'Stock: is delivered through the inlet 26 while water is delivered through inlet 24 in such velocity as may be'desired'and so that in thelow'er patter the sump around the dome 20 there is a considerable turbulence thereby to insure a thorough mixing of the stock and water. The water which is admitted to the sump may be white water from a paper machine.
The mixed stock and water flow upwardly within the sump so that above the. dome there is relatively less velocity and turbulence than around the dome and adjacent the lower wall. As the mixed stock and water rise upwardly within the cylinder 28 the velocity tends to become somewhat less than at points therebelow. The mixed stock and water flow over the weir 36 into the delivery chamber which extends around the cylinder 28.
The cylinder will be raised or lowered depending upon the level of stock in the delivery chamber which for illustrative purposes is indicated'by L in Fig. 2. It is desirable that the. mixed stock and water as it flows or spills over the weir from radius providing a main portion and an outlet portion of said chamber, said lower wall provided with a sump opening and an outlet opening and disposed in the main and outlet portions of the chamber respectively, a cylindrical side wall extending downwardly from said lower wall around the sump opening therein and a lower wall secured to the lower end of said cylindrica1 side wall forming therewith a sump below said lower wall, said cylindrical wall of the sump provided with inlet means to admit water and paper stock, a hollow cylindrical gate having a lower portion within said sump and a continuous upper edge adapted for the flow of water and stock from said inlet means upwardly therethrough and over said upper edge and at all sides thereof into said the cylinder 28 does not create sufficient turbulence to create foam. The construction is such,
that it is possible for the mixed stock and water to flow uniformly at 6 from the delivery chamber with minimum turbulence and at a desired maximum velocity without the creation of foam.
The cylinder 28 may be adjusted up and down as may be desired in order to obtain the desired results. If it is desired in the broad aspects of the invention that the stock and water enter the sump at such velocity and create such turbulence as will bring about the desired mixing of the stock and water while the same flows upwardl with decreasing velocity and turbulence so that as the stock and water flowover the weir the stock is uniformly mixed and the mixed stock and water are delivered from the delivery chamber with the least turbulence consistent with the velocity desired. The weir is of considerable length thereby making it possible for a considerable flow of stock and water to take place without creating turbulence which results in foam and is objectionable. 1
It may be desired to provide dump valves in the walls 8 and I4. As shown in Fig. l valves such as 60 are pivotally connected at 62 to arms 64 of levers ,66 which pivoted at 68 to brackets 10 secured to the wall 8. An outlet member [2 is secured to said wall which has opening Hi therethrough in which valve 60 seats. By moving lever 66 upwardly the valve 60 is moved from off its seat to provide a free passageway through member 12.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of theinvention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein. i
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: a
1. A mixing box construction comprising in combination, a horizontal lower wall and a'continuous vertical side wall extending upwardly therefrom and forming therewith a chamber, said side wall at one side of the chamber arranged in the form of a portion of a circle of certain radius and at an opposite side thereof inthe form of a portion of a circle of relatively shorter chamber, and said upper edge of the gat provided with an overflow weir extending entirely therearound. p
2. A mixing box construction comprising in combination, a horizontal lower wall and a continuous vertical side wall extending upwardly therefrom and forming therewith a chamber, said side wall at one side of the chamber arranged in the form of a portion of a circle of certain radius and at an opposite side thereof in the form of'a portion of a, circle of relatively shorter radius'providing a main portion and an outlet portion of said chamber, said lower wall provided with a sump opening and an outlet opening and disposed in the main and outlet portions of the chamber respectively, a cylindrical side wall extending downwardly from said lower wall around the sump opening therein and a lower wall secured to the lower end of said cylindrical-side wall forming therewith a sump below said lower wall, said cylindrical wall of the sump provided with inlet means to admit water and paper stock, a hollow cylindrical gate having a lower portion within said sump and a continuous upper edge 7 adapted for the flow of water and stock from said inlet means upwardly therethrough and over said upper edge and at all sides thereof into said chamber, and said upper edge of the gate provided with an overflow weir extending entirelytherearound, and operating means between the'upper sides ofsaid gate and side wall for moving said gate up and down relative to said sump.
3.
