' 6 Claims. (Cl. -331 This invention relates to an attachable guard which may be mounted upon the side fence of a crib for temporary extension of its height. It frequently occurs that the infant climbs over said side fence and falls out of the crib, and it is the principal object of the invention to prevent such accidents and provide an improved guard for this purpose which is conveniently and economically manufacturable, saleable at low cost, strong, durable, conveniently transportable, conveniently mountable upon and demountable from the crib, dependable, efficient, and well appearing.
It also occurs frequently that where a child is required to sleep in a bed rather than a crib' -guard l is no longer required it may be readily tion thereof being shown broken away for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the guard shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional elevational view, in a still further enlarged scale, illustrating a detail of the invention.
Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a bed with a guard therefor, which is a modification of the invention.
The guard I, Figs. 2, 3, includes a pair of extension plates 2 of any suitable material, held to each other by upper bolts 3 and similar lower bolts 3a, and by a bar 4 having longitudinal parallel channels 5 in which are frictionally insertible the top rim portions 2a of the plates 2. To mount the guard l upon the side fence 6 of crib I, Fig. 1, for its elevational extension, the plates 2 are first joined to each other by passing the bolts 3 throughthe holes 8 thereof as shown in Fig. 4, thrn the joined plates are placed upon the fence with the top rail 9 thereof between them and the bolts 3 seated thereupon, as shown in Fig. 3, then the bolts (to are passed through the holes 8a and all of the bolts 3, 3a are tightened to firmly secure the plates 2 to the rail 9, and then the bar 4 is slipped over the rims 2a of the plates, whereupon the fence becomes fully heightened to prevent the infant from climbing over it. When the demounted from the fence 6 by directly reversing all of the aforesaid steps. Each of the bolts 3, 30, Fig. 4, comprises a screw I 0 threadable into a pair of tapped sockets l I which bear against the plates 2, and a pair of screws I! which penetrate the holes 8 or 8a and thread into the sockets H..
According to the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the guard l3 thereof is similar in all practical respects to the guard I, but its mounting and demounting bolts 3, 3a are spaced sufliciently apart so as to provide registry between them of the usual rail ll of the bed l5, and the plates 2 are of sumcient height to prevent the child from accidentally falling out of the bed during sleep.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. An attachable and detachable crib guard for extending the height of its side fence comprising a pair of plates adapted to embrace the top rail of said fence, bolts penetrating said plates above and below said rail for securing said plates to each other in compressment of said rail to maintain the plates in extension above the rail, and a bar engaging the upper portions of said plates and supported thereby.
2. An attachable and detachable bed guard comprising a pair of plates adapted to embrace the bed rail, bolts penetrating said plates above and below said rail for securing said plates to.
each other in compressment of said rail to maintain the plates in extension above the rail, and a bar having a pair of longitudinal channels in its underside for demountably attaching it to the rims of said plates through insertion of the rims in said channels to secure the top portions of said plates to each other.
3. An attachable and detachable crib guard for extending the height of its side fence comprising a pair of plates adapted to embrace the top rail of said fence, bolts penetrating said plates above and below said rail for securing said plates to each other in compressment of said rail to maintain the plates in extension above the rail, and each of said bolts comprising a pair of tapped sockets placeable against the inner sides of said plates, a screw threadable in both of said sockets, and a pair of screws penetrating said plates threading into said sockets.
4. An attachable and detachable bed guard comprising a pair of plates adapted to embrace for extending the height the bed rail, bolts penetrating said plates above and below said rail for securing said plates to each other in compressment of said rail to maintain the plates in extension above the rail, and each of said bolts comprising a pair of tapped sockets placeable against the inner side of said plates, a screw threadable in both of said sockets, and a pair of screws penetrating said plates threading into said sockets.
5. An attachable and detachable crib guard of its side fence comprising a pair of plates adapted to embrace the top rail of said fence, bolts penetrating said plates above and below said rail for securing said plates to each other in compressment of said rail to maintain the plates in extension above the rail, and an elongated bar engaging upper portions of said plates and supported thereby above the said top rail of said crib fence in the path of movement thereover.
