OIL=CAN TIP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 246,093, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed July 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NIcHoLAs B. DENNYS, of Singapore, Straits Settlements, British India, have invented certain useful Improvements in Oil-Oan Tips, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to prevent waste from oil-cans in oiling machinery; and the invention consists in a spring-actuated tip applied to an oil-can tube for closing the outlet, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of an oil-can fitted with the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 m of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The can A, with its tube B, is of ordinary character, except that the tube, insteadof being tapered to a small outlet, has its outer end made with a cylindrical portion, a, that forms a shoulder on the main tube.
0 is the tip, of tubular form, and of a size for fitting loosely in cylinder to, and having its 2 5 inner end closed by a cap, b, which projects to form a flange. This flange takes beneath the shoulder of the tube B and limits the outward movement of the tip. 1n the sides of the tip 0, near the inner end, there are orifices c. A spring, d, fitted in tube B between the lower end of tip 0 and a cross-pin, e, retains the tip outward, so that its flanged end I) prevents (No model.)
escape of oil. By a movement of the tip inward the orifices c are brought down into the larger part of tube B, and the oil thereby per- 5 mitted to enter the tip and escape. In oiling machinery this inward movement of the tip can be readily given by pressing it against the part being oiled. The tube being closed, except when the tip is moved inward, useless escape o and waste of oil is prevented.
For application to an ordinary can and tube the tip may be fitted to a short section of tubing of tapering form, for application to the end of the usual tube.
- Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the tube B, provided with a shoulder at its outer end and a cross- 5o pin, 6, below said shoulder, of the tip 0, provided with a flanged cap I) and orifices c, and the spring (I, fitted in the tube between the lower end of the said tube and the pin, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The foregoing specification of my improvement in oil-can tips signed by me this 25th day of April, 1881.
N. B. DENNYS.
