SACK AND BAG SEAL AND FASTENER Filed March 26, 1945 /0 INVENTOR.
ATTCI R N EYEi Patented Mar. 29, v1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SACK AND BAG SEAL AND FASTENER John Thomas Greenslade, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada 1 Claim. 1
My present invention relates to improvements in closures and sealing means for bags, sacks and the like.
It is of importance in closing bags or sacks used for sugar, our, grain and the like to completely seal up the opening through which the bag has been lled so that the contents will not be spilled therefrom, and it has been customary in the past to sew up such bags. It is obvious that if such sewing is to be effective, it is a slow painstaking process.
The object in the present invention is therefore to provide a bag, sack or the like having sealing means which effectively prevent the spilling of sugar, our, grain, feed and the like without the necessity of sewing up the opening of the bag. A further object is to provide a bag, sack or the like having closure means which, while effectively sealing the bag, are quickly and easily engaged and disengaged.
According to the invention there is therefore provided a bag or the like having a mouth adapted to be collapsed to bring opposite side Walls thereof together, these side walls being of substantially equal length, and a flap member rectangular in shape is secured along one edge to the inside of one of the side walls of the mouth along a line substantially parallel to the outer limit of the mouth. This line along which the flap is secured is removed from the outer limit of the mouth so that there is formed between the flap and the outer portion of the side wall to which it is connected what may be called a pocket which will receive the outer portion of the other side wall when it is folded over. This so-called pocket is in fact open at the sides. Means are preferably then provided on the flap member adapted to pass through the side wall to which it is not connected and thereafter to be passed through the side wall to which it is connected and thereafter to be engaged by retaining means on the side wall to which it is connected. In a preferred form, these means pass also through the side to which the flap is attached before engagement by the retaining means.
According to a modification of the invention, the flap member extending from side to side of the bag mouth is replaced by a plurality of relatively narrow tabs secured at one end to one side wall and having secured to the other end means for engaging retaining means on said side wall after having passed through the opposite side wall.
The invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mouth of a bag embodying the preferred form of the invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the bag .mouth shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detail in section of the mouth of the bag in sealed condition showing one form of closure means;
Figure 4 is similar to Figure 3 showing a modied form of closure means;
Figure 5 is a vertical section through the bag mouth according to a modied form of the invention;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of the inside `surface of the bag shown at the left hand side board II or similar material. As shown in Fig" ure 2, the mouth of the bag may be folded over the cardboard or the like. The result is to form what may be called a rim portion of the mouth of the bag which is of increased body.
Substantially at the bottom of this rim on one rof the side walls and which is marked Illa, there is attached an elongated rectangular flap I2. This flap I2 is secured to the side wall Illa only along its lower edge and extends outwardly towards the outer limit of the mouth of the bag forming between the flap I2 and the outer portion of the wall I'Za what may be termed for the sake of convenience an open ended pocket I3 adapted to receive the outer portion of the side wall I 0b when it is folded over on top of the flan I2.
Holes I4 and I5 are formed in the side Walls II'Ib and Illa respectively and the flap I2 is provided with closure members I6 adapted to pass through the holes I4 and I5 (in that order) when the outer part of the side wall IIIb is first folded over the flap I2 and then the outer part of the side wall Illa is folded over the outer part of the side wall Ib. In the modification shown in Figure 4, the member I 6' has formed at its end a tubular portion I1 and on the outside of the outer portion of the side wall Ia there is attached a tab I8' adapted to engage this tubular portion and hold the two side wall portions and the flap in engagement as shown in Figure 4.
firm engagement of the side wall IIlb between the flap I2 and the side wall Illa. Any contents which might escape would have to pass around the' end of the flap I2, along the width of'. thel flap I2^ between it and the side wall Ib, aroundv theend of the side wall IIIb held in engagement with the side wall Ia, and along the contacting surfaces of the side walls Illa, and I0b.
In Figures and 6 there is shown a modification in which the flap I2 is replaced by a plurality of tabs" 2`I secured at one end to the side wall lila and having at its other end a closure member with retaining means which may resemble the tubular partll shown in Figures 1 to 3. These tabs are passed through holes 2'2 formed in the side wall I0b, and the sidewall IIlb is folded over so that its edge 23 will be in contact with or very close to the inside surface of the side wall Illa between the point atv which the tab is secured to the side Wall IIJa and the hole 24. The tabsV 2lv are then passed through the hole 24 from the inside ofi the bag; the side wall IIla isy folded downr on. top of the outer surface of the side wallV Ib and.' the side wall Illa is held in position folded against side walls I'Ilb by retaining means which may be the tab IB described with reference to Figures 1 to 3.
As will be understood, it is not necessary that the portion of the mouth which has been describedas the rim should be reinforced as shown in Figure 2. Such reinforcing may be entirely dispensed with ormay be provided in only one sid'e wall, as is shown in Figure 5, the cardboard or other reinforcing material 25 being provided* only in the sid'e wall IIIb.
In the' modified form shown in Figure '7, the sack' or' bag I0 is reinforced at the mouth on both` sides of the opening at 2li` and 26a. A reasonable number of openings 28 and 29 are made in the side walls, for instance, four or more. The open'- ings in one side wall are located higher than those in the remaining side Wall, and the flap member 21 runs the width of the sack and is attached to said first side wall. The hooks 30 rst enter the hole 24. Parts Illa and 26 are then folded over flap 21, and parts Illb and 26a are then folded over parts IIIa and 26, and the metal hooksenter the hole 29 tof seal the sack.
From the foregoing, it'isibelieved that the operation and advantages of my invention will be apparent, but it is pointed out that changes in form size, shape, materials, construction and arrangement of parts is: permissible and within my broad inventive concept.A Interpretation of the scope of! myifnvention should only be conclusive when made in the light of the subjoined claim.
I claim A7 bag having upper end portions adapted in closing the bag to be folded one upon the other into a position substantially normal to the sides of the bag, said end portions' being providedwith a plurality of openings adapted to register' when. said end portions are in folded position, a iiap within the mouth portion of' the `bag secured below the foldabl'e endportions along one longitudinal edge. only to a side of the bag,r said flap being, adaptedf to underlie said end; portions when saidl end portions areY folded, a corresponding plurality of. elernentsJeach` having, an angularly formed rod like portion and' a tubular end portion supported. by the flap for passage through said.: openings when said. end portions. are. folded,x and-.means carried by one oi saldi end portions for engagement with Ysaid. elements to retain the bag.
