Description

I. W. IVORY.
PROTECTOR AND GUIDE SHEAIH FOR NAIL FILES.
APPLICATION FILED NOV-10, I919.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIWI I l I JAMES W. IVORY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PROTECTOR AND GUIDE-SHEATH FOR N AIL-FILES.
Application filed November 10, 1919. Serial No. 336,963.
To all whom 2 3771011] concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES TV. hour, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Protector and Guide-Sheath for Nail-Files, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in providing a nail file with a protector and guide sheath therefor, the construction of the same and advantages of the same being hereinafter described, and the novel features thereof pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumenta'lities the eof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figures 1 and 2 represent views of opposite faces of the protector and guide sheath embodying my inventiomthe same including a file to which the device is applied.
Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof on line 33 Fig. 1.
Fig. l represents a face view of the sheath itself.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 represent transverse sections thereof on lines respectively 5-5, 66 and 7-? Fig. 1.
Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11 represent other em bodiments of my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings,
designates a nail file which excepting features of my invention applied thereto f well known form.
signates a sheat 1, the same consisting pointed plate 3 of suitable piece of metal, horn. celluloid, or other suitable material, having on its sides in the longitudinal direction thereof the flanges 4: which extend at an angle from said sides. thus forming in a measure a channel in which the file is seated, the file frictionally engaging the inner walls of said flanges and so retaining its position on the sheath, this being assisted by the lips which are inturned from proper portions of the flanges and overhang the file thereat, as most plainly shown in Fig. 1.
In the face of the file near the point 6 of the sheath are the tapering or beveled grooves or channels 7 which lead to the inner fipecification of Letters'Patent.
, faces beveled, or they said flanges being on contact with these soft Patented Feb.
sides of the adjacent portions of the flanges and serve to guide the nail to said portions, either of said grooves or channels being adapted to receive the edge of a nail for that purpose.
The sheath in Figs/1,2, 3, and-4 is extended beyond the head end of the file forming the handle 8 for operating the device, while in Fig. 8, the handle is of increased length providing a greater grasping surface;
The end of the fileat the point portion of the'sheath has the slope 9 thereon, the same serving to guide the nail from said portion to the adjacent surface of the file.
In Fig. 9, a point sectionlO of horn, hard rubber, etc., continuous of the relative end of a short file is riveted or otherwise secured firmly to the sheath. Continuous of the other end of the file is the auxiliary handle section 11 which is seated on the sheath and retained in position by the flanges 4 and lips 5 and serving to strengthen the portion of the sheath to which said section 11 is applied.
It will be seen that the flanges 4 are of a height equal to the thickness of the file and extend above the face of the latter, the extended portions having their inner walls or may be semi-rounded, opposite sides of the sheath.
It will be seen also that in the use of the device thefianges 4 give the angle that the file should have as it engages the nail, so that the file will not cut the nail on a perpendicular line but slightly under corresponding to the angle of the bevel of the guide flanges which latter act as a shield to protect the soft tissues or quick sensitive fibers of connective tissues and delicate skin fibers from the edges of the teeth of the file, as said flanges on the shield stand in the way so that the edges of the file cannot come in tissues beneath the nail. i
The grooves or channels 7 facilitate the entrance of the free end of the nail to the file, the flanges taking the same bevel as the side flanges so as to be readily applied to the corners of the nail to be filed.
The point of the sheath which extends beyond the file is for cleansing beneath the nail, and the handle portion 8 having its outer end rounder. is adapted as a cuticle pusher, the same being true of the corresponding end of the handle section 11.
end of the sheath and takes the place of the point 6 of the latter as a cleanser beneath a inwardly so tending therefrom,
nail, and it is cut away on its side borders so as not to interfere with the nail in its pas-- sage on the edge of the sheath, the flanges :of the latter extending above the cut away borders of said section l0, the same being true of the handle section 11, and thislatter section may also serve as a cuticle pusher.
If desired, the flanges 4 may be beveled as to take hold of the file, in which case the file may be fitted into the sheath by sliding it on the plate or back 2 of the sheath through the lips 5 and between thebeveled flanges, whereby the sheath is firmly connected with the fileand the latter may be readily removed from the sheath by drawing it out of the same.
In Figs. 10 and 11 I showthe point portion of the file somewhat twisted or spiral, soas to cleanse both the nail and the flesh at one operation, and also adapting the points for cleansing in reverse order as the file is applied to the right hand, to the left, and vice versa. 1
Having thusdescribed my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. Asheath for a nail file consisting of a plate having on the sides thereof flanges extending therefrom, said plate being adapted to have a file endwise insertible therein and seated thereon,' and by said flanges to engage the sides of the file, the space between said flanges being tapered lengthwise oi the plate.
2. A sheath for a nail file consisting of a plate having on the siddes thereof flanges eX- to have a file endwise insertible therein and seated thereon, and said flanges to engage the sides of the file, the spare between said flanges beingtapered lengthwise of'the plate, and lips inturned from to overhang the fate of the file. V
3. A sheath for a nail file consisting of a 7 pointed plate having on the sides thereof flanges extending angularly therefrom, the le being adapted to be inserted endwise therein and to be seated on said plate and engaged by said flanges, the file having therein adjacent to its point channels leading,
to said flanges. 4. sheath plate being adapted the flanges adapted for a nail file consisting of a 7 plate having flanges on its sides, said plate being adapted to have the file endwise insertibie therein and seated thereon andhave said flanges engage the sides of the file, the space between said flanges being tapered lengthwise of the plate,a terminal of the sheath extending from the terminal of the file being adapted'to form a handle and a cuticle pusher. 1
5. A sheath for a nail file consisting of a plate having flanges on its sides, said plate being adapted to have'the file endwise insertible therein and seated thereon, and said flanges to engage the sides of the file, a point at one end of'said sheath, and a file at the point portion of the sheath having a'slope thereon.
6. A sheath for a nail file consisting of a plate having flanges on its sides, said plate being adapted to havev the file endwise insertible therein and seated thereon, and said flanges to engage the sides of the file, a point at one end of said sheath, and a handle and cuticle pusher on the other end, and a file at the point portion of the sheath having a slope thereon.
9. A sheath pointed at one end and having side flanges and bendable lips on said flanges, and'a file between said flanges with said lips bent thereover, said file having in its face near the point grooves beveled upon opposite sides toward said langes.
10.. A sheath pointed at one end and having side flanges and bendable lips on said flanges, anda file between said flanges with said lips bent thereover, said file having in its fa; e near the point grooves beveledupon opposite sides toward said flanges, the inner faces of the adjacent portions oi the flanges being correspondingly beveled.
