2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- czar/ 6 636 12 INVENTOR ATTORNEY CHARLES 0. SMITH, OF CLEVELAND, OIIIO.
HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1 922.
Application filed March 6, 1920. Serial No. 363,825.
To calico/r0912 it may concern Be it known that l, CHAnnEs C. SMITH, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drop forge hammers, and comprehends the provision of a novel construction of means for holding the gibs for the ram associated with the housing in a manner, so, that the gibs can be readily and easily moved outwardly or away from each other to permit the ram to be readily separated therefrom as the occasion requires.
In hammers of the above mentioned char-- acter, stationary bolts are usually employed to hold the gibs fixed to the housing, and these bolts are frequently broken. in addition to this fact, the piston rod for the ram is sometimes fractured. especially in cold weather, and the general construction of the hammer is such that it necessitates the expenditure of considerable time and labor before the ram can be removed from between the gibs, and the hammer in its entirety properly repaired.
It is therefore the object of this invention to provide means whereby the gibs of the ram are yieldably supported within the housing and normally maintained properly spaced to accommodate the ram, the means for holding the gibs in this position being readily accessible and adjustable to permitthe gibs to move within the housing aw y from each other when it is necessary to remove the rams from between the gibs for any purpose whatever.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connect1on with the accompanylng drawings, the
invention residing in the construction, com
Figure 4 is a similar view, taken on the line 41 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the gibs.
Flgure 6 is a perspective view of the block and wedge shaped element.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 in dicates the base of the structure, and from which rises the housing 11 for the gibs 12. It is apparent that there is one of these gibs for each housing, and that the ram 14 is actuated by the piston rod reciprocating between the gibs 12. As shown in Figure 5, each gih is provided with a channel 16 for the reception of the adjacent edge of the ram A. Each side of the housing is channeled as at 17 to receive the gib 12, the channel 17 being of sufficient dimension as to permit the gib to be moved wholly within the channel in a manner and for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Each side of the housing is provided with a horizontally arranged pocket 18 opening at one end into the adjacent channel 17. and with a transverse bore 19 opening at the front of the housing and communicating with the pocket 18. A block of steel 01' other suitable material indicated at 20 is slidably fitted within the pocket 18, one end of this block being perfectly flat to bear against the adjacent side of the gib 12. while the opposite end of the block is bevelled as at 21. Slidably fitted in the transverse bore 19 is an adjustable wedge 22 having a threaded stem 23 with which a nut 24 is associated. The wedge shaped side 25 of the wedge 22 bears against the inclined extremity 21 of the block 20 as shown. A washer 26 surrounds the stem 23 and bears against one side of the housing while interposed between the washer 26 and the nut 24 is a coiled spring 27 which functions to exert a pull upon the wedge shaped element 22, thereby causing the latter to force the block 20 against the gib 12 holding the latter projected from the housing in an active position. There is preferably two of these wedge shaped members or blocks used for each gib, and arranged adjacent the opposite ends thereof as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. Each side of the housing at a point eoui-distant between the wedges is'formed with an opening 28 to receive one end of a bolt 29 carried by the gib 12. The end of the bolt 29 which 1s secured to the gib is preferably flared as at 30 and provided with a projection 31 connected with the gib in a manner to prevent rotation or slight turning of the bolt 29. The opposite end of the bolt 29 is provided with a nut 32which is positioned within the opening 28. Encircling the bolt 29 is a spring 33, the latter having one end bearing against one wall of the opening 28 and its opposite end bearing against the nut 32, this spring being normally under tension to retract the gih within the channel 17 oi 'the housing when the wedges 22 are adjusted to effect a release of the blocks for this purpose. 7
In practice, should the pistonrod 15 become broken, necessitating the removal oi the ram 14 from between the gibs 12, as a part of the piston rod often offers considerable trouble and difficulty in the separation 7 direction to Manifestly, the gibs are separated from the ram 14:, thus allowing the latter tobe easily removed from engagement for repairs.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limitrmyselt to the details of construction herein shown and described inasmuch assuch changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed,
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is:
In a drop forge hammer, a base, a housing including spaced channeled members supportedupon said base, a gib slidably fitted in each member, a ram arranged to reciprocate between said gibs, spring influenced wedge shaped members slidably, fitted in said housing, blocks slidably fitted in said housing between said wedge shaped members and said gibs, and means for automatically retracting the gibs within the'housing to an inactive position when the wedges are adjusted to release said gibs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES SMITH.
