BED-LOUNGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,329, dated July 12, 1881'.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE SNYDER and GEORGE E. KRAUSE, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Lounges, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of our invention is to produce a bed-lounge which shall present an unbroken wooden front when closed up, as lounges not bed-lounges do, and at the same time allow the lounge portion to remain entirely undisturbed. This is accomplished by constructing the bed portion of the lounge in such manner that it may be attached by vertical hinges to the lounge portion, and be closed up by being swung horizontally around under said lounge portion, instead of being folded up, as is the ordinary method. Such a construction is hereinafter more particularly described.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a closed lounge embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a top or plan view of the same when open; Fig. 3, a front elevation when in the same position shown by Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a head end elevation when in the same position, except that the two parts of the bed portion are folded together; and Fig. 5, a transverse vertical section thereof on the dotted line as a; in Fig. 1. In Figs. 2 and 4 the upholstered portion of the back is removed and only the standards which support the back shown.

In said drawings the portions marked A represent the frame-work of the stationary or lounge portion of my improved lounge; B, that part of the frame-work of the bed portion which remains continuously in a horizontal position; 0, that part of the frame-work of the bed portion which is hinged to the part B and folds over thereon when the lounge is closed up; and D appropriate casters or feet, upon which the several parts are mainly mounted.

The frame-work B is constituted, in part, of the board B, which also serves as the front to the lower part of the whole lounge when closed up, and is therefore usually given an ornamental finish upon the outside, as shown in Fig. 1. Appropriate hinges E serve to connect said frame-work B at one end to the framework A, while at the other end a projecting pin or lug, F, and a catch, G, serve to connect them when in closed position. Hinges H connect the parts B and O, and small projections c c 0 upon one or both of said parts serve to interlocksaid frames along the center, and maintain them both at the same level under the varying pressures which come upon them in use.

When the lounge is closed up the bed portion is sustained, in addition to the hinges E and pin F, by the rail I, as is most clearly shown in Fig. 5.

When the bed portion is closed up my improved lounge is not dissimilar in appearance to other lounges not adapted to be used as a bed, as, there being no hinges in the front, the wooden front B can and does extend up to the edge of the ordinary upholstering. When the bed portion is to be used, however, the

catch G is unlatched, and said portion is swung around on the hinges E to about right angles and unfolded into the position shown most plainly by Fig. 2.

The hinges H, lugs c, and folding legs J sustain the part 0 when unfolded, while the part B is regularly mounted on casters, like the main part of the lounge.

Having thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bed-lounge, the combination of a lounge portion, which remains at all times in the same condition irrespective of the position of the bed portion, and a bed portion, which is attached to said lounge portion by vertical hinges and swings around under said lounge portion when it is closed up, substantially as set forth.

2. The. combination, with the bed portion of a folding lounge constructed and operating substantially as specified, of a rail, I, which is to prevent said bed portion from dropping away from the lounge portion (when the bed,

portion is closed under the lounge portion) should the lounge be lifted up, substantially our hands and seals at Indianapolis, Indiana,

as shown and specified. this 4th day of January, A. D. 1881. 10
