1 Claim. 1

This invention relates to an improved foundation garment of the combined corset and brassiere type, such as shown, for example, in my prior Patent No, 2,295,607, dated September 15, 1942.

The primary object of the present invention is to provide a horizontally yieldable garment of the above kind which may be adjusted as to girth so as to properly fit the body and exert the desired pressure on the abdomen and diaphragm, thereby insuring maximum comfort and freedom of movement to the wearer and keeping the body of the wearer in proper form.

Another object is to provide a garment of the above kind which is simple in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient to adjust, don and remove.

The exact nature of the present invention, as well as more specific objects and features thereof, will become apparent from the following description when considered. in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a garment constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof;

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same, looking at the inside of the front portions of the garment; I

Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section, taken substantially on line 44 of Figure 3; and

Figure 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section, taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the present garment includes two separate, substantially

similar half sections

5 and 6, each comprising a front portion 1 and a back portion 8 stitched together along their adjacent vertical edges at 9. The other vertical edges of the front portions E meet centrally of the front of the garment and are separably connected by sets of hook and eye fasteners IE3 at the upper and lower portions of the garment and by a set of stud and eye fasteners II between the sets of fasteners Ill. The other vertical edges of the back portions 8 meet centrally of the back of the garment and are adjustably connected by upper, intermediate and lower lacings 12, I3 and it, so that the garment may be separately adjusted as to girth in upper, intermediate and lower zones thereof.

Each front portion 1 includes a lower member composed of spaced, narrow, vertical inelastic panels l5 and i6 and a narrow vertical elastic panel I! which is horizontally yieldable and con nects the major upper portions of panels l5 and t6, the lower part It of panel it being widened and directly stitched at l8 to the lowerpart of panel l5, and a horizontally yieldable elastic insert I9 being provided in the lower part of panel l5 to allow freedom of movement at the hips while keeping them in proper form. The panel I! performs the same function with respect to the waist and diaphragm. Each front portion also includes a breast cup member 20 stitched to the upper ends of panels l5, l6 and I1.

Each back portion 8 includes inelastic panels 2| and 22 which are sewed together along adjacent vertical edges and have stifi'eners at 23 along such edges. Other stiffeners are provided at 24 along the laced edges of back portions 8 and at 25 along the portions of the edges of front portions I which are joined by the fasteners H. The back portions 8 extend above the lower members of the front portions 1, and the outer side edges of the breast cup members to the adjacent side edge portions of the extended upper parts of said back portions. 1 and 8, and breast-supporting straps 21 extend across the lower portions of the breast cup members 20.

A diaphragm-controlling belt 28 is provided across and at the inside of the lower member of each front portion 1, and this belt consists of spaced narrow vertical

inelastic panels

29 and 36, and a narrow vertical elastic panel 3| which is horizontally yieldable and connects the

29 and 30. Vertical stiffeners 32 are provided for the panels 29 intermediate their vertical edges, and the outer edges of

panels

29 and 30 are respectively sewed to the body panels l5 and I5 near their outer edges, as at 33 and 34. The lower portions of panels 29 are provided with depending tabs 35, and hose supporters 36 depend from these tabs and the lower edges of panels I 5. Between their outer vertical edges, the belts 28 are free of connection with the body of the garment.

Minor changes and modifications may be made and resorted to, such as fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

A foundation garment of the combined corset and brassiere type, comprising two separate substantially similar half sections, each including a front portion and a back portion stitched together along their adjacent vertical edges, the other vertical edges of the front portions meeting centrally of the front of the garment, means sep- 20 are sewed arably connecting said other vertical edges of the front portions, the other vertical edges of the back portions meeting centrally of the back of the garment, upper, intermediate, and lower lacings adjustably connecting said other vertical edges of the back portions, each front portion including a horizontally yieldable lower corset member composed of spaced inelastic panels and an elastic horizontally yieldable panel connecting said inelastic panels, each front portion also including an upper brassiere breast cup member stitched to the upper ends of said inelastic and elastic panels of the lower corset member, the back portions extending above the lower corset members of the front portions and having the outer side edges of the upper breast cup members sewed to the adjacent upper side edge portions thereof, and a diaphragm controlling belt REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
