Application October 25, 1946, Serial N0.'705,'622
This invention re'latesto agar-merit and collar The majority of mens present-day shirts have -a collar which is permanentlyattached to the neck portion of the shirt.
I It is well known that collars become frayed-morerapidly'and wear out 'sooner'than the rest of the shirt 'so that the shirt must be discarded long before the body portion and sleeves are worn out, involving "a considerable expense in replacement of shirts for the indi- Also-by reversing the collar when it'b'eperiods without laundering.
It isa principal'object'of thepresent invention toprovide ashirt having a neck'band adapted to receive adetacha'ble collar, which collar may be easily'and quickly attached to and'detached from *the neck band so that when one side becomes soiled, the *colla'r'may'be reversedandthewearer wear for the shirts after the collars have become worn out.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide-a neck band for the shirt having fastening-devices adapted-to-engage the collar to hold the-sameon-the neck band; to provide means in the band of the collar for stiffening the ends thereof to provide proper shape of the collar when it is attached to the neck band of the shirt; to provide a stiffener for the band of the collar; to provide pockets in the ends of the neck band of the shirt for receiving the stiffened portion of the band of the collar; and to provide a device of this character simple and economical to manufacture.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a shirt showing the collar attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the neck band of the shirt and showing the collar in disassembled relation thereto and showing the fastening devices.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View through the neck band of the shirt and collar shown in assembled relation.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevational view of the 5 Claims. (01. l2'139) :2 stiffening means shown inserted in the pocket of -the-neck band, I
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the stiffener for the band of the collar.
Referring more in -detail to the drawings:
-I designates a shirt embodying the features of my invention comprising a shoulder :portion 2, peak band 3 and a "detachable collar 4.
The neck band 3 comprises two layers :of fabi ic forming sides 5 and 6 having their lower -.1edges -l and 1 turned up forming a hem and engaging "the respective sides of the neck portion 8 which forms an opening in the shoulder portion 2 of theshirt. The =sides 5 and I5 of the neck band are stitched "or otherwise suitably secured to the neck -portion 8 and the -endi9 of the neck band provided with the usual button I 0 and the opposite end II of the neck band has a buttonhole I 2 for fastening the neck 'band of the shirt. The respective edges of the pieces-of fabric andt 'are hemmed andthe ends =9 and -'-I-I of the neck band'are sewed together at a point as indicated bystitching at I3 and 14 at the respective ends thereof, the distance between the stitching -I-3 and I4 being left-open to form a pocket I5 for "the reception of the band I6 of the collar 4 as will later be described.
Snap fasteners H are provided in the pocket "of the neckband ofthe shirt, the male member of the fastener beingsecured to the:side6"an'd "the female part-of the fastener being fastened to the side 5 of the neck band in mating relation to each other.
The band I6 of the collar is provided with openings E8 so arranged that they will align with the fastening devices I1 and the shanks I9 of the fasteners will engage in such openings when the collar is attached to the neck band of the shirt. The collar is made up of double pieces of fabric as is the usual practice and the ends of the band I6 extend outwardly from the collar portion 20 as indicated at 2I and 22 (Fig. 2). The collar is adapted to be turned down over the neck band of the shirt as indicated at 23 (Fig. 3) when the collar is attached to the neck band as will later be described.
Spaced from the ends 2| and 22 of the band I6 are openings 24 and 25 adapted to receive a stiffener 2B for the ends of the band It of the collar portion. The stiffener may be made of any suitable material, such as Celluloid, plastic or the like. The openings 24 and 25 are closely adjacent the outer openings in the band I6 so that when the stiffener is inserted in its place and the band I6 is inserted in the pocket I5 of the neck band of the shirt and the fastening devices fastened together, the outer fasteners will retain the stiffening member 26 in place. The collar band is stitched as indicated at 21 and 28 so that the ends 2| and 22 will form pockets as indicated at 29 (Fig. 4) for the ends 2| and 22 of the collar band l6.
Assembly of the collar and shirt combination as above described is as follows:
With the fastening devices I"! disassembled the pocket l5 will be open and the band l6 having the stiffening members 26 inserted in the pockets in the respective ends of the neck band of the shirt provided by the stitching as indicated at 13 and [4, the shanks l9 of the fastening devices may be inserted through the openings [8 in the band [6 and the fastening devices fastened together to retain the collar therein. After insertion of the button [0 in the buttonhole l2 of the neck band of the shirt to hold the collar together and turning the collar down as indicated in Fig. 1, the collar and shirt is in wearing position.
.When the outside of the collar becomes soiled,
the collar may be reversed by unbuttoning the button It! and releasing the snap fasteners, removing the collar band It from the Docket, reversing the collar end-to-end, again inserting it in the pocket as above described, and turning the collar down over the neck band as illustrated in Fig. 3, so that it is again ready for use.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved removable and reversible collar combination for a shirt having a stiffening device in the ends of the collar band adapted to be inserted in pockets in the neck band for holding the collar in the proper position while in use.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with the neck band of a shirt having a pocket, a reversible collar having a band adapted to engage in said pocket and a collar portion, said band having portions extending beyond the collar portion, means in said pocket for engaging said collar band for retaining said collar on said shirt, and pockets in the respective ends of the neck band of the shirt for receiving the ends of the collar band for supporting said bands.
2. In combination with the neck band of a shirt having a pocket and fastening devices in said pocket, a collar having a band adapted to engage in said neck band pocket and a reversible turneddown portion, said band having its respective ends extending outwardly from the turned-down portion, means in said collar band adapted to engage said fastening devices in said shirt band for re taining said collar on said shirt, and stiffening means in the outwardly extending ends of said collar band adapted to engage in the respective ends of the neck band of the shirt. 4 3. In combination with a neck band of a shirt having a pocket, a collar having a band and a reversible turned down portion, said band having its respective ends extending outwardly from the turned down portion and provided with pockets, stifieners adapted to engage in said pockets, means in said neck band for retaining the collar bandtherein, and pockets in the respective ends of said neck band for receiving the stiifeners for retaining the respective ends of the collar band therein.
4. In combination with a neck band of a shirt having a pocket, a collar having a band and a reversible turned down portion, said band having its respective ends extending outwardly from the turned down portion and provided with pockets, stifieners adapted to engage in said pockets, means in said neck band for retaining the collar band therein, and means in the respective ends of said neck band for receiving the ends of the collar band.
5. In combination with a neck band of a shirt having a pocket, a collar having a band and a reversible turned down portion, said band having its respective ends extending outwardly from the turned down portion and provided with pockets, stifieners adapted to engage in said pockets, and means in said neck band for retaining the collar band therein, the respective ends of said neck band being stitched to form pockets for receiving the respective ends of the collar band.
