Application March 13,1947, Serial No. 734,393
3 Claims. 1.
This invention relates to brassieres and has for an object-to provide-a women's garment of this character which-is-separable at the front rather thanatthe rear as in'conventional brassires, to facilitate donning thereof;
Another object of'th'e'invention is to provide a brassire which is formed of back-connected similarbreast-supporting pockets separably joined at the front for greater convenience in donning thereof;
Another objectofitheinvention is to provide an improved brassiere structure in which each pocketiiszformediofias single piece of 1 woven material having the warp and weft threads-so directed that. the said material resistsstretch in 1 the direction around the body and is on a bias for suitable stretch in the breast engaging portionss My. invention. alsouhas for its objects to provide such means that are positive in operation, convenient in use, easily installed in a working positionzand easily disconnectedtherefrom, economical of manufacture, relatively simple, and of general superiority and serviceability.
The invention also comprises novel details of construction and novel combinations and arrangements of parts, which will more fully appear in the course of the following description. However, the drawings merely show and the following description merely describes one embodiment of the present invention, which is given by way of illustration or example only.
In the drawings, like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere according to the invention and shown in use.
Fig. 2 is a broken view of one pocket-forming brassiere part in flat or pattern condition drawn to an enlarged scale.
The present brassire comprises identical but oppositely formed breast-supporting pockets 5 which are connected together at the back by rigid or elastic means, a separable fastener 8 connecting said pockets at the front, and, optionally, straps 'I for supporting the brassiere from the shoulders.
Each pocket 5 is formed of a single piece of woven material as shown in Fig. 2. Said piece of material is formed with an upper laterally directed part 8, a lower oppositely laterally directed part 9 and a transverse intermediate connecting part l0 whereby said piece of material is generally Z-shaped with the part 9 considerably longer than the part 8.
The part 8 is defined by an end edge H, a bot- 2 tom reversely curved'edge l2, and an uppenedge which comprises edge portions IS'and'Hl; which? include an obtuse'angle.
The part 9 is defined by a slightly concavely' curved bottom edge 15 and similar oppositely: curved upper edge it which curves more sharply 1 outward as it approaches the end of edge portion it.
The transverse part illis defined by a reversely' curved edge l'i substantially at right angles'to' the edge l2; an adjacent extensionoi the edg-e i5, and the adjacent portions of the edgesM and lfii As shown, either thewarp threads ortlie wein threads of the material extendlaterally, i; e., longitudinally of the partsll and 9 so that said parts, in themselves, have no longitudinal stretch:
The piece of material above described is formed into a breast-supporting pocket 5 by bringing the" edges- 12 and i! together and sewing'along the line lil shown in Fig. l. A bulgein the material is thuscreated to receive the breast; It willbe noted that thewarp' threadswhich are'horiz'ontal in the part 8 are now generally vertical and that the initially vertical weft threads of said part align themselves with the horizontal warp threads of part 9 so that longitudinal stretch of the pocket is obviated. 1
It will be further noted that, with respect to point [9 which resides on the vertical center line of the pocket, the warp and weft threads are on a bias so that the bulge thus formed has both vertical and horizontal stretch whereby said pocket seeks a domed breast-contouring shape. The dash line 20 of Fig. 2 indicates said vertical center line and reveals the bias disposition of the material.
The curved dot-dash lines 2|, on opposite sides of the line 2!), represent the location of a tape which is sewn to the under face of each pocket to define the stretchable bulge apart from nonstretchable parts of the pocket. A similar tape may be applied along the lower edge of each pocket 5.
The fastener 6 is shown as a separable slide fastener of conventional form and its cooperating parts are sewn to the edge part l3 of each pocket. Said edge part, being substantially on the straight of the material, the longitudinal pull of the pockets is taken directly by said fastener without undesired stretch.
The straps 1 are generally of typical form and complete the brassir so that the same can be donned in a manner similar to coat or vest and the fastener 6 connected.
While I have illustrated and described what I now regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention, the construction is, of course, subject to modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to restrict myself to the particular form of construction illustrated and described, but desire to avail myself of all modifications that may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a brassiere of the character described, similar breast-supporting pockets separably connected at the front, each pocket being formed of a single piece of woven material having an upper laterally directed portion, a lower oppositely directed portion and a generally transverse connecting portion, the Warp threads of the material being directed along the length of the laterally directed portions, said upper lateral portion having a reversely curved lower edge and said transverse portion having a similar edge forming an angle with said lower edge, and said edges being adapted to be joined to form a breast-receiving bulge in which said warp threads have a bias direction, tapes secured to the underside of each pocket to define the stretchable area from the non-stretchable area said upper lateral portion having an upper edge formed by edge portions which include an obtuse angle, the end edge of said upper lateral portion comprising a part of the bottom edge of the pocket.
In a brassiere of the character described, similar breast-supporting pockets separably connected at the front, each, pocket being formed of a single piece of woven material having an upper laterally directed portion, a lower oppositely directed portion and a generally transverse connecting portion, the warp threads of the material being directed along the length of the laterally directed portions, said upper lateral portion having a reversely curved lower edge and said transverse portion having a similar edge forming an angle with said lower edge, and said edges being adapted to be joined to form a breast-receiving bulge in which said warp threads have a bias direction, the bulge having means to limit the stretchable area said upper lateral portion having an upper edge formed by edge portions which include an obtuse angle, the end edge of said upper lateral portion comprising a part of the bottom edge of the pocket and the adjacent mentioned edge portion comprising the outer and edge of said pocket.
3. In a brassire of the character described, similar breast-supporting pockets separately connected at the front, each pocket being formed of a single piece of woven material having an upper laterally directed portion, a lower oppositely directed portion and a generally transverse connecting portion, the warp threads of the material being directed along the length of the laterally directed portions, said upper lateral portion having a reversely curved lower edge and said transverse portion having a similar edge forming an angle with said lower edge, and said edges being adapted to be joined to form a breast-receiving bulge in which said warp threads have a bias direction and whereby said end edge of the upper lateral portion and the bottom edge of the lower oppositely directed portion form a continuous lower edge of the pocket.
