FOLDING PARCEL CARRIER Filed April 5," 1 946 Fi INVENTOR. CAEL R. Gsss,
A T'TORNEYI.
Patented May 11, 1948 FOLDING PARCEL CARRIER Carl R. Gese, Rome, N. Y.
Application April 5, 1946, Serial No. 659,837
2 Claims.
The present invention related to parcel carriers and is more particularly concerned with a foldable device of the character referred to.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a foldable parcel carrier which can be stowed away in a shopping bag or a pocket so as to be on hand when unexpectedly called on to carry a cumbersome package.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character referred to of simple and durable construction, the low cost of manufacturing of which will make them readily salable at a low price, or they can be given away by shops as an advertising medium.
With the foregoing and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof in its folded position.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the device in open position.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the handle showing where and how an advertisement may be shown.
Like numerals, as used in the description and drawing, designate the same structural parts.
The carrier, whose members may be con structed of metal or plastics as desired, comprises two arched or U-shaped members l and H. The member 10 is smaller in dimensions than member H and designed to operate within the same. The two members are pivotally joined by pivot bolts 12 through the depending arms l3 at a suitable distance from the extremities thereof to provide a jaw-like movement.
Adjacent their extremities the arms of both members are provided with open slots M, with the mouths of the slots in one member positioned to move in the direction of the mouths of the slots in the other member when the carrier is being closed, as shown in Figure 3. When in use and closed, as indicated in Figure 2, openings approximately circular in contour are formed, as at IS. The slots M are designed to engage the wrapping cord of a package or a wire or cord bail, and when the two members are folded, the same is securely contained in the two apertures l which are in horizontal alignment, thus holding the package in proper position for carriage.
When the two members It! and II are folded together, the arched portions thereof, being dis- 2 posed one within the other, form a comfortable hand grasp.
The top of the outer member H may be imprinted with an advertisement or a plate may be attached with advertising matter thereon, as indicated at H5 in Figure 4.
As different embodiments may be made of this inventive concept and modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it will be understood that the matter herein is to be interpreted as illustrative merely, and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
1. A parcel carrier comprising an inner and an outer inverted U-shaped member, said members having depending arms pivotally joined at a suitable distance from their lower extremities for swingable movement to and from open and closed positions, said inner member being of smaller size than said outer member .and fitting closely within the same, and said lower extremities of both of said members being formed to provide oppositelydisposed open-mouth slots in juxtaposition to engage a wrapping cord on a parcel when said members are moved to a closed position.
2. A parcel carrier comprising an inner and an outer inverted U-shaped member, said members having depending arms pivotally joined at a suitable distance from their lower extremities for swingable movement to and from open and closed positions, said inner member being of smaller size than said outer member and fitting closely within the same, said lower extremities of both of said members being formed to provide oppositely-disposed open-mouth slots in juxtaposition to engage a wrapping cord on a parcel when said members are moved'to a closed position, and the outer periphery of the bight of the outer member being formed to provide an elongated recess therein, said recess bein adapted to receive advertising matter.
