I2, I3, may with advantage be connected to the arm I6 or formed integral therewith, said arm I6 being substantially parallel with one of the end walls of the casing II herein shown as the upper wall thereof. In the present instance, the means shown for pivotally connecting the yoke formed by the arms I2, I3, I6, or the arms I2, I3, if the arm I6 is not employed, is shown in Fig. 6 and comprises the stud I8 passing through apertures in the arm I3 and wall I5, the ends of said stud being headed over, and said arm being spaced from said wall by any suitable means, herein shown as a roller I9.
The arbor 20, which supports the roll of paper 2|, indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 4, is connected by the hinge 22 to the free end of the arm I2 and latching means, such as indicated at 23, preferably are provided for removably securing the free end of the arbor to the outer end of the arm I3. In the present instance, the latching means comprises a button 24 secured to a plate spring 25 riveted to the arm I3, as shown, said button taking into a correspondingly shaped depression 26 in the end of the arbor. For retarding the swinging movement of the yoke, any suitable resilient means engaging one or both of the arms I2, I3, may be employed. In the present instance, the retarding means consists of the spring 21 riveted to the side wall I5 and arranged to co-operate with an aperture 28 in the arm I3, as illustrated in detail in Fig. 2.
In order to limit the swinging, in the present i instance, the downward movement of the yoke to its operative position, any suitable stop device may be employed, and, in the present instance, this stop is shown in the form of a spring 29 riveted at both ends to the side wall I5 of the casing and bent to form a seat 30 against which 1 is in its lowermost position and the other portion thereof being disposed to bear against said latching means and maintain the same against the free end of said arbor when the latter is in operative position. In order to insert a roll of paper in the casing, the yoke and arbor are rotated about the yoke pivots to substantially horizontal position, the arbor swung around its hinge until it is in alignment with the arm I2, the roll of paper is then placed over the arbor and the arbor swung rearwardly and latched to the arm I3, whereupon the yoke is restored to its normal or operative position.
Having thus described an illustrative embodiment of my invention without, however, limiting the same thereto, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A paper dispensing apparatus comprising in combination, a casing open at its forward end and disposed within an aperture in the wall of a building with its front end substantially flush 3 with the wall, a yoke disposed within said casing, said yoke comprising an arm parallel with one of the end walls of said casing and an arm at either end thereof extending at right angles thereto, means pivotally connecting said yoke to the side walls of the casing, an arbor hingedly connected to the free end of one of said arms and engaging the free end of the other of said arms when said yoke is in operative position,
latching means removably securing the free end 10 Number of said arbor to the end of the last mentioned arm, and a resilient stop member secured to said casing and limiting the swinging movement of said yoke to its operative position, one portion of said resilient stop member constituting a, seat disposed to receive one of said arms when the latter is in its lowermost position and the other portion thereof being disposed to bear against said latching means and maintain the same 4 against the free end of said arbor when the latter is in operative position.
