Description
MARKING MACHINE File April 14, 1941 11T ff A L7 4, Inventor Patented Feb. p24," 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE 1 Claim.
invention will be apparent from areading of the following description taken in connection with the appended drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general front perspective view Ilike housing 6 formed in its front wall l with a row of vertical slots 8 to exposeV milled or knurled disks or wheels S for selective operation of the type belt bearingrollers I0 which are rotatably mounted on the shaft II which is journaled` in the opposite side walls of the housing t in the upper forepart thereof. The characters l2 project from the outer side of the flexible elastic belts i3 which are trained over therollers Ill and also under a U-shaped applicator I4 which depends from the open lower end of the v housing 6 'along the front part thereof, the legsv of this U-shaped form I4 extending up along the inner opposite sides of the housing and being journaled on the shaft I2. The knurled. disks or wheels 9 are secured to the rollers III to which they relate and are located alongside the said rollers on the shaft II, the disks 9 projecting outwardly through the slots 8 for convenient manual operation to move the selected characters I2 to a position underneath the applicator I4. In this position the belts I3 conform atly with the bottom of the horizontal portion ofthe applicator I4, so that the characters then in position are applied iiatly and even to the work.
The rear lower portion of the housing 6 `has an upset bottom wall I5 which terminates at its `forward end in a depending Verticalwall I6,
these two walls providing a receptacle for the inking roller Il which is in the form of a solid rigid mandrel I8 mounted on the shaft I9, the mandrel being covered by a suitable compressible'ink bearing material 2U. The shaft I9 is lOl-103) journaled between the legs and adjacent the bight portion of a bail 2| the forward ends of whose legs are plvoted as indicated by the numerals 22 tothe inner sides of the side walls of the housing IS and between these side walls and the vertical legs ofthe applicator, the legs of the bail 2I being inserted through slots at the ends of vertical walls It` of the said housing. In the inoperative position of the baill 2I the legs thereof protect the ends of the inking roller, and the bight portion of the said bail protects one side of the inking roller, the remaining side and top of the inking roller being protected by the walls I5 and I6 of the housing 6. In View of this arrangement Contact of the inking roller with objects on which the machine is laid is ordinarily prevented and the roller protected from accumulating dust or. other dirt which would impair its efciency.
The bail 2| is adapted to be swung downwardly to the dotted line -position shown in Figure 4 so that the inking roller I'I is in a position to engage forcibly with the character I2 then in position under the applicator I4 and roll across the face of the character so as to properly ink the same. This applies to all of the characters on the various belts I3 which may then be in position under the applicator.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not wish to limit the application of my invention thereto, except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: l
In a, marking machine including a housing having an opening in its bottom, a bar located below the opening and a type carryingbelt passing under the bar, a yoke-shaped bail having the extremities of its arms pivoted to the inner faces and lower portions of the side walls of the housing, said housing having a recess in its lower portion offset from the opening, said recess being formed by an inwardly extending horizontal wall connected at its outer edge to the lower part of a wall of the housingand a vertical wall depending from the inner edge of the horizontal wall, the ends of the vertical wall being inwardly spaced relative to the planes of the walls to which the bail is pivoted with the legs of the bail passing by said ends when the bail is in raised position and an inking roller journaled in the legs of the bail adjacent the bight thereof, said bail when in raised position holding the inking roll in the recess with the bight of the bail closing the outer side of the recess.
