Description

Oct. 26, 1948. HER 20G FLOWERPOT HOLDER Filed July 19, 1946 Patented Oct. 26, 194s j amazes FLOWERPOT HOLDER f I other f Herman Herzog, Detroit, Mich. Application July 19, 1946, Serial No. 684,923
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a holder for flower pots or similar articles, and has for its object to provide a device which may be readily attached to and utilized with slidable window sashes by making use of the looped handle, usually provided on such sashes for the raising or lowering thereof, as a means for effecting the attachment and positioning of the flower pot holder on the said sash.
A further object is to provide such a device which will not interfere with the opening and closing movement-s of the sash, and which will permit the holder and the article which it may support to remain in position on the sash in its various opened or closed positions.
More particularly, the said invention contemplates the provision on a tray or similar holder of a clip designed to enter and engage in the lifting handle of a window sash and adapted to support the said tray or holder in such position throughout opening and closing movements of said sash.
Still further objects or advantages additional or subsidiary to the aforesaid objects, or resulting from the construction or operation of the invention as it is carried into efiect, will become apparent as the said invention is hereinafter further disclosed.
In carrying the said invention into effect, I may adopt the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, by way of example, having reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a flower pot holder embodying the said invention;
Figure 2 is a plan of underside of the same;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the lower Part of a window sash showing the said flower pot holder attached to the lifting handle of the sash; and
Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure 3, illustrating a modified form of the device.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several figures of the drawing.
I indicates the lower horizontal frame member of a window sash provided with a horizontally looped lifting handle II which in the present example is provided with a base plate I2.
I3 indicates a tray or holder for supporting a flower pot, or other article, the said tray being provided on its underside with a forwardly projecting member I4, the outer end of which is bent downwardly as at I5; and slidably mounted under the said member I4, as by means of pins l5 and slots I1, is a clip or latch member I8 biassed from the member I5 by a compression spring I9 as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3.
The operation of the device will be clearly apparent from Figure 3 which shows that, in applying the holder to the sash of a window, the members I5 and I8 are simply passed downwardly within the loop of the handle II, the spring I9 being compressed so that it urges the said members I5 and I8 apart to a degree which ensures a firm engagement within the loop of the handle, as will be quite obvious. The latch or clip I8 may have a portion bent or offset outwardly, as at 20, to lock beneath the handle and resist its unintentional withdrawal therefrom, it being understood that the shape of the clip will naturally be gov erned by the requirements of its easy insertion into the handle and resistance to its withdrawal therefrom. The member I5 operates as a brace against the surface of the plate I2 of the handle, or against the surface of the sash where this plate is not present as in some of. the well-known types of several lifting handles.
As illustrated in Figure l, a clip or latch 2I, corresponding to the clip [8 hereinbefore referred to, may be fixedly attached to the member l4 where spring quality in the material of the clip 2i is sufl'icient to serve the purposes and where variations in the inner spacing of sash handles with which it is to be used is not very great.
I prefer to give the member I4 a slight ofiset above the clip I8, as will be recognized in the drawing, in order to overcome any tendency which the tray may have to tip downwardly to an undesirable extent When in position and loaded with a flower pot.
The arrangement described provides a very convenient and desirable way of displaying plants in the window of a house without crowding the window sill or interfering with the opening and closing of the sash; and when the sash is raised the flower pot is accordingly raised therewith and maintains its display position with regard to the window pane.
The invention may be developed within the scope of the following claims without departing from the essential features of the said invention, and it is desired that the specification and drawing be read as being merely illustrative of a practical embodiment of the same and not in a strictly limiting sense.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the type described, for attachment to the looped handle of an upwardly slidable window sash, a tray, a forwardly projecting arm on said tray having its end portion bent downwardly, and a downwardly extending resiliently mounted clip in spaced relation to said downwardly bent portion of said arm, whereby said bent portion and said clip are mutually and detachably insertable within the looped handle of a window sash for the purposes specified.
2. In a device of the type described, a. tray, a forwardly projecting arm on said tray having its end portion bent downwardly, a downwardly extending slid'able clip in spaced relation to said downwardly bent portion of said arm for detachable engagement within the looped handle of a window sash, and a spring interposed between 4 said downwardly bent arm and said clip to maintain said clip in such engagement.
