Description

June 29, 1948. PEGLQW 2,444,112
JACK Filed Sept. 14, 1945 INVENTOR. flZbTAT/i P6ZOW A T TOR/YE).
Patented June 29, 1948 UNITED STATES rem;
FFECE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to jacks and more particularly to automobile jacks or the like.
An object of my invention is to provide a jack that combines suitable adjustment and base support.
Another object of my invention is to provide a jack in which the base is constructed in a manner to act as a container for necessary accessories used for changing or repairing tires.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a jack which may be used in combination with the conventional wrench employed to remove wheel bolts on the automobile.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a jack construction that is simple to assemble, easy to operate, economical to manufacture and convenient to transport and store.
Other and further objects of my invention will become more apparent as the description proceeds when taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the front cover removed.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary, cross sectional View of the device shown in Figure 1, taken at the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary, cross sectional view of the device taken at the line 3-3 in Figure 1, showing the bracket arrangement in phantom, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the assembled device showing the cover partially open.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and referring now to the same, the character I shows a jack screw provided with a square head H at the top and an annular outwardly projecting flange [2, forming a part of the jack screw ID, located a short distance below the head H. There is an enclosure I3 constructed of sheet metal and open at its front end. This enclosure has a top plate is into which a threaded insert l5 is fastened by means of bolts or rivets Hi. The top ll of the screw I0 is shown square, but may be any shape to fit the conventional wrench used to remove the nut from the wheel bolts on the car. A wrench of this type is usually furnished with the automobile and is used as a means of rotating the jack screws ID on the device.
The device, as shown, is employed for use with an outwardly projecting bracket ll attached to one of the wheel bolts I8 on the outer face of the wheel as shown in phantom in Figure 3. This type of bracket is attached to the wheel bolts prior to jacking up the automobile and the automobile is kept suspended by placing a retaining lock below the spring or axle of the car.
The front of the enclosure i3 is open and is provided with a pair of channels l9 and I9 which slidably support a sheet metal cover 23. Although I show the device with a sliding cover, it is manifest that a hinged cover may be used and is just as efficient and practical.
The device, as shown and described, lends itself readily as a tool box or container for the accessories employed in combination with the jack when a Wheel or tire change is made. The shape and construction of the enclosure forming the base of the jack is such that a very rigid support is provided when the top of the jack screw is placed through an aperture in the bracket which is attached to the wheel bolts and the conventional socket wrench, furnished with the car and used for removing the nuts from the wheel bolts, provides a ready and convenient means for operating the jack.
In the chosen embodiments of my invention, there are features not heretofore disclosed in the prior art, and although I have shown a particular specific manner in which these component parts are assembled, I do not wish to limit myself to the specific construction shown, for there are many changes that may be made in the form and configuration of the parts without in any way aiiecting the efficiency of the device or its function, and I reserve the right to make such changes as I may deem necessary or convenient without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by letters patent in the United States is:
l. A jack arrangement in combination with a horizontally disposed bracket provided with an aperture, said jack comprising a vertical jack screw threaded at its outer periphery, a head portion arranged for engagement with a wrench, an annular flange surrounding the outer periphery of said screw and attached thereto at a point below the head of said screw, an enclosure, said enclosure open at one of its sides, a cover to seal said opening, a top plate forming a part of said enclosure, said top plate having a threaded member disposed therein, said threaded member provided with an internal thread for engagement with said jack screw, and means for retaining said threaded member in contact with said top plate in a stationary manner.
2. A jack arrangement in combination with the horizontally disposed bracket provided with an aperture, said jack comprising a vertical jack screw threaded at its outer periphery, a head portion arranged for engagement with the wrench, an annular flange surrounding the outer periphery of said screw and attached thereto at a point below the head of said screw, an enclosure, said enclosure wider at its base than at its upper end, said enclosure open at one of its sides, a cover to seal said opening, a top plate forming a part of said enclosure, said top plate having a threaded member disposed therein, said, 7
threaded member provided with an internal thread for engagement with said jack screw, and
4 means for retaining said threaded member in contact with said top plate in a stationary manner.
ALBERT I-I. PEGLOW.
