This invent on relates to a fastening adapted to be secured to vertical supporting surfaces such as walls and to provide a hanger or support for pictures, mirrors or other similar articles which are normally suspended by a loose wire attached at its ends to the article and having an intermediate portion for engagement with the supportingfastening.

More part cularly, it is a primary object of the present invention to provide an anchor fastening which will effectively function to prevent the supporting wire of a picture, mirror or similar article from slipping relatively to the fastening after the mirror or picture has once been leveled.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide an anchor fastening of extremely simple construction which Will be durable and eflicient for its intended purpose, which can be readily secured to a vertical supporting surface and which will be ornamental in appearance.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide an anchor fastening of a construction adapting it for production in various sizes for use with mirrors, pictures or similar articles of different sizes and weights.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a, preferred embodiment of the device, and wherein:

Referring more specifically to the drawing, the anchor fastening constituting the invention, is designated generally 3, and shown enlarged with respect to its actual size to more clearly illustrate the construction thereof.

The anchor fastening 3 includes an elongated strip of metal 4 including a substantially straight flat intermediate portion 5 and turned back ends. The upper turned back end includes a portion 6 which is folded back against the upper end of the intermediate portion 5. Said upper end portion 6 terminates in a turned back. upwardly and outwardly extending portion 1 which is disposed at an acute angle to the portion 6 and which combines therewith to form substantially a V the legs of which are joined by a rounded bight or intermediate portion 8. The intermediate portion 5 of the metallic strip 4 terminates at its lower end in a turned back portion having a lower part l3 which extends from the lower end of the intermediate portion 5 upwardly and outwardly with respect thereto, an intermediate part M which is spaced outwardly from and disposed substantially parallel to the intermediate portion 5. an upper end portion [5 which extends inwardly and upwardly toward the portion 5 and which terminates beneath and adiacent the bight portion 8 in a turned back terminal portion l6 which bears against the intermediate portion 5.

The portions 5 and l5 are provided with openings l1 and I9 for receiving a driven fastening I9 and as clearly illustrated in Figure 2, the opening I! is disposed substantially below the level of the opening l8 so that the fastening I9 will extend inwardly and downwardly with respect to the strip 4.

The fastening l9 may be of any suitable length and is adapted to be driven into a surface 29 against which the intermediate bar portion 5 is disposed for securing the anchor fastening 3 thereto and with the longitudinal axis of the member 4 disposed substantially in a vertical plane. The screw ll is then backed off to space the shank end thereof a considerable distance from the bight portion 8 and a portion of a length of picture wire or the like, designated 2 I, is passed downwardly through the passage l2 and between the turned back portion 6 and the screw l l to engage in the bight portion 8. The ends of the picture wire l2 may be secured to spaced portions of a picture frame, mirror or similar article, not shown, in a conventional manner. With the screw ll backed off, the picture wire 2| may be slid through the bight portion 8 for leveling the article to be suspended on the vertical surface 20, in a conventional manner. The screw II is then advanced until the shank end thereof clamps a portion of the picture wire 2! between said shank end and the bight "portion 8, thereby to retain the picture wire 2| fixedly disposed relatively to the anchor fastening 3 and so that the mirror, picture or other article supported by the wire 2| will be effectively maintained in its leveled position.

It will be readily apparent that the anchor fastening 3 may be made in Various sizes depending upon the size and Weight of the picture, mirror or other articles to be supported thereby and the strip 4 thereof may be formed of an suitable metal or other material adaptable for the purpose.

Various other modifications and changes are likewise contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departin from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. An anchor fastening for hanging pictures, mirrors or the like on a supporting surface comprising a body member adapted to be secured against an upright supporting surface and including a substantially V-shaped portion disposed to open upwardly and having a lower, bight portion adapted to receive and engage a portion of a length of picture wire or the like adapted to be attached at its ends to a mirror, picture or similar article to be supported, and means carried by said body member and disposed to be advanced or retracted relatively to the inner side of said bight portion for engaging and clamping the wire, when in an advanced position, to prevent said wire from sliding relatively to the bight portion.

2. A picture supporting hook of the character described comprising a body member, adapted to be detachably secured to an upright supporting 1 surface, having an upwardly opening hook portion adapted to be engaged by a wire or similar member attached to a picture, mirror or the like to be suspended therefrom, and retractable means carried by said hook portion and disposed when in an advanced position to cooperate with the hook portion for clamping said wire relatively thereto.

A device as in claim 2, said hook portion being substantially V-shaped to form a bight portion adapted to be engaged by the wire, one leg of said V-shaped hook having an inturned terminai portion partially closing the open, enlarged end of the V -shaped hook, and said clamping means comprising a, screw extending threadedly through said inturned portion and having its shank end disposed adjacent the inner side of the bight portion.

4. A device as in claim 2, said hook portion being substantially V-shaped to form a bight portion adapted to be engaged by the wire, one leg of said V-shaped hook having an inturned terminal portion partially closing the open, enlarged end of the V-shaped hook, and said clamping means comprising a screw extending threadedly through said inturned portion and having its shank end disposed adjacent the inner side of the bight portion, the opposite end of said body member including a turned back portion having an outwardly off-set intermediate part and inclined end portions, and a driven fastening extendin slidably through said intermediate part and through a portion of the body member disposed against the supporting surface and adapted to be driven into the supporting surface for anchoring the body member thereto.
