Description

Aug. 3, 1948.4 R.l H. MaccLosKEY GARMENT Filed June l, 1945 Zlillll BY ZQSQ? M 2 E;
Patented Aug. 3, 1948 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE This invention relates to garments, and more particularly an improved yoke and neck structure which may be used with various garments.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved yoke and neck structure which will give the appearance of an open neck or collar, and at the same time provide a chest covering.
Another object of this invention is to provide in the yoke of a garment, a tucker or insert which is free of the chest portion of the garment and will close the open portion of the collar.
A further object of this invention is to provide a garment wherein the back part is extended over the shoulders to form the yoke, and the upper portion of the front of the garment underlaps the yoke and extends over the chest, being free from the inner edges of the yoke so that the head may be readily extended through the head opening, and this opening then contracted to engage loosely about the neck.
To the foregoing objects, and others which may hereinafter more fully appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a detail front elevation partly broken away of a garment constructed according to an embodiment of this invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front elevation of a modified form of this invention.
Referring to the drawing and first to Figures l, 2 and 3, the numeral I0 designates generally the rear or back of the garment and the numeral Il designates generally the front. A pair of sleeves I2 and I3 are secured to the garment at the shoulder portion thereof. The back III of the garment is extended upwardly over the shoulders and then forwardly and downwardly to provide a yoke which is formed of oppositely disposed yoke members |4` and I5. The yoke members I4 and I5 have secured to their inner edge portions a collar I6 and the inner edges of the yoke members VI4 and I5 are V-shaped as indicated by the numerals I'I and I8. The lower edges of the yoke members I4 and I5 are upwardly and outwardly inclined, as indicated by 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-122) the numerals I9 and 20, and the lower edges of the yoke members are'stitched to the upper edge of the front II by one or more rows of stitchings 2l and 22 respectively. The V shape formed by the inclined inner edges I'I and I8 of the yoke members I4 and I5 provide an opening extending downwardly from the forward end of the collar I6.
In order to provide a means whereby the opening between the downwardly convergent edges of the yoke members I 4 and I5 may be substantially closed, I have provided a tucker or insert 23. The tucker or insert 23 is disposed on the inner sides of the yoke members I4 and I5 and has a lower edge conguration coincident with the lower edges I9 and 20 of the yoke members I 4 and I5 and is secured to the yoke members and to the front by the stitchings 2| and 22. The opposite ends of the tucker or insert 23 are stitched, as at 24 and 25, to the arm holes and sleeve members I2 and I3 thereby leaving the upper horizontal edge 25 of the tucker or insert free. lIhe upper edge 25 of the tucker extends across the upper ends of the V-shaped edges Il and I8 of the yoke members I4 and I5 and provides a closing means for closing the openingv which is formed by the V-shaped edges I'I and t8. In addition the tucker or insert 23 provides an expansible means so that the head of the wearer may be extended through the upper end of the garment and the opening for the head will thereafter become contracted so that the tucker or insert 23 will t substantially snug against the neck and across the chest of the wearer. It will be understood that if desired and as shown in Figure 3, the tucker or insert 23 may be formed integral with the front I I.
Referring now to Figure 4, there is shown a modified form of garment embodying a back 21, a front 28 and a pair of sleeves 29 and 30. The sleeves 29 and 30 are of the raglan type, forming a, pair of downwardly divergent inner edges 3| and 32 defining a pair of oppositely disposed yoke members 33 and 34. The front 28 is extended upwardly being provided with a straight or horizontal upper edge 35 and defining a tucker or insert 3B. The opposite edges of the tucker or insert 36 are extended laterally of the yoke members 33 and 34 and terminate, as at 31 and 38, within the upper portions of the sleeves 29 and 30 respectively. The opposite ends of the tucker or insert 36 are then stitched, as at 39 and 40 respectively, to the forward side of the sleeve members 29 and 30 on the inner surfaces thereof. The
' upper horizontal edge 35 of the tucker or insert 36 is free and the downwardly divergent edges 3l and 32 are also free of the tucker or insert 3B. In this manner the tucker or insert 35 may be distorted or pulled forwardly so as to expand the neck opening 4l to permit the insertion of the head through the neck opening, whereupon the tucker or insert 36 will assume its normal posi tion straight across the chest of the wearer and will constrict the neck opening to the normal position.
The garment hereinbefore described may -be a shirt, dress, waist or other suitable garment and it will be understood that such garment may have the sleeves thereof eliminated, if desired, in which case the opposite ends of the tucker or insert will be secured only to the yoke. With a garment constructed according to Athis invention the use of buttons or fastening means for the collar or neck portion of the garment has been leliminated, while at the same time the front of the garment will be normally closed althoughgiving the appearance, where the garment is one using a collar, that the neck of the garment is open.
What 1 claim is:
A `garment of the kind described, `comprising front and rear panels, `a yoke carried by the upper end of said rear panel and extending between the upper ends of said panels, said -yoke formed with a V-shaped cut-out in the front portion thereof, a tucker on the upper end of said front panel, the lower end of said yoke overlying said tucker, stitching securing the lower edge of said yoke to said front panel and said tucker, stitching securing said tucker and said yoke along their overlying side edges, said tucker having a free straight upper edge 4between the side edges thereof and extending across said cut-out, whereby the'neok opening 'formed between said tucker and said yoke may be expanded and contracted.
