tions of the side walls I3 and I4 are turned inwardly toward each other to provide a pair of head-retaining lips 25 and 26, The said lips 25 and 26 have their extremities spaced from each other a distance less than the diameter of both the body-portion 21 and the rim or flange 28 of cartridges such as are each generally designated by the reference character 29. The upper-inner extremities of the lips 25 and 26 are inclined forwardly and upwardly in parallelism with the extremities of a pair of complementa] retaining-V in Fig. 4, it is to be noted that the height of the lips 39 and 3I respectively formed on the side walls I3 and I4. The space between theextrem-gj A ities of the retaining-lips 30 and 3I is greater than the space between the extremities of the head-retaining lips 25 and 26 andpreferably is but slightly less than the diameter of the body-'- portions 21 of the cartridges such as 29, but suffi-j clently flexible to yield outwardly when slight force is applied thereto in either inserting or removing cartridges such as 29. Y
The head-retaining lips 25 and 26 and the retaining-lips 30 and 3I vabove referred to are, generally speaking, of a form well known in the art. The follower II before referred to includes a follower-body generally designated by the reference character 32 and a follow-arm 33. The follower-body 32 includesa cylindrically-Vcontou'red head` 34 and a similarly contoured stem 35 vaxially in line with the said head but smaller in d1- ameter than the same. The said head 34 is of suchdiameter as to freely slide in the guideway I9, but to be restrained against appreciable tilting thereby. Y
Substantially at the junction of its head 34 and stem 35, the follower-body 32 is formed with a rearwardly-extending linger 36 slidably fitting between the adjacent portions of the Vcomplemental side walls I3 and I4. In its upper portion, the head 34 is.formed with an upwardlyopening notch 3,1'extending in parallelism with the longitudinal axis of the nger 36. The-said notch receives with a rocking t the verticallyextending tail 38 integral with one end of the follower-arm Y33. The said follower-arm 33 alsoV includesa platform-portion 39 extending rearwardly over the nger 36 of the follower-body 32 and having a sliding flt between the adjacent portions of the side Walls I3 and I4 of the housing I9;
A pivot-pin 40 extending transversely lthrough the head 34 of the follower-body 32 and through the tail 38 of the follower-arm 33 serves to piv-V otally connect the said follower-arm to the said follower-body for swinging movement with respect thereto in a vertical plane. The forward lower porti-on of the tail 38, by its engagement with the adjacent portion of the bottom wall of the notch 31 in the follower-body 32, serves to limit the upward swinging movement of the platform-portion 39.
The rearwardly-extending nger 36 of the follower-body 32 is formed with an upwardly-facing spring-receiving socket 4I which receives and stabilizes the lower end of a helical compensat- The upper portion of the compensating-spring 42 fl-ts over a guide-pin 43 extending downwardly from the platform-portion 33 of the follower-arm 33 in substantial axial alignment with the spring-receiving socket 4I.
L'ncircling the downwardly-extending stem 35 of the follower-body 32 is the upper end of the helical follower-spring I2 located and guided in' the guideway I9 in thehouslng IIJ and having its lowerV end resting upon the upper face` of the forward portion of the removable bottom-plate 22 of the said housing. The said follower-spring exerts a constant but yielding effort to move the entire cartridge-follower II upwardly toward the cartridge-delivery end of the housing IU to maintain the uppermost of the column of cartridges 29 against the head-retaining lips 25 and 26 of the housing I0.
Assuming that the housing I0 is loaded subvst'antially to its capacity with rimmed or flanged cartridges like 29, as is indicated by broken lines rear portionof' such column exceeds the height 'ofthe forward'portion of such column due to the rimswor flanges 28. Under these conditions, the
lowermostcartridge of the column will rest upon the platform-portion 39 of the follower-arm 33 and will "cause the said follower-arm to be inclined relatively steeply rearwardly and downwardly. Since the particular housing shown is wderat its rear than at its front, the head-,ends of the .cartridges 29 will be able to swing slightly sidewise and thus avoidl an excessive change .of angle of the follower-arm 33 between its uppermost and its lowermost positions. Y
Now, as the cartridges2'9 are sequentially removed from the upper or cartridge-delivery end of the housing I0 (usually by the breech-bolt of a firearm), the inclination of the said followerarmvwill gradually lessen as the said column of cartridges becomes shorter and shorter, all as will be apparent by comparing the broken-line showing of the follower-arm 33 and the full-line showing thereof` in Fig. 4.
By means of a construction and arrangement of parts exemplified in the accompanying drawings, the follower II will automatically accommodate itself to an exceedingly-high column of flanged or rimmed cartridges or to a singlecartridge without occasioning binding or other malfunctiom'ng of the parts.
The invention maybe carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth Without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claims are intended to be embraced therein.
