The upper side of the L-shap P ing drawing which illustrates the preferred emtion 4 is of substantial length and may b for bodiment ofthe invention and in which: p about /2 c es, n accordance with Figure 1 illustrates a ladder in combination the p rred embodiment of the invention. Figure 4 is a front view of the ladder with the It is a feature of this invention t the P pail holder mounted on the right side of the ladholder described y b p yed e t er on the 45 d ri ht, as i Figure 1, right side of the ladder, as shown in Figure 1, Referring to the drawing and particularly t or on the left side of the ladder, as shown in Figure 4, it will be seen that the pail holder of Figure 2. In either case the ball [8 of the bucket the present invention consists of a single piece 20 is supported y the stamped-out metal k to of sheet metal in two integral sections including In order t p eve e ental d s od an L-shaped section A and a substantially inment of the bail, the metal hook 8 is recessed verted U-shaped section B. For convenience in slightly at point 22 so that it is somewhat wider description, the L-shaped section A may be deat this point than thereabove. The weight of scribed as having a base portion 2 and a top the bucket 20 pulls downwardly against the 5g portion 4. The base portion 2 and the top porstamped-out hook member 8." At the same time the weight is distributed against the side of the upright of the ladder through the base 2 of the L-section A and since this is of substantial depth, the weight of the bucket is distributed over a substantial area of the side of the ladder upright. The tendency of the base portion 2 to press inwardly against the outside of the ladder upright is counteracted to some extent by the arrangement of the inverted U-shaped portion B, which will tend to press against the inside of the ladder upright in an opposite direction, thereby further tending to distribute the weight over another portion of the area of the ladder upright. If the pail holder is used on the right side of the ladder, a part of the weight of the bucket is also distributed over the top of the right ladder upright through section 4 of L- shaped section A, assuming that the ladder is placed on a slant in the usual manner, as shown in Figure 1. The distribution of the weight in this manner tends to take away from the rung of the ladder much of the weight of the bucket, and since the rung of the ladder ordinarily is the first part of the ladder to wear out, it is desirable not to accelerate this wear any more than necessary.
The particular arrangement and construction of the pail holder is such, as previously explained, that the edges of the inverted U-shaped 'member B fall in a plane substantially parallel and closely adjacent to the inside of the ladder upright, regardless of whether the pail holder is placed on the right or left side of the ladder. The inside of the base section -2 of the L-shaped member A is adapted to fit against the outside of the ladder upright so that any tendency of the pail holder to slip from side to side'is counteracted on the one hand by the edges of the 40 inverted U-shaped member B and .on the other hand by the fiat base section 2 of the L-shaped member A.
The pail holder requires no special means for fastening it to the ladder upright regardless of whether it is used on the left side or the right side of the ladder. This is an important feature of the invention because heretofore it has been customary to provide a special hook or means to prevent the pail holder from moving from side to side and such means have been adapted only for pail holders that were to be used on the right side of the ladder. The present invention, therefore, provides for the first time a simple, compact, inexpensive type of pail holder made from a single piece of sheet metal which may be used on either side of a ladder to hold the pail against the side of the ladder while providing against accidental dislodgment thereof.
It will be understood that certain variations may be made in the invention described without departing therefrom. The pail holder illustrated is preferably made from a single piece of sheet metal which, for all practical purposes, is substantially rigid, although it may have very slight flexibility. However, the pail holder can .be made from other materials of construction ing the bail of a bucket.
