3 Claims.v (01.120-38-l This invention relates to a casing formed of detachablel sections adapted for-` use with consurnable elements such as eraser-s for; pencils, grease marking pencils, lipsticks, crayons, belt' dressing sticks or similar consumable elements,

and has for a particular object to provider an iin-- proved construction of casing capable of being detached in sections as the' element is consumed to leave only a limited portion of the element exposed and to provide a casing or holderwh-ich will protect the unexposed portionl of they element againstbreakage or other injuries.

Another object of the invention is to provide a casing or holder of the aforeclescribed character of extremely simple constructionl andy which may be formed of thin metal or plastic.

Still another aimof thev invention is to provideA a holder or casing having means formingA a partof each oi'- the detachable sections thereof for effectively anchoring the consumable element adjacent its exposed end to the casing; said anchoring means also functioning to facilitate removal of the detachable section of which it forms a part.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fullyapparent from the following description of the drawing, illustratingpreierred embodiments, of the invention, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a por tion of a pencil and showing one embodiment of the invention applied thereto for mounting an eraser on an end of the pencil;

Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal, substantially central sectional view taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2--2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the casing or holder of Figures 1 and 2 is formed, and

Figure 4 is a plan view of another form of the holder.

Referring more specifically to the drawing, and first with reference to the form of the invention as illustrated in Figure 1 to 3, for the purpose of illustrating this embodiment of the invention, a. portion constituting one end of a conventional lead pencil 5 and a conventional type of eraser 6 is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. The eraser 6 differs from the conventional eraser applied to an end of a lead pencil in that it is of a substantially greater length made possible by its being supported by the holder or casing, designated I and comprising the invention.

The casing or holder 'I is formed from a thin strip of sheet metal or may be formed of plastic whichAv is rolledI into; cylindrical form, as. illus trategd in. Figures. 1 and' 2. The cylindrical holder' l is open at its ends, and one end. thereof, formw ing'the portion 3, it is adapted to be applied over: an` end off the lead pencil 5. The portion 8 is.pro vided with spaced' annular indentations or imwardly extending ribs 9 which are imbedded in the outerpart of the lead pencil 5 for anchoring the holder 'I thereto. The eraser 6 is disposed in the holder or casing 1 from the portion 8 to the. opposite end thereof and has one end projecting:

One end' of the holder or casing l is composed'Y of a plurality of individually detachable sections, each'l designa-ted I2 and each of which is formed" by scoringthe holderr 'l along a circum-A ferential line I3 between the ends of 'an arcuate line I4: along which the holder T isl completely cut through or severed and which is formed in the inner edge portion of each detachable section I2. An arcuate cut line I4 forms a tab I5 that projects from the outer edge of each section I2 and another forms a tab I5 that projects from the outer edge of the holder section I 0. The tabs I5 are pressed inwardly, as seen in Figure 2, so as to be imbedded in longitudinally spaced portions of the periphery of the eraser 6 for combining with the indentation II to anchor the eraser in the holder 1 and to provide additional means for anchoring the eraser in each undetached section I2 and also just beyond the outermost undetached section I2. Each of the sections I2 is yalso provided with a scored line I6 which is a helix and extends from one end of the tab I5 of said section across a longitudinal line passing centrally through the tabs I5 and which terminates at the opposite scored line I3 of the section at a point angularly spaced a distance from the tab I5 thereof.

From the foregoing it will be readily apparent that the exposed end of the eraser 6 may be used in a conventional manner until it is worn down substantially to the outer edge of the outer detachable section I2. The protruding tab thereof is then bent outwardly and out of engagement with the eraser 6 and by exerting an outward pull on the tab I5, said outer section I2 will be torn along its scored line I 6 and thence along the scored line I3 connecting it to the next section I2, so that said outer section I2 may be entirely stripped and detached from the holder 1. It will then be readily apparent that the next tab I5 will be disposed beyond the new outer end of the holder I so that this operation can again be repeated when the eraser 6 is worn down to the next detachable section I2. Obviously, the number of detachable sections I2 may be varied, depending upon the length of eraser desired, and the width of the individual sections I2 may likewise be varied.

Another embodiment of the holder, designated 4 templated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A holder for consumable sticks or the like comprising a hollow substantially tubular casing adapted to engage closely around a portion of the stick and from one end of which an end of said stick projects, a portion of the casing extending to said end being formed of a plurality of individually detachable sections formed by scoring I'I, is illustrated in Figure 4 and which is adapted to be used with crayons, greasepencils, lipsticks, -f belt dressing sticks and other consumable ele-- The holder I 'I mayV ments of a similar nature. likewise be formed from a thin sheet of metal or plastic which is formed in a cylinder and includes a shank end I8 forming the holder handle and which may be disposed around an end of a consumable stick 24 of any of the items previously mentioned. Likewise, if desired, the unexposed end of the stick 24, not shown, may extend only part way to the free end of the shank portion I8, which is preferably closed, so that `a minimum of wastage will result, since the shank portion I8 may be utilized as a handle or holder when the stick 24 is substantially consumed. .The remaining portion of the holder I 1, in which a substantial portion of the stick 24 is encased, is composed of a plurality of detachable sections I9, each similar in construction to the sections I2 and which are cut along arcuate lines to form the tabs 2I and scored along lines 22 and 23, corresponding to the scored lines I3 and I6, respectively, to enable the sections I9 to be individually detached in order from the outer to the inner ends thereof. The tabs 2l are preferably pressed inwardly initially for engagement with the stick 24 for anchoring said stick in the holder I1 in the same manner and for the same purpose as previously described in reference to 4 the holder 7.

Various modifications and changes are conand severing the casing along a plurality of A. spaced, substantially circumferential lines and 15 by scoring the individual detachable sections, formed by the aforementioned scored and severed lines, along helicallines extending between said iirst mentioned severed and scored lines whereby the outermost section may be torn away initially along its helical scored line and thereafter along a substantially circumferential scored line for stripping it from the remainder of the casing.

2. A holder as in claim 1, the severed portions of said rst mentioned severed and scored lines being arcuate and forming a tab extending into the next outwardly disposed section of the holder and the outermost detachable section having a tab protruding therebeyond and adapted to be grasped to facilitate the tearing of the section along its scored lines for detachment thereof. 3. A holder as in claim 1, the severed portions of said rst mentioned severed and scored lines being arcuate and forming a tab extending into the next outwardly disposed section of the holder, and the outermost detachable section having a tab protruding therebeyond, and said tabs being initially pressed inwardly and imbedded in the stick for anchoring the stick in the holder.
