This invention relates to a bandage for cuts, abrasions, etc., on or near the tips of fingers. One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a bandage which will not only protect an injury to the tip of a finger, but also protect an injury to the nail of the finger or any injury in the tip or nail area of the finger.

Other objects, features and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the detailed description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which show the preferred embodiment of my invention and in which Figure l is a plan view of the bandage showing the same in complete condition ready for sale by the manufacturer thereof;

Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 1 with sections of the crinoline or other protective cloth removed therefrom and with the remaining sec.- tions of the crinoline partially removed.

Figure 5 is a View similar to Figures 1 and 4 with all the crinoline removed therefrom and with the bandage in condition for the first operation in the application of the same to the finger;

Figure 6 is a View of the bandage just after the rst operation in the application of the same to the finger;

Figure 6A is a side view of Figure 6;

Figure 7 is another side view illustrating a subsequent stage of the application of the bandage to the linger;

Figure S is an end view of Figure 7 looking in the direction of the finger tip; and

Figure 9 is a view showing the bandage as completely applied to the linger.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, and first to Figures l to 6, the reference numeral I5 (see Figures 2 and 3) designas a Water repellent or other appropriate, preferably squareshaped, backing of knownr construction in bandage manufacture insofar as the material is concerned. This backing at each end (opposite sides) thereof is provided with two slits, I I, I2, I3 and i4. Slit II is preferably in alignment with slit I3, and slit I2 is preferably in -alignment with silt I-. Hence they divide the backing I@ into three right parallelograms, that is to say, a body member I5 and two side or Wing portions i5 and The slits at each end extend inwardly for about one-third the length of the backing, thus providing uncut portions I8 and I9 about which the wings it and I'I respectively are, so to speak, hinged. v

20 and 2| clearly shown in Figure 4 and which are adapted to be removed upon application of the bandage to the finger As shown more clearly in Figure 1, these coverings as they come from the manufacturer are, in contour, coextensive with the contours of the body member and wing portions of the bandage and are normally held in place by the adhesive coating on the face portion of the backing I The inner ends 20a and 2 Ia of these coverings 2l] and 2l meet at an intermediate point, are free and overlap to provide tabs for the ready removal from the backing of the coverings 20 and 2 I in applying the bandage.

The body portion I5 is equipped with a plain or antiseptic gauze I9@ preferably of substantially equal width, insofar as tip injuries are concerned, as the body portion, and held thereto by the adhesive thereunder. See Figures l, 4, 5 and Obviously, the gauze may be extended laterally beyond the body member and over a part of the 'wing portions without departing in 4any wise from my invention. The length of this gauze is less than the length of the body portion I5, thus providing

22 and 23 at the ends of the body portion I5 for partially securing the bandage to the linger. Suitable vents 24 are provided in the body member as shown in substantially all the figures. See particularly Figure 8.

Referring to Figure 1 it will be noted that the body member and wing portions are each provided with the crinoline coverings 2B and 2| (see Figure 4) secured to the body portion by adhesive but readily removable therefrom upon application of the bandage to the finger. This crinoline is indicated by light cross-hatching. On Figure 1 are lightly shaded portions 25 and 28 which serve to indicate where the inner ends 28a and 2Ia of

20 and 2| overlap each other. Where the crinoline sections cover the antiseptic gauze of the body member is indicated by the darkly shaded portion and where the ends of the crinoline sections of the body member overlap and also cover the antiseptic gauze is shown by the heavily shaded portion.

It will be understood that the wing portions I6 and il are in eiect adhesive tapes which may be plain or Waterproofed, the latter adding greatly to its durability.

In applying the bandage the crinoline is rst removed from the adhesive surfaces and the :linger placed on the center portion of the bandage containing the gauze, as shown in Figure 5. The adhesive tips are then pressed firmly, one at a time, against the opposite sides of the finger as shown in Figure 6. The side portions are then folded down as also shown in Figure 6 and swung about the uncut portions as pivots in overlapping adhesive relation with the body member as shown in Figures 8 and 9, thus forming a complete finger tip bandage not easily frayed or dislodged. The construction is preferably such, when applic-d,

vthat the side edges of the wing portions are located substantially in the same plane with the rearwardly extending end edges of the body member, as shown in Figure 9. As will be obvious my bandage may be readily made in different sizes. Whether the side portions are in overlapping adhesive relation with each other when applied would depend upon the size and cut of the bandage, the size of the injured nger and other factors.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a bandage which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and quick of application by one Whose finger has been injured. It is to be observed that the bandage is adapted to cover the entire tip and nail area of the finger, that is to say, when the bandage is applied the gauze is adapted to cover the tip and lateral sides of the finger. The construction is also such, when applied, that the cap thereof, designated by C in Figures 8 and 9, acts as a cushion to` enable the wearer to use the injured digit without aggravating the Wound. The durability and sturdiness of my bandage` is very great, as it provides a maximum of anchorage due t the large adhesive surfaces and the method of securing the ends of the body member and the wing portions in overlapping adhesive relation with one another. Furthermore,` the bandage is so constructed that in applying the same the side edges of the wing portions are adapted' to be located in substantially the same plane with the rearwardly extending end edges of the body member, as clearly shown in Figure 9, thus giving the bandage when applied a desirable neatnessk in appearance and obviating the possibility of fraying or peeling. The uniform sizes of the body member and Wing portions with their straight lines greatly facilitates the mannfactu-re thereof- This invention is presented to fill' a need for improvements in a finger tip bandage. It is understood that various modications in structure, as Well as changes in assembly and manner of use, may and often do occur to those skilled in the art, especially after benefiting from the teachings of an invention. Hence, it will be understood that this disclosure is illustrative of preferred means of embodying the invention in useful form by explaining the construction and advantages thereof.

What is claimed is:

1. In a bandage for covering the entire tip and nail area of the finger, which comprises a water repellent or similar backing of rectangular shape having two slits extending inwardly and longitudinally from each of the ends thereof for approximately one third of the length thereof to form a body member and two wing portions, the ends of said body member being provided with adhesive strips adapted to engage the nger at substantially equal distances from the tip and on opposite sides of the finger, and at least one of the wing portions being provided with adhesive thereon and adapted to be bent or swung about the uncut portions crosswise of and over the` finger in adhesive relation with Said body member.

2. In a bandage for covering the entire tip and nail area of the linger, which comprises a water repellent or similar backing of rectangular shape having two slits extending inwardly and longitudinally from each of the ends thereof for approximately one third of the `length thereof and with each slit on one end in alignment with a slit on the opposite end to form a rectangular body member and two rectangular wing portions, the ends of said body member being provided with adhesive strips adapted to engage the finger at substantially equal distances from the tip and on opposite sides of the nger to partially secure the bandage to the nger, and the wing portions being i provided with adhesive thereon and adapted to be bent or swung about the uncut portions crosswise of and over the finger in adhesive relation with said body member.

3. A nnger tip bandage comprising a waterk repellent or similar backing, said backing consisting of a substantially rectangular-shaped Ibody member and two substantially rectangularshaped adhesive Wing portions formed by two longitudinal slits extending inwardly from each of the ends thereof, a sterile pad mounted upon the body member with the ends of the body member extending beyond the pad to form adhesive strips which, when the body member is bent over the end of the iinger, the adhesive strips are adapted to engage on opposite sides of the ringer to partially secure the body member thereto, said wing portions, when the body member of the backing is bent over the finger, being adapted to swing about the uncut portions as pivots and to be bent crosswise of and over the finger in overlapping adhesive relation with each other and with the body member.
