HOLDER FOR PAINT BUCKETS AND THE LIKE Filed Aug. 10, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 WQCLEZZQHZ? m Maw Patented July 13, 1948 STATES: PATENT OFFICE -William Charles Gebhardt, San Antonio, Tex. Application Augustclli, 1945, Serial No. 610,103
The-present invention relates to new and.useful improvements inholders for paint buckets and similar containers and equipment used by painters andhas fr its primary object to provide a deviceofthis character adapted forattaching to a ladder for the purpose of holding the bucketandother paintersequipment in a convenient position while standing on the ladder.
Animportant object of the invention is to provide anattachment of this character, which can be readily applied to a ladder and removedtherefrom and which can be easily taken apart for convenience and car rying in a compact form.
.A still furtherobject of the invention is to provide an attachment of this. character by meansof which the several parts may be, as sembled ina reverse position so that the paint bucket ma beheld at either side of the ladder.

cient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended..-
Otherobjects and advantages reside in the de--.- tails of constructionandoperation as more fullyshowing the device arranged on an opposite side offt h e ladder, and
-,.Figure 5; is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on a line '55 of Figure 3.- w Referring now'to the drawings in detaiL-where;
in, fo'r'the purpose ofillus'tration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the
A U-shaped member 8 has its leg portions 9 disposed at opposite sides of the rail 1 and with the bight portion ID of of the U-shaped member positioned transversely across the front of the rail.
v inside of the rail I of the ladder, as will be ap 2 I The leg portions 9 of the U-shaped member are formed with openings ll adapted to receive bolts 12 and I3.
The bolt I2 is inserted through an opening M in the lower portion of the book 5, said lower portion of the hook being positioned against the inside of one of the leg members 9 for securing said U-shaped member to the book. The lower end of the hook is bent angularly, as indicated at I5, under the leg portion 9 of the U-shaped member, as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 5 of the drawings. 4 r r A tray I6 is formed with upstanding sidewalls H at its sides and one end, the other end of the tray being open, one of the side walls l'l being disposed parallel to the leg portion 9 attached to the hook 5 and is formed with an opening Ha adapted to receive the bolts l2. The lower portion of the side wall I! of the tray is also formed with a slotted opening l8 adapted to receive the angular lowerend I5 of the hook.
The upper edges of the side walls of the tray are also formed with outwardly extending flanges l9 overlying the leg 9 of the U-shaped member 8. I
The tray [6. is adapted to hold putty, or similar material, and the inner end of the tray is formed with an opening, 20 in the bottom thereof adapted for receiving the blade of a putty knife 2i for supporting the knife in an upright position in the tray. I
o By attaching the tray to the lower end of the hook 5, the tray will thus be supported on the parent from an inspection of Figure 1 of the drawings.
To the outside leg 9 of the U-shaped member 8 is secured a vertical bar of strap metal 22 by paint bucket, or other receptacle, 25.- l
The lower endof the bar 22 is bent .angularlyf outwardly, as indicated at 2B, and positioned in a notch 21 in the lower edge of an arcuate plate 28 secured to the bar 22 by means of a bolt 29. The plate 28 is pivotally supported on the bolt 29 and the notch 21 is of a length greater than the bar 22, as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 2 of the drawings, whereby to enable the plate 28 to assumea horizontal position and thus to engage the side of the bucket 25 to support the bucket perpendicularly at the outside of the ladder.
The bar 22 is also pivoted on the bolt I3 so that the bar will also gravitate into a perpendicular position.
In Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, I have illustrated the invention mounted for use on the righthand rail I of a ladder, while in Figure 4 the invention is shown mounted on the left-hand rail of the ladder, this being accomplished by attaching the lower end of the hook 5 and bar 22 to the legs 9 of the U-shaped member, 8 oppositel from that illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
Also, if desired, the lower end of the hook --5 may be attached to the inside of the tray l6.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the parts formin the device may be easily and quickly assembled in position and whenseparated may be carried or stored in a compact space. r
In view of the foregoing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed description thereof is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It' is of course to be understood that the extensionladder arm is changeable to a step ladder arm. As is apparent, the paint pot hook has two arms, one for extension ladders and one for step ladders, inasmuch as extension ladders have round rungs, while step ladders have steps. Consequently one arm will not fit over both types of steps.
Obviously both arms are not used contemporaneously. If used in conjunction withan extension ladder, the rounded hook is connected for use and the step ladder arm is left off and can be carried inan overall pocket, if desired.
'It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by'the spirit of the invention as herein described,- and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A paint bucket holder for ladders comprising a hook adapted for attaching to a rung of the ladder; a u shaped memberattached at one side to the lower portion of said hook, said U-shaped member being adapted tostraddle arail of the ladder and having an inner leg adapted to de'' tachably-support a tray, a vertically extending bar attached to the other, outer leg of said, U-shaped member, a hook at the upper end of said bar adapted for engagement by the bail of a bucket and an arcuate plate at the lower end of said bar adapted to support the side of the bucket. I 2. A paint bucket holderfor ladders comprisinga hook adapted for attaching to a'rung of the ladder, a U-shaped member attached at one side to thelower portion of said hook, said U-shaped member being adapted to'straddle arail of the ladder, a verticalbar pivotally attached intermediateit's ends to the outer leg of said U'-shaped member, a hook on the upper end of said bar adapted for engagement by the bail of a bucket, and an arcuate plate pivotally attached at the lower end of said bar for engaging the side of the bucket, said bar gravitating into a perpendicular position.
3. 4. Aladder attachment of the class described comprising a hook adapted forattaching to a rung of the ladder, said hook being formedmf strap "metal and with itslowerendtwisted to" ex: tend flatly against one side of a rail'oftheladder, an angularly bent flange" at the lower end of said hook, a -U-shaped'memberadapted 'to --straddle the rail of the ladder, the inner'sideof said U-shaped member resting'onsaid flange; a tray having'outwardly extending flanges at-its side edges and also "formed with a slot in the lower portion of one side thereof, said flange at one side of thetray overlying' theinner side of-the U- shaped member and said slot being adapted to receive'the flange of the hook, means detachably securing said inner side of the -U-shaped member and said side of the tray to-th'e lowerend of said h00k,-said tray also having an opening inits body adapted 'to receive the bladecf a putty'knife for supporting the knife in anupright position in the tr'ay,-anda hanger attached to the-other side of said l'J -shaped memberadapted forsu'spending a bucket therefrom.
