F. SOHNLE BUCKET SUPPORT Filed June 19 1925 19 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 28, 1926.
UNITED STATES FREDRICK SOHNLE, 0F NEWARK, NE'W JERSEY.
BUCKET SUPPORT.
Application filed June 19, 1925.
This invention relates to supporting devices, and has particular reference to an improved device for supporting pails, buckets, paint pots, or the like, from ladders or other members whereby the pail, bucket or pot is maintained in a horizontal position to prevent spilling of the contents.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide an improved support of the character, set forth which effectually supports the pail, bucket, or pot, so as to prevent spilling of the contents.
The invention furthermore oomprehends a supporting device of the character described, which. is readily applicable to or removable from the bail of the bucket, and which when applied thereto precludes the possibility of accidental falling of the supporting device into the pail or bucket.
The invention furthermore comprehends a supporting device of the character set forth which is so constructed as to permit the ready engagement and positioning of the device on the rung of a ladder with the use of one hand whereby the other hand may be employed for the purpose of supporting and balancing the user.
The invention aims as a still further object to provide a device of the character described which is extremely simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efiicient in its purpose. I
With, the above recited and other objects in View, reference is had to the following specification and drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claim as it is tobe clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope ofsaid claim may be resorted to when found expedient.-
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a pail or bucket constructed in accordance with the invention and supported by means of a supporting device from a rung of a ladder;
Fig. 2 is a front view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view thereof taken approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the supporting device removed from the bucket;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view illustrating Serial No. 38,261.
the manner in which the device is associated with the bucket;
6 is a fragmentary side view illustrating another use of the supporting device.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 designates a pail, bucket or paint pot, which is provided with a bailshaped handle 11 formed with an offset hook 12 in one of its sides.
The supporting device constituting the present invention, is preferably constructed from a strip of resilient material or metal, one terminal of which is provided with a hook 13 having a shank 14 provided with an offset twisted portion 15 and formed with a lateral extension 16. The free end of the extension 16 is bent rearwardly to form the U-shaped portion 17, the free leg of which is provided at its forward end with a lateral terminal 18 overlying the extension 16. The device, which is primarily intended for supporting paint pots from ladders, is designed to have the hook 13 engaged over one of the rungs R of a ladder L, so that the shank 14 depends therefrom, and the portions 15' and 17 embrace the inner and outer surfaces of the side rail of the ladder with the extension 16 overlying the front face of the said side rail. The bail 11 is engaged within the U-shaped portion 17 with the offset hook 12 thereof engaging over the bight 19 of said U-shaped portion. Under this arrangement, the paint pot 10 is supported in a vertical position alongside and at one side of the side rail of the ladder. As the user moves upwardly or downwardly on the ladder, he may grasp the bail with one hand to disengage and remove the hook 13 from the rung, and to re-engage the same with the next adjacent rung. This requires the use of only one hand, the other being left free to balance or maintain the user on the ladder. When the supporting device is dis engaged from the rung, there is positively no danger of the same falling within the paint pot, due to its construction.
In some instances where it is desired to support a bucket or pot from a horizontal rail, such as a guard rail G illustrated in Fig. 6, the hook 13 is engaged thereover and the bail 11 of a paint pot or bucket 10, is suspended by engagement within the U-shaped portion 17.
What is claimed is:
A device for supporting a bucket from one of the rungs of a ladder alongside of the outer surface of a side rail thereof, com prising a strip of material bent to provide a vertical shank having a hooked upper terminal engageable o er one of the rungs, a forwardly bent horizontal portion at the lower end of the shank, a lateral outwardly bent portion therefrom, a rearwardly disposed U-shaped portion having a connecting bight and defining together witlnthe forwardly and laterally bent portions means for embracing the forward edge of the side rail of the ladder, and a lateral inwardly bent extremity overlying the lateral outwardly bent portion, the said U-shaped portion adapted to interengage with the bail of the bucket, whereby to support the same in a vertical position, the said lateral inwardly bent extremity being normally spaced from the lateral outwardly bent p0rtion, a distance less than the thickness of the bail, whereby to afford means for preventing acoidental displacement of the device from the bail when not in supporting position.
