Patented June 1, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE I. aazoii mlnoxl I Edwin A. Locke. Jr.,
Quincy, Masn, asslgnor to The Nevins-Church Press, New York, N. Y. Application February 21, 1946, Serial No. 649,153 6 Claims. (01. 229-27) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes for razor blades and has especial reference to one in which new as well as used blades may be therein disposed.
As is well known, used razor blades constitute quite a disposal problem, and it is the main object of this invention to provide a device in which this problem is solved inthe simplest and most logical and efiicient manner.
A further object is to provide a box or carton in which the new and used blades can be kept together but in separate compartments, in other words when you buy the new blades you are provided with means for storing or disposing of the used blades at the same time.
Still another object is to provide a box which preferably is formed into one or more modifications of box from a single-piece blank which can be folded either by hand or machinery and then assembled either 'by machinery or by hand to form the box.
Further and more specific objects, features, and advantages will more clearly appear from the specification hereinafter set forth especially when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate present preferred forms which the invention may assume and which form part of the specification.
In the briefest and most general terms the invention includes a box blank with foldable sections forming end'and side walls and an intermediate partition to form separate, spaced, preferably vertical chambers, one for the new blades and one for the used blades. The partition wall is provided with a slot near its top into which the used blades can be inserted for disposal into one of the chambers. The box is provided along the top of one end wall with a separable portion connected to the top of the box so that when the separation takes place the top and upper side of the chamber containing the new blades are exposed as well as the slot in the partition wall. In this manner, therefore, the new blades are readily accessible and the slot is available for the disposal of the used blades. The only other,
difference in the two forms shown is, that in one form the flaps and connecting means are adapted to be assembled and related by machinery and glued together, whereas in the other form the flaps are provided with looking tabs whereby the fla s and sections may be held in relative position without gluing and may be assembled by hand. The present preferred forms which the invention may assume is illustrated in the drawings of which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of one form of the box;
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; i
Fig. 3 is a horizontal cros section taken on v the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box showing the top pulled up exposing the new-blade chamber;
Fig. 5 is a plan of the entire box blank for the form of box;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another form of I box;
Fig. 7 is a vertical section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 6;
Fi 8 is a horizontal cross section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of this form of box showing the cover lifted by breaking it along the serrated line; and,
Fig. 10 is a plan view of the blank for this form of box.
In the first form of box shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the blank is provided with a. plurality of fold lines A, dividing it into the following sections, namely, a connecting section "I, an intermediate partition wall section II, another connecting section I2, the rear end wall section l3, a side wall section I4, the front end wall section l5, and another side wall section [6, two bottom flaps I1 and I8 connected respectively to the rear end and front end wall-sections l3 and I5. Flaps l9 and 20 are connected respectively to the top 'of the front end and rear end wall sections l 5 and I3. A flap 2| isconnected to the top of the intermediate partition wall section II and has a horizontal creased line 25 running medially thereof. The front end wall section is provided with a horizontal slit 24 near its top edge and with vertical weakened lines 23 running up from the ends of the slit 24 to the top of the wall along the lines of fold. The intermediate partition wall section is also provided with a slot 26 near its top,
In assembling the blank its two outer ends are drawn toward the observer. Then referring to Figs. 2 and 3 it will be seen that the connecting section III is disposed against the left portion of side wall M with the partition wall section II disposed between the front end and rear end wall section l5 and I3 thus dividing the box into two chambers the one on the left for used razor blades v and the one on the right for new blades.
II. The .bottom flaps II and II are folded up and sin together. The connecting sections i and I: are glued to their respective side wall sections. As seen in Fig. 2 the lower half of the flap 2| is bent over the top of the left hand chamber and the upper half of flap ii is bent back against the lower half and receives the end of the flap ll connected to the front end wall section i5. These flap portions are glued together. Then the flap 20 is bent down over them and glued in lace.
p It will then be observed that assuming the right chamber to be filled with new blades, that when one wishes to get a new blade he breaks the upper portion of the front end wall section It above the slit 24 and this will permit it and the top wall to be raised as shown in Fig. 4 whereupon the upper end of the chamber for new blades is exposed so that the newblades can be readily reached and at the same time the slot 26 in the partition wall Ii is also exposed and available so that used blades may, readily be slipped there through.
This particular form of blank is particularly adapted for machine assembly and filling.
In the form shown in Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive, the blank is shown in Fig. 10 and has lines of fold A shown in dot and dash lines.
This modified form of box blank is also provided with the same sections iii to It inclusive, and 2|, but in other respects has been changed to make this form one which is especially adapt: able for hand assembly and filling. The partition wall section II is still provided with the slot 28 near its top through which the used blades are inserted into the left hand chamber, and the front end wall section It is provided as before .with the slit 24 and the weakened lines 28.
The changes in this form of box blank over the previous one are that the flap 2| in its upper part is now employed as a lock tab 2i, the flap is now has an upper attached lock tab i9, there are small flaps I4 and i8 at the bottom of the sections i4 and i6 respectively and the flap I! has a lock tab I'I' attached to its lower edge.
Since this form of box blank is adapted to be assembled by hand and without any glue the procedure is as follows:
Assume, as before that the ends of the blank are drawn toward the observer, and referring to Figs. '7 and 8 it willbe seen that, as before the connecting section iii lies against the left portion of the sidewall section ll with the partition wall section ii between the end wall sections i3 and IS, the connecting section I! will lie against the left portionof the side wall section l8. However, in this form the flap 2! lies over the left chamber formed by end wall section i3 and partition wall section II and its lock tab is tucked down inside the top of the end wall section l3 (Fig. 7). The small flaps i4 and I6 are bent up to lie flat towards each other and the flap II lies beneath them with its lock tab II' tucked up inside the lower portion of end wall section ii. The flap It lies over the top of the box and its lock tab I9 is tucked down inside the top of end wall section I3 and between it and the lock tab 2i as shown.
With the right chamber filled with new blades and the parts assembled as described, to open the box it is merely necessary, as before, to pull up on the upper portion of end wall ii at the slit 24 and break this portion away to lift the top and expose the chamber with the new blades therein and also to expose the slot 26 for th reception of the used blades when desired. Of course it is possible in this form to lift the t p flap is as shown in Fig. 9 entirely off the box in which case the chamber for the used blade is still covered.
It will therefore be seen that in these forms there is provided a box made from an integral one-piece blank which when assembled provides two chambers with an intervening partition wall,
one chamber intended for new blades and the other for used blades, the partition wall having a slot near its top to pass used blades into the chamber for used blades. Preferably the right hand chamber which is exposed when the cover is torn open is the one for the new blades and the left hand chamber which is always covered is the one for the used blades. In each case the box has a top cover flap which is pivoted to lift up and connected to the upper portion of the front end wall which is separable by reason of the weakened creased lines to lift it and the cover to exposed the top of the one chamber and expose the partition with the slot therein.
While the invention has been described in detail and with respect to present preferred forms which the invention may assume, is not to be limited to such details and forms since many changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest aspects. Hence it is desired to cover any and all forms and modifications which may come within the language or scope of any one or more of the appended claims.
