4 Claims.
My invention relates to an adjustable cap, and more specifically to a cap comprising concealed band-adjusting means in back for adjusting the size of the cap. My invention additionally relates to improved means for adjusting the head size of a cap.
An object of my invention is to provide a cap of improved construction wherein the head size of the cap may be readily adjusted to fit the wearer. A further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable headband for a cap, the adjusting means being so arranged as to be unnoticeable, yet readily exposable for adjustment.
Thenovel features which I believe to be characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. My inventlon itself, however, both as to its organization and method of operation, together with further objects and advantages thereof may best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a view of a cap incorporating the invention showing thegeneral appearance of a preferred embodiment; Fig. 2 is z a view of a cap showingthe details of a removable visor, Fig. 3 is a rear view of a cap showing means for adjusting the size of the cap; and Fig. 4 is a view showing modified adjusting means applicable to the rear of the cap of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a cap embodying my invention as it appears when ready for use, the cap comprising a crown l, formed from two pieces of fabric or other material joined by a preferably welted, felled, or bound seam 2. Band 3 is stitched to the base of the crown as later described. Visor 4 is suitably bound along the edge and is attached to band 3 as best shown in Fig. 2. A row of female snap fastener members 5 is provided along curved upstanding flange 6 formed along, or secured to, the inner edge of visor 4. The flange is adapted to fit under band 3 alon the front of the cap, female members 5 being arranged for cooperation with male snap fastener members 1 provided along the inner face of the band.
For purposes of illustration, a portion of the band is cut and rolled back in Fig. 2 to show one of the male snap fastener members 1. Only the upper edge of the band is stitched to crown I "across the front of the cap to permit insertion of flange 6 under the band. For the remainder of its length, the band is stitched to the crown along both the top and bottom edges, which may 2 be bound or rolled as shown in portion visible in Fig. 2.
Referring now to Fig. 3, a strap member 8 is secured at or near its two extremities to the outer surface of band 3 a short distance from the overlapping end portion of the band, and to the inner surface a short distance from the other underlying end. Stop member 9, which is preferably buckle-like in form, is adjustably positioned on strap 8 and is provided with male snap fastener members i ii for cooperation with female members H attached to the undersideof band 3 adjacent the outer end portion l2, near which strap 8 is attached to the underside of the band. When fastened down to the stop member 9, the end portion l2 serves to completely hide the stop member and the greater part of strap 8 from view. Adjustments to adapt the cap for a desired head size are accomplished by sliding member 9 along strap 3, the member 9 being readily exposed for adjustment by detaching from the stop member and rolling back end portion l2 into the position shown in Fig. 3. Since strap 8 is secured at both ends to band 3, the stop member cannot be removed from the strap.
A slit I3 is shown in the back portion of crown l adjacent the ends ofband 3, providing a latitude permitting adjustments of the cap size within wide limits. The edges of the slit are preferably hemmed as shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 4 shows a modified construction of the size adjusting means wherein the stop member 9 has no snap fastener members. The end portion I! of band 3 carries a split ring M arranged to slip over strap 8 beyond stop member 9. The stop member, in cooperation with ring 14 and end portion l2 of band 3, thus determines the head size of the cap. The shape and dimensions of ring M are so arranged that it will not pass over the stop member. The ring may be of relatively stiif material and formed as shown so as to be slideably positionable onto strap 8, or it may be of a spring-like or soft deformable metal, plastic, or other material and may normally form a closed ring with a slit or joint so arranged as to permit fastening around or removal from the strap. As indicated in the drawing, the ring is preferably flattened and when in operative position on the strap, serves to so position end portion I2 of band 3 as to cover and conceal the stop member.
If the cap is to be cleaned or washed, visor 4 is removed, and, if desired, the ring I3 is slipped off of strap 8 and slipped out of the loop provided in the end of band 3. As pointed out above, stop member 9 cannot be removed from strap 8 unthe turned-back ing head sizes. While no sweat band is shown-in the drawings, it is contemplated that a sweat band of any known type desired may be provided, it being necessary only that such band'be not joined into a continuous band at the back of .the cap,
since allowance should be 'm'adefor adjustmei'its to the head size of the cap without wrinkling or stretching the sweat band.
While I have shown only certain. preferred embodiments of my inventionby ,Way of illustration, many modifications will occur to those skilled in theart ,an'd I 'therefore wish to have it understood that I intendin the appended claims, to cover all such modifications as 'fall within the true spirit and scope of my invention.
" What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patentof the United States is:
