This invention relatesv to cutter chains. and more particularly to an improved chain block. and bit. holder construction for a cutter chain especially designed for use in the cutting of coal or the like.
Ano'bject of the present invention is to provide an improved cutter chain. Another object is to provide an. improved. chain block. and bit holder construction for a cutter chain. A further object is. to provide :a chain block lug. of an improved design. A still further object is toprovide an improved bit holder having a biiu-rcated. shank whereby the holder straddles the block lug in .a novel manner. Yetanother object is to provide improved means for securing a bit holder in hit clamping position. on a chain block lug. Other objects. and advantages of the-invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.

In the illustrative embodiment disclosed herein, a chain block is designated l, strap links 2 and pivot pins 3, the latter pivotally connecting the links and blocks together in a. well known manner.
The improved chain block I has. a lateral lu 4 provided with vertical guiding grooves .5, .5 at its opposite sides, and a horizontal. plane upper surface 6 disposed at right angles to the grooves, and the latter extending upwardly through the sidesof the plane upper surface as shown in Fig. 5. At the front of the plane upper surface is an upstanding abutment 1 providing .a rearwardly facing, outwardly and forwardly inclined, front surface 8. At the rear of the plane upper surface is an upstanding abutment ,9 providing ,a transverse, forwardly facing, vertical surface 10. The holder straddles the block lug i with the rear head surface engaging the surface Ill and the bifurcated shank portion M has parallel side portions l6, I6 received and guided in the vertical side grooves 5 of the block lug. A cross membenpreferably in the. form of a cross pin I l, is secured to the holder side port-ions and passes through the Vertical slot. This cross pin is preferably headed over at E8 within recesses 19 at the outer sides of the side portions Id of the holder shank. This cross pin is preferably flattened at 20. Threaded within .the downwardly inclined opening 2! in the block lug it at the forward side of the block is a set screw 2.2 which is engageable at its inner end with the flattened surface 20 on the cross pin. The cross pin also serves to prevent displacement of the holder from the lug grooves in the event the set screw becomes loose and the bit is lost.
The cutter bit is generally designated 23 and is of a conventional double-pointed, reversible type comprising a body 2% of generally triangular shape in sideelevation. The bit body has lying in.

cutter bit is positioned on the block with its inner inactive cutting face resting on the plane upper surface 6 of the block lug, and the inner portion of the active cutting face of the bit rests against the inclined surface 8. The holder socket receives the bit and. is shaped to conformto the upper portion of the bit body in the manner shown in Fig. 2.

and the set screw 22 isv adjusted inwardly in the threaded block opening 2|, the inner end of the set screw acts against the cross pin ll to slide the side portions M of the holder rectilinearly inwardly in the side grooves 5 of the block lug to clamp firmly the cutter bit against the lug sure.

When the set screw is adjusted outwardly the holder is loosened so that it can be moved outwardly a distance sufiicient to permit I removal-of thetcutter bit ,fr-om the holderhead socket, thereby to permit reversal of the cutter bit in the socket. Thereafter, the set screw may again be adjusted inwardly to clamp the cutter bit in cutting position on the block with a new cutting point presented to the work.
As a result of this invention, it will be noted that an improved cutter chain is provided embodying an improved chain block and bit holder construction whereby a cutter bit may be clamped firmly in cutting position on the chain block in an improved manner. By the provision ofthe bifurcated holder shank and vertical side grooves on the block lug, togetherwith the improved manner of adjusting the holder rectilinearly into bit clamping position, the cutter bit is clamped firmly on the block lug in an extremely effective manner. By the provision of the improved construction disclosed ruggedness and simplicity are attained. Other uses and advantages of the improved cutter chain will be clearly apparent tothose skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specifically described one form which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cutter chain, a chain block having a lateral lug, said lug having vertical grooves at its opposite sides and a plane upper surface disposed at right angles to said grooves, a holder straddling said lug and having a socket adapted to receive a cutter bit and parallel side portions received in said grooves, said plane upper lug surface providing a seat for the inner end of the bit, said lug being transversely slotted between said side grooves near the lower ends of the latter, a cross pin secured to said side portions and passing through the slot, and means on said block and engaging said cross pin for sliding said side portions inwardly in said grooves to clamp the bit against said plane upper surface.
2. In a cutter chain, a chain blockhaving a lateral lug, said lug having vertical grooves at its opposite sides and a plane upper surface disposed at right angles to said grooves, said lug also having an outwardly inclined front surface in ad- Vance of said plane upper surface, a holder straddling said lug and having a socket adapted to receive a cutter bit and parallel side portions received in said grooves, the inner portion of the bit seating against said plane upper surface and the forward portion of the bit resting against said inclined front surface, said lug being transversely slotted between said side grooves near the lower ends of the latter, a cross pin secured to said side portions and passing through the slot, and a set screw threaded in an opening in said lug and engaging said cross pin for sliding said side portions inwardly in said side grooves to clamp the cutter bit against said lug surfaces.
'3. In a cutter chain, a chain block having grooves at its opposite sides extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the block, said grooves providing a narrow central portion and end enlargements at the opposite sides of the grooves, said narrow portion being traversed by an opening near the inner ends of the grooves, a holder straddling said narrow portion and having a head and a bifurcated shank, said head having a socket adapted to receive a cutter bit,
and the parallel side portions of said shank received in said grooves, said holder having a cross connecting portion passing through said opening and secured to said shank side portions near their inner ends, and a set screw on said block engaging at its inner end said cross connecting portion for adjusting said holder in said grooves to clamp the cutter bit in cutting position on the block.
4. In a cutter chain, a chain block having a lateral lug, said lug having grooves at its opposite sides extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the block, and a plane outer surface disposed longitudinally of the block at right angles to said grooves, a holder straddling said lug and having a socket adapted to receive a cutter bit and parallel side portions received in said groove, said plane outer lug surface providing a seat for the inner end of the bit, said lug being transversely slotted between said side grooves near the inner ends of the latter, a cross connecting portion passing through said slot'and rigidly secured to said holder side portions, and adjustable means on said block and lying in the central longitudinalvertical plane of connecting portion for moving said holder side portions inwardly in said grooves to clamp the bit against said plane outer surface.
5. In a cutter chain, a chain block having a lateral lug, said lug having grooves at its opposite sides extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the block, and a plane outersurface disposed longitudinally of the block at right angles to said grooves, saidlug also having an outwardly inclined front surface in advance of said plane outer surface, a holder straddling said lug and having a socket adapted to receive a cutter bit and parallel side portions received in said grooves, the inner portion of the bit seating against said plane outer surface and the forward portion of the bit resting against said inclined front surface, said lug being transversely apertured between said side grooves near the inner ends ofthe latter, a cross connecting portion passing through the aperture and rigidly secured to said holder side portions, and a set screw threaded in an opening in said lug and disposed withits axis of rotation lying in the central longitudinal plane of the block, said set screw at its inner end engaging said ceiving a cutter bit, the rear surface of said head located rearwardly of said shank and having sliding contact with said plane abutment surface, a pin and slot connection between said holder shank and said lug for limiting movement of said holder relative to said lug, said connection per-,
manently maintaining the rear surface of said head in sliding contact with said abutment surface in all positions of said holder relative to said lug, and adjustable means arranged on said block longitudinally thereof and engaging the pin of said connection intermediate said shank side portions for adjusting said holder into bit holding position relative to said lug.
7. A chain block having a base portion formed with spaced parallel pivot receiving bores and a lug extending laterally from said base portion,
the latter, said means abutting said cross said lateral lug having grooves at its opposite sides extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the block intermediate the ends of the lug to provide a narrow longitudinal central portion between the grooves and enlarged end portions at the opposite sides of said grooves, and said lug having a plane outer surface extending longitudinally of the block at right angles to the bottoms of the grooves to provide a seat for a cutter bit, the narrow longitudinal portion of said lug having an elongated slot extending transversely therethrough between said grooves in parallelism therewith near the inner ends of the latter, and a bit holder straddling the narrow longitudinal portion of said lug and having a bit receiving head and a bifurcated shank, the parallel side portions of said shank received in said having a transverse connectangles to said side portions and extending through said slot between said shank side portions, and adjustable means on said block with its longitudinal axis lying in the central longitudinal plane of the block and at right angles to said transverse portion and upon inward adjustment thereof relative to said block and holder engaging said transverse portion for side portions in said grooves to adjust said holder into bit clamping position against said seat.
8. In a cutter chain, a chain block having a lateral lug provided with grooves at its opposite sides and having therethrough, connecting said grooves, a transverse opening, a bit holder guided on and straddling said lug for clamping a cutter bit in cutting position on the block and having parallel side the opposite sides of said ment thereof having its inner end engageable with said transverse portion substantially mid way between said side portions of said holder to exert a bit clamping force thereon.
9. In a cutter chain, a chain block having a lateral lug provided with grooves at its opposite sides and having extending through the same and connecting said grooves a transverse opening, a bit holder guided on and straddling said lug for clamping a cutter bit in cutting position on the block and having parallel side portions at the opposite sides of the lug received in said grooves and held by the walls of the latter against movement in either direction longitudinally of said block, said bit holder further having a transverse portion extending through said opening at right angles to said side portions and secured to the latter for connecting the latter in rigid parallel relation, and a set screw threaded in an opening in the block lug for adjusting said holder into bit holding position with respect to said block, said set screw arranged with its axis of rotation lying in the central longitudinal plane of said block at right angles to said transverse portion and having its inner end projecting between said holder side portions into said transverse opening, and said screw upon inward adjustment thereof engaging with its inner end said transverse holder portion substantially midway between said side portions of said holder, to exert a bit clamping force thereon.
