2 Claims.

The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in chimney or flue caps designed to prevent the entrance of rain into the chimney as well as to function as a spark arrester and without interfering with the draft of the chimney.

An object of this invention is to provide a de vice of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and install in operative position and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the cap in position on a chimney.

Figure 2 is a top plan view.

Figures 3 and 4 are side elevational views showing opposite sides of the cap.

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2, and

Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed the preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 designates the chimney cap generally which is of generally box-like construction and including right angle side walls 6 and open at its top and bottom for seating on the upper end of a chimney 1.

A flange 611 projects inwardly at the lower edge of three of the walls for resting on top of the chimney and cemented thereto, while the remaining wall of the cap designated at 61) is spaced outwardly from its adjacent side of the chimney.

A vertical partition 9 extends upwardly from the lower edge of the cap in spaced relation from the wall 6b to form a vertical draft passage 8, the partition 9 and three of the walls of the cap thus forming a chimney extension.

A baflie I is attached at one edge to the upper portion of the partition 9 and extends upwardly in an inclined position in spaced overlying relation with the top of the chimney, the side edges of the bafile l0 being supported by angle iron brackets ll secured to the wall 6 of the cap.

The upper edge of the baffle I0 is spaced from a well 6 at the side of the cap opposite from the passage 8.

The top of the cap is partly closed by a sliding cover 12 which partly overlies the upper edge of the bafile I0 and spaced above the latter, the cover I2 thus being positioned on the cap at a side thereof opposite from the passage 8. The cover may be slidably adjusted outwardly from the righthand side of the cap from' the position shown in Figures 1, 2 and 5, and three of the edges of the cover are formed with downwardly extending flanges lZa which telescope over the cap 5 and with the two opposed flanges at all times in tight fitting frictional engagement with the cap to prevent removal of the cover by strong winds.

Accordingly, smoke rising from the top of the chimney 1 will be deflected by the baffle Ill to a side of the cap provided with the cover I2 and the cover l2 then deflects the smoke toward an opposite side of the cap which is unobstructed at its side provided with the passage 8 to thus provide an opening in the top of the cap for the escape of the smoke.

The balile l0 and the cover l2 thus cooperate to completely cover the top of the chimney to prevent the entrance of rain into the chimney and the baflie l0 and the cover l2 also function as a spark arrester.

The passage 8 produces a draft in the cap to facilitate the passage of the smoke therethrough and thus prevent pocketing of the smoke in the cap.

The cover I2 is slidably mounted on the upper edge of the cap and may be adjusted to regulate the size of the opening l3.

It is believed that the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. A chimney cap comprising a box-like structure open at its top and bottom and adapted for attaching to the top of a chimney, one wall of the cap being spaced outwardly from an adjacent side of the chimney, a relatively short vertical partition in the cap in spaced relation from said one wall to form a vertical draft passage in the cap, a baiile extending from the upper edge of said partition and partly overlying the top of the chimney and a fragmental top for the cap and partly overlying the bafiie in spaced relation therefrom, said baffle and fragmentary top forming a tortuous passage for flue gases rising in the chimney. v

2. A chimney cap comprising a box-like structure open at its top and bottom and adapted for resting in an upright position on top of a chimney with one side of the cap projecting beyond an adjacent side of the chimney to provide a vertical draft passage in the cap, a vertical baffle in the cap in spaced relation from said one side of the cap and rising in the vertical plane of said adjacent side of the chimney, said baffle including an upwardly inclined extension partly overlying the chimney, and a cover slidably mounted on the top of the cap for lateral adjustment l0 thereon and partly overlying the bafile.
