Description

CQ E. 0 0 D.

Patented Dec.24,1872`.
vCHARLES B. "WOOD, OF MANSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND JESSE W. SMITH, OF SAME PLACE.
:wieaoveiaewr ne enses.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lld?, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. Woon, of Mansfield, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Oiler for Machinery, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had -to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my iinproved oiler, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of the same.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of the bottom of the oil-receptacle, which is made conical, and is provided with an opening for the admission ot' air, which is automatically closed by a valve to prevent the escape ofthe oil when the oiler is set on its bottom, a secondary or lower bottom with an aperture for the admission of air being also provided to still further guard against the escape ofthe oil.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand anduse my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A represents the oilreceptacle, the upper portion b of which is oi' conical form, and has screwed into it the lower'end of the discharge pipe or nozzle B,
which is provided with a small dischargeopening, c, at its upper end. Across the interior of the portion b is secured a small strip or brace, d, to which is attached a vertical rod or wire, c, which passes up through the nozzle B, and when the latter is screwed down tight the tapering extremity of the rod c projects through the opening c and entirely closes-it.
When, however, the nozzle is raised by parically oil a certain portion ct' a machine; or a steady stream may be allowed to escape from the oriiice c by sufficiently unscrewing the pipe B. l
f is au elastic packing-ring, which is fitted over the upper end of the conical portion b of the oiler, and is forced down thereon by the contact of the iiange at the lower end of the discharge-pipe. This ring prevents lealiage of the oil, and also steadies the dischargepipe when partially unscrewed. The bottom got the oil-chamber is made extremely conical, its upper end rising into the conical portion b. At the apex of the bottom g is a small aperture, lz, for the admission of air to the oil-chamber, and this opening is closed to prevent the escape of the oil, when the can is in the position seen in the drawing, by a valve, t', to the lower end of the stem of which is attached a conical weight, 7c, having grooves Z in its sides to admit the air to the opening 7L when the oiler is tipped up to discharge the oil.
The valve 'i thus prevents the escape of the oil when the oilchamber is illed above the level of the top of the conical bottom g. Some or" the oil might, however, adhere to the stem of the valve 1i, when the oiler is used, and run down onto the weight lo and drip therefrom. I therefore employ a secondary bottom, a, which is provided at its center with a short conical tube, m, having an opening, 5, at its top for the admission of the air. A chamber is thus formed beneath the bottom g for the reception of any oil which may drip down from above, and, as the apex of the conical tube m is directly under the center of the weight 7c, no oil can escape through the opening 5, as it will drop onto the sides of the tube m; and any oil which may collect in the lower chamber will run back into the oilchamber through the grooves in the weight k, when the oiler is inverted or tipped up for use.
The oil-chamber may be filled through the opening left by removing the discharge-pipe B,
or the oil may be introduced at the bottom oi the oiler through the pipe m. The latter might be found convenient where the oiler is set in an inverted or inclined position for the 2. Thesecondary bottom a provided with purpose of automatically oiling a cert-ain po1'V an aperture for the admission of air, in comtion of a machine. binatiou with the bottom g and valve i, subl Olm-m8 stantially as and for the purpose set forth. 'f
Witness my hand this 7th day of Septem- What I claim as my invention, and desire to Yber, A. D. 1872. secure by Letters Patent, is- CHARLES B. WOOD..
1. The conical bottom g with its weighted valve c applied to the oil-receptacle A, and In presence of operating substantially in the manner and for WM. B. BATES, the purposeA described. S'. C. LovELL.
