H. P. THEODORE ELECTRICALLY HEATED COMFORTABLE Filed Dec. 29, 1945 IN VEN TOR. HENRY R THEODORE ATTORNE Y.
Patented Dec. 14, 1948 UNITED;
a isa iss fl riintgy 'n Ice 11'my nEATnoooMFoRTABLn Henry P. Theodore, New YorkfN. Y1, assignor'to Bobrich Manufacturing Corp., New York, N. Y.
Application December zanegsisia l ing element wire embedded in said sheet'tol 'be l an integral part of the blanket. Considerable difficulty was experienced if the 'blanket hadto be cleaned, so as to avoid affecting the heating element wire. Besides, if a break occurred in the wire, the entire blanket was practically useless for the heating element wire was not accessible for repairs.
An object of this invention is to provide a comfortable or blanket of the character described so constructed that the heating unit may be removed entirely from the comfortable so that the blanket may be laundered or cleaned without in any way interfering with or affecting the heating units, and also so that the blanket may be used as a summer blanket.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a comfortable of the character described comprising a pair of superimposed layers stitched together at three sides to form a pocket, the fourth side being closable by slide fasteners or other releasable closure means, and a sheet detachably mounted within said pocket and carrying the heating elements and removable from the pocket when it is desired to use the comfortable without the heating means or to launder the comfortable, and also when it is desired or necessary to repair the heating unit.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a comfortable of the character described in which the sheet which carries the electric heating elements or wires is attached in flat position to the inside of the pocket by quickly releasable attaching means.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a strong, rugged and durable electrically heated comfortable of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, comfortable in use, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will be in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts which will be exemplifled in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:
"blallkell orcomfort'able, embodying the *Figf l is a partial perspective-view of a heating invention. v
Fig.2 is a top plan'view of the detachable sheet which carries the heating elements.
Referring now-"in detail to the drawingp'jlll {designates a comf ortableembodying the invention. The same-comprises a'bottom layer H "and a top layer l2 superimposed thereon. The top and bottom layers may be stitched together around three sides to form a pocket, the fourth side may be closed by slider actuated fasteners I3. The top portion l2 may be tufted or decorated so that the blanket may have the appearance and serve as an ordinary comfortable.
Within the pocket is a heating unit l5 removable, as will later appear, so that the comfortable can be used in summer as a light blanket for general use. The heating unit [5 comprises a sheet l6 of somewhat smaller dimension than the outer blanket so that it will fit thereinto in flat condition. Attached to sheet I6 is a heating element I! which may be of usual construction. The heating element may be stitched to sheet l6 and the terminals thereof form an electric cord l8 which projects through the open end of the pocket. Cord l8 may be provided with a plug 20 for attachment to any suitable outlet or electric wall socket, and there may be interposed in the electric cord l8, a switch l9 which may be a conventional on and "off switch or of the type to regulate the heat to high, medium, low, and off.
Sheet [6 may be formed adjacent the edges thereof with button holes 2|, as shown in the drawing. Stitched to the inner surface of the bottom sheet II is a strip 23. The strip 23 extends around four sides and is formed to underlie the button holes 2 I. Stitched to the strip 23 are buttons 24 adapted to be received within the button holes 2|.
It will now be understood that the blanket can be turned inside out and the unit l5 attached thereto. Then the blanket may be turned again so that the heating unit will be disposed within the pocket. In the spring or summer the heating unit 15 may be removed so that the blanket will be light and the heating element sheet may be neatly folded and stored for future use.
Obviously, the buttons 24 and button holes 2| may be replaced by snap fasteners or other quickly detachable fasteners. It will also be understood that if desired, a thermostat may be introduced in the electric circuit to control the maximum heat at which the heating element is permitted to operate.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to met the conditions oi practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the-embodiments above set forth. it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A comfortable comprising a bottom layer, a top layer superimposed thereover and forming a pocket therewith, a heating unit comprising a sheet disposed within said pocket, means for dehchably attaching said sheet to one of said imam, and an electric heating element attached to said sheet.
2. An electrically heated comfortable comprising a bottom layer, annmzer layer superimposed thereon and attached thereto at three: sides thereby forming a pocket having an open end, slider actuated means for closing the open end of 4 said pocket, a strip within said pocket stitched to the lower layer and provided with buttons, a sheet within said pocket provided with button holes to receive said buttons, and an electric heating element attached to said sheet.
3. An electrically heated comfortable comprising top and bottom superimposed layers stitched together to form a pocket having an opening, a strip stitched to the lower layer and disposed within said pocket, said strip forming a frame, a sheet within said pocket overlying said lower layer, detachable fastener means for attaching said sheet to said strip, and an electric heating element stitched to said sheet.
