Application November 26, 1946, Serial No. 712,374
4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in check protectors and more particularly to a device adapted to perforate the surface of a check.
The primary feature of this invention is to provide a device of the character referred to that can be either operable by hand or motor means thereby assuring an easy and quick means for perforating a check.
Another feature of this invention is to provide a device of this character that will imprint the check with perforations, these perforations being indented from the back of the check or the front of the check depending on the manner in which the check is inserted into said device.
A further feature of this invention is to provide a device of this character having rollers that perforate the check and at the same time feed said check outwardly of the device.
A still further feature of this invention is to provide a device that is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable in construction, efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages'reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of the improved check protector in use.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the check protector.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective View of the check protector showing a motor operating means connected thereto.
Figure 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the manner in which the male and female rollers intermesh.
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the male roller.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 represents a base having a transversely extending rib Ed at its rear. Extending upwardly from the center of rib 5a is a block 8.
A substantially cylindrical longitudinal recess 9 is provided in the base 5 in which a cylindrical male or die roller l0 having extruder points Ina age the socket end [2 of a crank handle l3, saidsocket end carrying a set screw l3a which bears against said shaft ll. 0
An end plate l4 preferably rectangular is held against the forward face of base 5 by a pair of screws l5. plate and adapted to receive the forward end of shaft H, said forward end of shaft l l beingflush with the outer face of plate I4. I I
The extruder points Illa of die roller l 6 extends slightly upwardly from the upper face 8 of the base and slightly below the lower face of said base as shown in Figure 3.
A cylindrical cooperating female roller I6 is journaled on a longitudinal shaft I! for rotation thereon, the rear end of said shaft extending into block 6 and is held therein by a set screw [8.
Cooperating female roller I 6 lies longitudinally over die roller l0 and said cooperating roller It has indentations Ilia into which-the extruder points Ilia of roller In extend as shown in Figblock 6 and extends forward therefrom and said cover is secured to the sides of saidblock by a pair of screws 2%. v
The side edges 2| of said cover extend downwardly toward the upper face of base 5 and are bent laterally to form lips 22 extending in the same direction thereby keeping flat that portion of a check 22a immediately adjacent the rollers When passing therethrough and said side lips 22 are also adapted to guide said check outwardly from one side of the base 5 as rollers It and it are rotated.
In use of the device a check 22a is placed either face downward or face upward on the upper face 8 of base 5 and the end of said check is gripped by rollers l0 and I6 and drawn through the rollers by man pulating crank handle l3.
It will be noted that the perforations indented in the check extend upwardly. For a reverse in the perforations in the check the check is merely inverted.
In order to increase the speed in which the device operates, a pulley wheel 23 replaces the crank handle l3 and said pulley wheel is con- An opening [6 is provided in said 3 nected by an endless belt 24 to a motor means (not shown).
To facilitate resting said base on a supporting surface, downwardly extending legs 25 are formed at the lower corners of said base, said legs being an integral part of said base.
A horizontal recess 26 is provided inwardly from one side of rib 5a, said portion of rib 50. over saidZ recess is slightly resilient and,a veratical set screw 21 carried by rib5'a is adapted'to adjust said rib 5a slightly thereby causing slight adjustment of roller [6 to roller l0.
In view of the foregoing description takenin. conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding; 011511856185 vice will be quite apparent to those skilld'ihtlii art. A more detailed descriptionis accordingly. deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that. even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment. of the invention the. same is: susceptible to:- certain changes fullycompre bended-by thespir-it of the invention asherein described and the: scope of the. appended. claims.
