Description

July 20, 1948. v. A. BOWERS 2,445,510
CLOSURE ATTACHMENT F OR CIGARETTE PACKAGES Filed Oct. 26, 1945 V Var/7077 550M618 Patented July 20, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOSURE ATTACHMENT FOR CIGARETTE PACKAGES 2 Claims.
This invention relates to an attachment for a cigarette package which is designed to be used thereon after the package has been opened by the conventional method of tearing off that part of the package top at either upper corner thereof.
An object of this invention is to eliminate the disadvantage of having loose particles of tobacco from the cigarettes dropping into the pocket, pocket-book or any other place the cigarette package may be carried.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that will protect the ends of the cigarettes keeping dust and dirt from coming in contact therewith and also assists in keeping the natural moisture in the cigarettes.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a cigarette package.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2 of the Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side view of the device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 5 is a bottom view thereof, and
Figure 6 is a front end view thereof.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the reference numeral Ill indicates the device which will be of a size and shape to snugly fit the corner of a cigarette package and is to be constructed of one piece of metal, plastic or similar materials.
The device comprises a top l2, having forward bevelled edges I 4 and a depending marginal flange it formed at the rear end thereof.
The flange comprises the end l8 and sides 20 which extend approximately one-half of the length of the top [2 from the rear thereof and shoulders 24 formed at the forward edge of the flange 1-6 will abut the top of the package and act as a stop to prevent forward movement of the device I!) on the package A.
The top I! is of the Width of a conventional cigarette package A and the end l8 and sides 20 are formed to make close contact with the sides and ends of the package.
Struck out from the top l2 from a point on a line with the forward edge of the sides 20 is a curved spring clip 22 which is adapted to exert pressure on the top oi the package A, and retain the device thereon.
In use after the package A has been opened the forward bevelled end of the top I2 of the device I8 is inserted beneath the top of the package as shown in Figure 2, and the spring clip 22 bearing against the outer side of the top of the package A will retain the device in position on the package.
It will be seen therefore that a simple and inexpensive device has been provided that will accomplish the objects of the invention and it is believed the operation and construction thereof will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
It is to be understood however, that modifications and changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts without departing'from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims,
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a flat top having a forward bevelled edge and a depending marginal flange on the rear end thereof, said flange comprising an end and sides extending for approximately one-half of the length of said top, shoulders formed in said top at the inner ends of the sides of said flange, said top being of a size to conform to the top of a cigarette package and means for retaining said top on said package.
2. The invention as in claim 1, wherein the means for retaining said top on said package, comprises a spring clip struck out from said top and overlying said top in parallel relation thereto.
