TOOTH POWDER BOX. No. 245,051. Patented Aug. 2,1881.
I 1 H la a 3 J2 h zwez ez I l I ja qflmioz J L e J9 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BELL, OF sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOOTH-POWDER Box.-
srncrmcsrrolv forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,051, dated August 2, 1881.
' Application filed my 21, 1am. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, and State.of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth-Powder Boxes; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My'invention consists in the construction combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section on line a a, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a verti- 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isavera: a, Fig. 1.
In the annexed drawings, theletter A represents a tooth-powder box of any desired shape and construction, and provided with a removable lid or cover. This tooth-powder w box is formed with a central, or nearly so, transverse partition, B, for the the box into two compartments or chambers, C D. This partition is attached rigidly tothesupported upon legs or by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) so as to be readily purpose of dividing inside of the casing of the box; or it may be brackets a, (indicated removable from the box.
The upper chamber, 0, of the box contains the tooth-power to be used, and the lower one constitutes the chamber for supplying the tooth-brush with the tooth-powder in suflicient quantities. This partition or central transverse wall, B, is formed on its under side with a slide, E, having at its inner end a vertical wall, E, against which a spiral spring, L, works,
to keep the slide in a normal condition for ac tion. The upper wall of this slide is formed preferably with two holes to register with two partition 13. This correspondingly-shaped holes in the transverse slide is also formed-with guides or stops d, which work through the apand-facilitate its falling ertures in the partition, and also serve to re- --tain the slide in contact with the partition.
This particular way of holding the slide in place by fastening apiece of wire, a, (see Fig. 3,) on the pieces d that project through the holes in the upper part of the box, causes less friction than in any other way, the pieces of the slide projecting through the holes into the box sufliciently-high to stir the powder loose on the brush in the receptacle below.
The lower portion of the tooth-powder case (see Fig. 1) is formed with a vertical opening, H, of the shape of a tooth-brush, hich is arranged on the same line with the slide, so as to operate in conjunction therewith.
Operation: The upper chamber of the box being filled with tooth-powder, the tooth-brush, with the bristles upward, is inserted in the vertical opening H, located in the wall of the lower chamber and fitted within the sliding, receptacle E. Bybeing pushed forward the brush causes the slide E to advance or recede, which movement causes the openings in the slide and partitions to register, thus permitting the tooth-powder to fall on the brush in the chamber below in suificient quantities, and when the brush is withdrawn with its supply of tooth-powder the spring will force the sliding receptacle backward, closing the openings or passages and cutting off the flow of toothpowder.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a tooth-powder box having two chambers divided by means of a perforated transverse partition, the slide E, with perforations to register with the perforations in the transverse partition of the box, provided with the stops d, and wire pieces 0, substantially as described, and for the purposes state In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY BELL.
