STATE This invention relates to iixtures for detachably supporting a curtain rod and pivotally supporting drapery rods on the inside of a window frame, comprising a pair of brackets attached to the opposite sides of a window frame and slidably supporting a plate arranged with a -set screw to retain said plate in adjusted position on the brackets` and said plate pivotally supporting a drapery rod;
It is an object of the invention to arrange the set screws for retaining the plates in adjusted positionv on thebrackets as supports for a curtain rod.
It is another object of the invention to provide an extensible rod for supporting drapery comprising two telescoping members having limited movement'relative to each other and slidably supported at three spaced portions of said members.
Other'objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
In the drawing'accompanying part of this application,
Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe embodiment of the invention attached toa window frame.
Figure 2'i`s`a front view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale,ltaken on the line 3-3 ,'of'Figure 1 looking inthe direction Aof the arrows and showing' a curtain rod support retainingV a slidable plate in adjusted position on a bracket,
Figure 4 is a view of the bracket looking at the right-hand side of Figure 3 witli a portion kof the bracket` broken awayto show the construction thereof.
Figure 5 is a view of the slidable plate showing the manner of forming a pair of knuckles on an end thereof.
Figure 6 is a sectional View, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows and showing the manner of limiting the movement of telescoping members of a drapery supporting rod or arm and of slidably supporting said members at three spaced portions ofthe members.
The embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises a pair of brackets, each bracket including a base portion 1 having a circular opening 8 adjacent one end for engagement of a screw to attach the base portion to an end portion of the top rail R of a window frame and an elongated opening 9 adjacent the opposite end for engagement of another screw. The elongated shape of said opening 9 permits adjustment of the bracket and forming a s PATE-NT- c 2,465,291" WINDOW CURTAIN AND DRAPERYI FIXTURE- I vWendellLi.Sorenson, GreatNeck, l v y p Application Maya-1946,` serial No; 666305 4 comme.. (ci. malaifggg onthe screw engaged in the opening 8. An arm I0 integral with the ibase -1 is bentat a right angle from said base and the material yat the juncture between Jthe-opposite end portions ofthe vbase and the opposedmarginal portions of: the arm llis'removed, as shown atl II in 4Figure 4, and said marginal portions of the arm are foldedov'er in spaced parallel relation tothe inner face of the arm, as shown at I2 in Figures 3 and 4, to flcrmopposed channels on said-face of the arm A plate I3 having a screw threaded opening I4 midway of the longitudinal edges and adjacent one end of the plate, and a pair of spaced knuckles I5 at the opposite end, is slidably mounted in the opposed channels of the arm II).v The -knuckles I5 are formed from the material of the plate I3 by removing at said opposite end 'a portion of the material of said plate midway of the longitudinal edge portions of the plate and said longitudinal edge portions Ybordering the recessV formed by said removed portion being rolled to circular shape to form the knuckles with the inner end of the recess formed by the removed portion of the plate extending inwardly of the knuckles to form a cut-out portion I6, as shownin Figure 5, for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The plates I 3-are adjusted on the bracket arms III to position the knuckles I5 in predetermined spaced relation to the window Irail R and are retained in rvsaid adjusted position by a screw threaded shank I'I integral with and projecting centrally from'` the lclosed end Ifal tubulary member I 9y forming '-a socket ifor'engagement of and supporting an end of a curtain rod 20, as shown in Figures 1, 3 and 4. The screw threaded shank I1 is engaged in the screw threaded opening I4 in the plate I3 to abut the bracket arm I0 and retain the plate I3 in adjusted position on the bracket arm I0. The exterior surface of the tubular member I9 is roughened by knurling to facilitate the tightening and loosening of the shank I1 in the opening I4.
The knuckles I5 are adapted to pivotally support a pair of extensible drapery supporting rods or arms, each rod or arm comprising a tubular member having a greater portion of its length of elliptical shape in cross section, as shown at 2I. One end portion 22 of circular shape in cross section of said tubular member is arranged with alined openings in diametrically opposite wall portions for mounting said tubular member on an intermediate portion of a pin 23 having the opposite end portions engaged in the knuckles I5. The circular end portion 22 is closed by a cap member 24 engaged in said end. Another member 25 of the extensible rod is slidable in the bore of the elliptical portion 2| of the tubular member and shown to be of corresponding tubular elliptical shape in cross section and of less cross sectional dimension than the bore of the elliptical portion 2|, as shown in Figure 6. To prevent binding of the member 25 in the elliptical portion 2| and limit the outward movement of the member 25, the elliptical portion 2| is arranged with a shoulder 26 adjacent the free end thereof and extending inwardly into the bore thereof to slidably engage and support the member 25, and said free end of the elliptical portion 2| is iianged inwardly to also slidably engage and support the member 25, as shown at 21 in Figure 6. The inner end of the member 25 is flared, as at 28 in Figure 6, to slidably engage the wall of the bore of the elliptical portion 2| and abut the shoulder 26 in the outward movement of the member 25. The member 25 is slidably supported at three spaced points in the elliptical portion 2| by the shoulder 26, the flanged end 21 and the flared end 28. The inward movement of the member 25 in the elliptical portion 2| is limited by the flared end 28 abutn ting the juncture between the elliptical and circular portions 2| and 22.
The members 2| and 25 may be of circular shape in cross section and in said formation the inward movement of the member 25 in the member 2| will be limited by the flared end 28 abutting the pin 23.
To position the arms 2 |-26 in horizontal alinemcnt with each other, the attaching screws engaged in the openings 8 and 9 are loosened and the brackets l--|2 are adjusted to proper position on the screws engaged in the openings 8 and the screws engaged in the openings 9 are iirst tightened and then the screws in the openings 8 are tightened.
rIhe recesses I6 in the plates |3 permit swinging movement of the drapery supporting arms 2 |-28 without interfering with the capped ends 24.
